I realize some people may flame me for this & I am not posting this to start trouble, I am posting this because it has been on my mind. When I was at WDW last month my family & I saw a lot of what we call overweight people using an ECV. I do realize there are some people that really need it because they can not walk, so I understand that part. What I have a problem is seeing these people at a buffet like the Golden Coral stuffing themselves with Fried Chicken, Pizza, bread dipped in oil, Meat Loaf, Ice Cream & etc. So my family & I said no wonder these people we were so overweight, it's because they eat so much which makes them to tired to walk. Here is another example I saw at the Food & Fun Center. We saw a family where the Mother & Grandmother who were both overweight & were in ECV's. Well they were eating Cheeseburgers with French Fries, Nacho's with Cheese, Chips & for desert Mickey Mouse Cup Cakes. Once again I say no wonder they are overweight & can't walk far. I guess I feel this way because when seeing overweight people in ECV's, stuffing themselves with junk food you don't know who has a real disability caused by an injury, because I have seen posts where people say they got dirty looks because they don't look handicaped. Also back in June 2001, my Uncle at 58 years old who ran marathons, always eat healthy & was not overweight dies of a heart attack, so I think it's unfair that these people who are overweight can keep living like this when a healthy person dies.

So if you want to all flame me go ahead, but this is how I feel.

This is just my opinion here but maybe your energy would be better served worrying about stuff that concerns you. I have someone in my family who uses an ECV who is what you and your family may call overweight. Their disabililty may not be overly obvious to you and you know what...that's just fine with us. We don't really worry about wether or not you can tell what the disability is, we worry about wehter or not she will see tomorrow. Has it ever occured to you that some disabilites and the meds to treat them cause unbelievable amounts of weight gain? No, more than likely not and that's okay. That means you are lucky enough not to understand the ravages illness can wreak on the human body. Be grateful for that.

I believe you'll have to take that up with someone a bit higher up than even a DISboard moderator.

This is a joke, right????

Overweight people shouldnt live because your "healthy" uncle died?????

All I can say is . . . . unbelievable!

You may want to visit the disabilities board - it's a great place to learn empathy for others.

I'm going to throw my to cents in on this. Don't worry about others, worry about yourself and be thankful you got out of bed and felt your feet and were alive. You don't always know someone's reason behind using an ECV and it shouldn't be any of your business why they are. It's their life. I'm done and I'm stepping off my soapbox.

The best thing about this board is that I am able to find many great tips on my vacation.

The bad thing about this board - I have to go through threads like this one to get to the good ones. It sure would be nice if we could have an area in this forum to put all of the negative threads, so those of us that are excited about our vacations and want to plan our trips can do so without having to read things like this.

I don't use an ECV. I'm thankful that I am able to get up in the morning and live my life. But, I am overweight, and your statements are really hurtful. I might be fat, but I'm a nice, fat person. Does that mean that maybe I should be allowed to live?

Take it up with God because I don't think the people here at the DIS can do much about it.

As for ECVs being used by overweight people. Some overweight people also have disabilities and some don't. Some have disabilities cause by being overweight others have disbilities totally unrelated to thier weight. I've learned that it's best not to judge others and instead work on your own behaviors.

Seriously?!?

Do you have so little going on in your life that you actually have the time to notice what others are eating in detail, and are still dwelling on it a month later?

I would take all the energy you spend on judging others and focus it on something worthwhile.

"The untimely death of natural foods guru Ewell Gibbons was an early setback for the world vegetable movement, of course,” said Dr. Toast. “Vegetarians had touted Mr. Gibbons’ natural foods lifestyle as the key to longevity and avoidance of cancer, heart disease, and other ailments. His unexpected death (from natural causes), in his early sixties, was a major reverse. The entire vegetarian world-domination strategy had to be reformed.

CR: WDW is place to go with YOUR family. Enjoy the experience with YOUR family. Sight-see with YOUR family. Go on all the rides with YOUR family. Eat in all the restaurants with YOUR family.

That being said: I felt reading your Thread you were there writing a BOOK!!! The detail in your Thread about what people ate at WDW was amazing. I go to WDW to be with my family or my DH but NOT to watch what everyone else in the WORLD is doing and EATING. I think you need to mind your own business and spend some quality time with YOUR family.

Just like Mandy, I am now done and stepping off my soapbox as well!!!

If there is a god, I'm sure he or she appreciates you passing judgement on his or her behalf. One less responsibility, right? In the meantime, the rest of us will continue enjoying our WDW vacations without worrying so much about what other people do if it doesn't affect us directly. My uncle was very much overweight when he died of a heart attack at 45 so not all overweight people can just keep living like that...them's the role of the dice, man. When my family took our aunt (his widow) to WDW two years after he died, she walked all four parks even though she is also overweight and has hip and knee problems. She was so happy to be in WDW (she had never been and had planned on going with my uncle once they retired) that she moved through the pain.

You say in your post that you're not posting this to start trouble but because it's been on your mind. That's all well and good, but what kind of responses were you expecting to receive in return? Since people can eat whatever the would like to eat in this country and there's not much that can be done to fix this "problem" that you have in seeing overweight people "stuffing themselves" (other than a turn of the cheek), it does seem like this thread is here only to start trouble and stir the pot.

Everyone is welcome to their opinion, but they don't all have to be concrete. Opinions are open to progress and evolution.

Your post is very angry. I am very sorry that you had a family member die, but judging other people is not going to bring that person back.
Pooh sized people often have to endure rude remarks, stares, etc.... If using an ECV helps them to enjoy their Disney experience, then so be it. Using an ECV is not all hearts and flowers. My mother had to use one because of her arthritis and it was a nuisance. They are hard to maneuver through the crowds and slowed us down incredibly because of it.
Look in the mirror. When you are absolutely sure that every decision you make in your life is PERFECT, post away.

Sorry if you are offended, but I find your post particularly mean spirited. :sad2:

Jim Fixx was another of those runners who died early. It is just an example that sometimes no matter what people die.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Fixx

"When Fixx took up running at 35, he weighed 214 pounds and smoked two packs a day. Ten years later, when the Complete Book of Running (which spent 11 weeks at No. 1 on the best-seller list) was published, he was 60 pounds lighter and smoke-free. The book's strong, clear prose was an inspiration to millions. In his books and on television talk shows, he extolled how physical exercise had considerably increased the average human being's life expectancy.

Fixx died at the age of 52 of a massive heart attack, during his daily run, on Route 15 in Hardwick, Vermont. The autopsy revealed that cholesterol had blocked one coronary artery 95%, a second 85%, and a third 50%."

I don't go around seeing what people eat on purpose, I just happen to see it where we happen to be sitting. As for what I said about the Golden Coral I just gave a general description about the food they serve. Also I did say I realize people have real disabilities & I am sorry if I upset anyone. If people want to over eat they have that right, I just think if they wanted to try & get healthier & lose some weight those are some foods they should cut out.

OT: I am noticing lately some Threads are started just to ANGER DISer's and tonight right now this is one of them. :stir:

To CR: Is that exactly what you wanted to do is start a Thread and see just how many pages it will reach with people flaming you? :stir:

There are just so many fabulous topics to discuss in this World of ours WHY do people have to be RUDE to get a DISCUSSION going. :furious:

It amazes me that every single Thread I read from any OP that the LAST sentence ends in..."go ahead flame me"...I am seriously beginning to think they just need some attention even if it is FLAMING attention. :stir:

:furious: Ok i am going to play along and feed the troll because if i take this as anything other than a joke i will get really upset. I am a 6' 5" 400lb man that would definately be considered overweight. When I go to WDW or any other theme park or even store for that matter, I use an ECV. NOT because my size makes it difficult to walk(it doesnt i enjoy walking) but because i cant walk after sufferring an injury to my legs received in breaking up an incidence of a man battering his wife. If me being big and using an ECV offends you then please come up to me next time you see me at a buffet, i would be glad to let you have the ECV if i could have your 2 uninjured legs !!!!!! :furious:

For the record this post was not about trying to :stir:, you may not believe that but it's the truth. It's something I had on my mind & wanted to get it off my chest.

Boy where is your Disney magic - not to mention compassion or humanity or any type of understanding at all? You should be ashamed of yourself. Many steroids that people take for back injuries pack on the weight. If you can't stand up for long periods of time, much less walk or exercise, the food you do eat goes straight to fat. Diabetes causes the same problems. Self righteous, judgmental people like yourself need not only a lot of therapy but should try walking in the shoes of people whose pain keeps them on wheels instead of enjoying a brisk walk, a game of tennis, or any other kind of find activity. Were you raised where it was okay to condemn people for the way they look?

I can understand where you are coming from. I work at a Walmart out here and it seems like just about everyone who uses one of those things is "overweight"! Usually overly so! I don't know if it's because they are to tired to walk or if they have a physical problem. I am Pooh sized myself but I'm in fairly good shape as far as walking goes so I have never had the urge to hop on one of those and I hope I never have to! Still, it's we "overweight" people who tend to have more medical problems right? so, there you go! Helen
