I have used overdrive for my kindle many times. I am now trying to get an audio book for my iphone. I tried to download the app and a book and it is has been loading the title for an hour. How long does it take? I think it is not working.
I tried to use overdrive to download to windows on my computer and it keeps saying that it has encountered illegal instruction when I hit download open. I am at the end of my rope! Any help?

Audiobooks *are* large files and take a long time to load, but that's excessive.
(Normally a 400 page book can take up to about 30 minutes to transfer.)

Did you pick up the Overdrive Media Console from your library's website? If so, maybe that is a bandwidth problem; try getting it directly from the Overdrive site.

I'm not sure about download open; I've never encountered that before; normally to move the file from a computer to a portable audio device the command that you use is "Transfer".

I don't use an Apple audio device. However, I have heard that with Apple devices there can be a software operations conflict with iTunes, and that you should set iTunes to "manually manage music" while you are trying to move files via Overdrive.

I have both Apps on my Iphone, and I have a Kindle that synched to my App. If a book is not available for Kindle I get the book for overdrive, I didn't know that you could get an overdrive book to your kindle, how do you do that?

Amazon settled their differences with Overdrive in 2011, and now there is a Kindle format available for Overdrive ebooks. Just click on the Kindle version of the file when you are on your library's Overdrive website. (The easiest way to search is to use the Advanced Search option to specify that you want to only find books that are available in Kindle format.) Kindle format is capable of wireless download to your device, but there are some publishers who have restricted it; in those cases you must sideload the title to your Kindle via a computer with a cable. (There will be a note next to the title on the Overdrive website noting that you are required to use USB transfer for that title.)

However, none of this is germaine to the OP's question, because she was asking about downloading Overdrive AUDIObooks to an iPhone. The software for the audiobooks is Overdrive Media Console. While that software now *can* handle some ebooks, it is not Overdrive's preferred software for ebooks; which would be Adobe Digital Editions.

Thanks for your response. It finally loaded on my phone. It took over an hour. I did download the console from the overdrive site. When I hit download, the pop up comes up to open or save. It doesn't matter which I click. A gray box comes up saying that it is an illegal connection and will not do anything. I asked at my library today and they weren't able to help me either. I think it is something from my computer blocking the download??? Have no idea, but it is causing me headaches!
At least I can get books from kindle on overdrive still and now I can get on my iphone, although one title would not dowload on my iphone either. Guess I'll quit trying to get on computer for now. Too much stress!
