hi everyone! has anyone thought of a solution for the over-the-door shoe hanger? now i don't mean just do it anyway! o_O i mean like used another type of storage solution that's similar...like has anyone used magnetic hooks to hang the shoe organizer or something? does it work? please share your extra storage hacks...thanks!

Albeit we were only on a three-night cruise, our family of four only used two drawers. Most everything was hanging in the two closets.

Put ties or loops on the top and hang it from the hooks in the room. Or from a hanger in the closet.

I was wondering the same thing. We've loved having the over the door organizer on our previous cruises. I bought a couple of sturdy magnetic hooks on Amazon that are supposed to hold up to 25 lbs so I was hopeful that would work. But then when I read DCLs info about the organizers, I'm confused whether they are banned in general on the door or just if hanged over the door.

Only from hanging over the door. They were damaging the doors/frames. You can still bring hanging organizers, you just can't hang them over the door.

How long is your cruise?

I took a plastic hanger and used Nit Ize 3" gear ties to tie two of the over-the-door-holder grommets to the long per-pendicular-to-floor side of the hanger.

The first time we did this we hung it on one of the hooks already in the room.

The second time, we just hung the thing inside the closet. Worked great there and that is what we will do in the future.

This is what I created -- two hanging mesh organizers. This is when we hung them on the hooks in the room. I found with our most recent cruise that they worked even better hanging in the closet.

The short length works for us as it means I have two -- one for each of us.

A thought about over the door hangers... and trying to sleep....
  • does the hanger allow the door to close? If the door is not closed, the door may be swinging back and forth on the boat. Not fun trying to sleep with hinges creaking.
  • Is the hanger too thick to allow the door to close? Will the door be warped and damage when the door is forced?
  • Will the rocking of the boat cause your items to bang against the door?
  • which door? Closet door was a slider in my Wonder cabin. Won't allow for an overdoor hanger.
Door handle hanger may be a preferred choice, but might still be banging on a moving boat.

How do you hang it? The shower curtains don't ride on a typical rod on the ships. They are on a track in the ceiling.

They fit on the open hook part. They have holes w/ grommets at the top (I think 3 holes). These slip right onto the hooks.

I just re-looked at the picture. They don't come w/ the shower hooks. The picture is a little misleading. Imagine it w/out the shower hooks. Just slip the holes onto the available hooks.

So you're putting something on the same hooks that the shower curtain is hanging on?

You seriously don't have enough room for your stuff for just a 7 day cruise? Perhaps, you need to take less stuff with you on the cruise. We have been on 5 cruises, and have always had enough room for our clothes, shoes, and other items.

very true about the rocking & banging noise...we used an over the door organizer a few times on past cruises & never had an issue but u never know! we sleep with a fan to drown out noises (which is a whole other issue!) so that may be why we never noticed it
