My DD(22) is expecting her first baby this April and she's wanting to purchase an Owlet Sock Monitor.
What are your thoughts on this product?
She is asking people on Facebook and isn't getting much of a response.
Please be honest - thanks :)

I was in Best Buy about a month ago and saw this. Seemed to me that it would just lead to a lot of paranoia. Why do they want one?

I think she wants it to give her peace of mind.

Had to look that one up.

I am GLAD that products like that did not exist when I was a new parent. I would have bought it because I like tech and been terrified if it ever alarmed.

It seems on par with full body CT scans which create much more false events and worry than true issues uncovered.

Seems way overkill.

I get using a baby monitor (audio only), depending on the home. The cams I think are overkill. Something that keeps track of heart rate and oxygen levels? WAY too much. Just my opinion though.

A new mommy is usually sleep deprived. If it provides peace of mind? It is priceless.

We have one-with a baby in flu/rsv/covid season, my (limited) sleep is better. I know its overkill, but peace of mind is worth it to me. I bought very few brand new items for the babe, and this was one of them. plus, you can use your HSA/FSA money for it, and they resell well.

I’m pregnant now with my 4th and never used one / have no intention of using one. Tell your daughter to follow the safe sleep recommendations- place the baby on its back and no bumpers, pillows, blankets, or toys. Have the baby sleep in the same room where the parents sleep. The risk of SIDS is very low if you follow these guidelines.

Don’t get me wrong, SIDS is absolutely terrifying and even with all 3 of my kids sleeping in the same room as me, I would wake up just to listen to them breathing. But the Owlet hasn’t even been proven to reduce SIDS and if anything, I would be concerned about a false sense of security.

Most doctors/nurses I have talked to do not recommend them due to too many false readings. If the sock comes loose or askew, then it sends out an alert stating the baby is not breathing.

I did get a camera monitor for my son when he switched to his own room. Unfortunately with Covid the company who supported the app went out of business so it is just a camera now.

I would tell her to save her money and just get a regular baby monitor

Our grandson was born in June and my son and daughter-in-law have the Owl sock. The peace of mind is priceless. It hasn’t had any false readings. They can also look back in the morning to see how his sleep cycles went too.

It sounds like a good idea in theory, and I’m all for things that buy peace of mind, but I decided against this because too many people complained about false alarms that panicked them unnecessarily and alerts that woke up the baby. It sounded like the sock was very positional and finicky and more likely to be the cause of sleepless nights. This was 4-5 years ago though, so maybe the technology has improved.

Thank you everyone for your replies - I will have my DD read them tonight.
Happy New Year!

As an OB nurse of almost 20 years I say absolutely no way.
Call me old school but all the new inventions of the past 10ish years do nothing but make for paranoid parents. The need for the “perfect” everything is creating a generation of parents and kids that can’t function without technology. Mother Nature is an amazing creature and mother’s intuition is a real thing. Learn to listen to your body rather than a beeping machine.

I would say no for 2 reasons. 1 - false alarms that wake everyone up. 2 - gives parents a false sense of security that could lead to complacency with safe sleep recommendations.

I’m afraid that horse is long out of the barn but at the risk of sounding like a grumpy old bat, I’m very glad I had my kid back when things were simpler.

@Dan Murphy - thank you so much and Happy New Year to you and your family 🥳🍾🥂
