override air conditioning?

Hi,

I read somewhere (dot sure where) that it is possible to override A/C to a lower temperature than 68.
Anyone know anything about this? Is there a trick to doing it yourself?

TIA

All the thermostats I've seen at WDW go down to at least 65.

You don't say what resort you are staying so it may be different depending on when they last updated their HVAC systems.

Here is how I bypassed the settings:

Press the Power & Down Temp Control Buttons at the same time
The display will show BP (bypass)
This turns off the sensor setting

Then set the temp to what you want

You may have to do this every 24 hours as they automatically reset to the sensor.

If you can not get the room cool enough, call the maintenance number and tell them the room is still too warm, even at the lowest setting. They will either do a similar "bypass" manuever or they will install a "medical thermostat" face that has a lower set point.

Recently, we actually had poor cooling water flow through our coil, and they sent us to a different resort because ours was full.

Curious, why you would need to go below 68. That should be plenty cool . Probably more to do with the fact that you cant crank it down as low as you want rather than it being uncomfortable.

mchouse,

I like it to be about 64 for sleeping. Any warmer and I have difficulty sleeping. It sounds crazy because most people are cold when I am comfortable. I live in Canada and I turn the heat off at night even in winter and open my windows. I do have 2 warm comforters on my bed, but it goes down to the 20's and I love it. I dislike summer and love winter (except for the short dark days).

MADnOLA,

Thank you!

Temperature is very subjective. Being from upstate NY and traveling to Disney in September, our room couldn't get cold enough for us. We bypassed everyday and kept it around 66. Nothing better, for us, than to come out of that heat into a cold room. Especially for sleeping.

In addition to temperature, relative humidity has an impact on comfort. I agree that an AC setting of 68 in my own house would be downright chily, but in those rooms it still feels sticky at 68/69/70. When you add the fact that up to 4 people may take showers in the room, it can get a little stuffy.

Doesn't the room get warmer than what the thermostat is set at when there is no activity after so long? That's how it used to be at Disney. So even if you have the thermostat set at 65 and leave the room all day (or sleep at night) the temps will creep back up.

Add me to the "override the sensor" club because I like coming "home" at night to a cool room after a long, hot day in the parks.

A couple of reasons for us- my daughter has asthma and cooler temperatures help, also I get hot flashes throughout the day and night.

our room at AKL went to 58 last Saturday. I only noticed it because I had never seen a Disney room go below 65.

I'm from NY even in the winter we set ours to 64 if we are home 54 to sleep and if we are away. I don't like to sleep if it's too warm.

We ALWAYS bring these instructions with us!! You will need it - at least we do.

Only at certain resorts. At some, there is a motion sensor and if there's no activity, the AC won't kick on. I know this is the case at AoA.

I'm here now at AOA and it's been in the mid 80s. I tried the directions but it doesn't seem to be working. Darn. We did call the front desk to complain about it for the 2nd time and she said she would send someone over again. I tried a variety of buttons to do the bypass but it just wasn't working. :confused3

You didn't really call the front desk. You called a call center that is most likely not even in Orlando. Your best bet is to stop by the front desk if someone doesn't come soon.

" At some, there is a motion sensor and if there's no activity, the AC won't kick on. I know this is the case at AoA." When you are sleeping there is no air conditioning coming on at all, doesn't it get terribly hot?

When I think back bout four years ago we did a split stay port orleans riverside and a couple of relaxing days at polynesian. Riverside airconditioning was on all night.

But at the Poly we thought our thermostat was broken because nothing came on when we were sleeping and everytime one of got up to go try the thermostat the air would come on, we thought us touching the thermostat was activating the air conditioning but we eventually realized that it was the motion.

We had to wake up every few hours take turns and wave our arm around to activate the air conditioning, I hated it like that. We definitely did not get a good night sleep there. I have stayed there about four times previous and it was not like that back then.

It is part of their desire to be more green. Unfriendly thermostats and in some resorts they are using warmer chiller water. I bring a big fan now. If you really complain they may send out maintenance but since the thermostats are working as desired they likely will not.

My asthma can act up if I'm not in a chilly room. The directions given for override has helped us expcept once and I can't remember which resort it was. I called housekeeping and they sent someone right away.

To help with the motion activated thermostat sensor, we buy a balloon the first day we are there (except the trips we're at AKL). We put the balloon right in front of the thermostat sensor and under the air vent. The air blows the balloon, the balloon constantly bounces around and activates the sensor so the A/C stays on at night and during the day where we're at the parks.
