Packing a Garment Bag

Our garment bag measures right at 45"linear, but I am not certain that it will fit in the overhead compartment. For those of you that travel with dress clothes, do you use a garment bag? Do you carry it on or check it? Does it do a good job of protecting your clothes? I have found hard sided garment bags that I like, but I'd rather not spend $300+ dollars for it if I don't really need it. Thanks!

I've always checked in my garment bag. My bag is soft sided though. It does help with keeping wrinkles away. I just hang the bag up as soon as I arrive at the hotel. My bag also has corner pockets that I can place my shoes in.

I went to V&A on my last trip but didn't take a garment bag. I packed a dress that I could hang in the bathroom to steam the wrinkles out of, a jacket that wouldn't wrinkle, and packed my shoes in the carry on.

They have ironing boards and irons at the mods and deluxe resorts too. Just pack something you can get the wrinkles out of, and save $$$.
