Oyster Murderers

I've been at peace with eating meat ever since I was five and I watched "The Lion King." If Simba and Mufasa were cool with the Circle of Life, then so was I. ;)

And yes, everyone I've heard talking about the oysters so far has said that they are already dead before you "shuck" them so you can tell your MIL that you would like an apology for being an implied "oyster murderer." :lmao:

Everyone can live happily ever after until the bad scene at the tree lot just before Christmas: "What are you going to do with that SAW? Oh the horror!"

That's where the gentle coaxing, "A Christmas tree is just a really big cut flower" comes in. Then mix her a stiff Caesar with good 'ol dead clam juice... :rotfl2:

I'm going to have to agree with your MIL. I don't like killing anything, even spiders! (And no, I don't eat meat :P )

I'm also with MIL here. I don't eat meat or wear leather and would not kill a fly. I can accept something being killed for food (although not for me) but definitely not for fashion.

:thumbsup2 for your MIL

I'm mostly veg (I'm not so much against eating animals but I am strongly against animal cruelty in the food industry) and you'll never catch me on a pearl hunt. DH laughs at me so you can, too, but I even catch flies in the house to release them outside. But after major flooding here, the mosquitoes are a nightmare and eating my babies so I may have to go assassin on them.

Don't worry...I'm way too busy at Disney to protest all you evil oyster killers. :rotfl:

The oysters are already dead and preserved.

I will be honest - I did not want to pick a pearl either because of "killing" the oyster. I do not eat lobster because I do not want to say -- ok -- kill that one for me. My DH catches the bugs in my house because I cannot kill them ... even the spiders which I am terrified of. :scared: I cannot throw a crab into a pot of water or eat those little cherry clams! If I had to kill the cow, we would all be vegetarian ... but I do eat meat and seafood.

Anyway ... my weird psychological make up I guess.

But I oh so happily picked a DEAD OYSTER and had my lovely 7 MM pink pearl set in a lovely ring. :thumbsup2

I must admit I'm not a fan of the pearl thing at Disney. I didn't realise they were already dead though.

I wouldn't wear a pearl the same as I wouldn't wear a real fur coat. Just because an oyster isn't cute and furry doesn't mean it should be trashed for fashion.

We inquired about this and were told that the oysters are already dead and that it is unlawful for them to have oysters to "kill" for their pearls. Now, I did not inquire about how they "got dead" in the first place...........

No oysters were harmed during the harvesting of this pearl. They all died of "natural causes"

I'm a vegetarian and also did not want to pick a pearl because I don't want to cause the death of an oyster. Even though it is already dead....I am skeptical about how they get so many of them, then.

I have quite a few of these pearls-guess that makes me a serial killer. I am most definitely not a vegetarian LOL. I'm a steak eatin', leather wearin', oyster killin' mama and not ashamed of it!!:rotfl:

I wonder how many of us caught those murders on camera :rolleyes1

I think she must be a vegan who doesn't wear leather shoes or belts, use hand cream made with lanoline, wear eyeshadow that has a sparkle to it, have down-filled coats or pillows, use name-brand lipstick, shampoo, conditioner....(you get the idea). ;)

Too cute, though! I never thought of it that way either, though I do think about the 'reality' of what a chicken egg is, sometimes. :scared:

Side note - Chicken eggs purchased in the grocery store are not baby chickens. They are the unfertilized eggs of the chickens. No roosters means no babies.

That said, I am not a fan of killing. I do eat meat, but the further I am removed from the process, the better.
I never thought about where they get the oysters. :confused3

 now my dead oyster picking fun is over!

Well ... I can't save the oysters but I do try to save a few kitties ...

I still like my pearls ... I don't wear fur ... and I am not sure how my diamonds were mined. It is a cold, cruel world out there no matter how thoughtful you try to be. I would give up all the pearls I have ... if people would be nice to each other! ... looks like I will be keeping all my jewels .......

I couldn't do this either, I am super sensitvie. I do eat meat, do not wear leather that I know of. It is just one of those things, I couldn't pick a lobster or crab and boil it live. I will eat the legs and tails though, just can't do some things.

This pretty much sums up the way I feel.

How can the oysters be dead already? They have to be alive to make a pearl. Do they stick an already made pearl in a dead oyster then-that is gross.

My friends are vegan and said they did not like how they were killing oysters. They have leather wallets, purses, shoes, etc.. though. :confused3

Ew, glad I never made it to where they do the pearl thing. I wasn't going to do it because I felt bad killing an oyster just for the pearl, but to learn that they are already dead and you get a pearl from this oyster corpse is even more gross.

From what I've heard, they are already dead.

Maybe they are ones that were harvested to be used as food, but were somehow not the right quality?

The thing that gets me is the little cartons of dead fish you buy at Sea World to feed the dolphins and sting rays. "Hi! Welcome to our park about how cool fish are! Could I interest you in some dead ones to stick between your fingers?"

Maybe we should hold little oyster funerals? Even if they were alive, heck, it's an oyster. It's not like they scream or anything.;)

These are cultured pearls, the oysters are "seeded" to produce them. Uncultured pearls are really expensive. They place a grain of sand into the oyster when it is alive, and the oyster creates the pearl around the grain of sand. The sand is an irritant to the oyster, and it coats it with the substance that eventually creates the pearl. Not all oysters have pearls, the pearl is a way for the oyster to defend itself against the sand that got into it's shell.

I got one of these pearls from a shop at Old Town in Orlando back in the 80s. The oyster was preserved in formaldehyde, since they were already dead. (And would have been quite smelly if they just had unpreserved dead oysters laying around!)
