Also China needs to keep its boarders, factories, and economy open. So it serves them no purpose to frighten the public further within their boarders.

This is what concerns me... they are not keeping things open.. We had an analyst call today at work.. Give it about 2 weeks where the global supply chain for parts runs out. Things are closed.. All meetings/ events.. I am talking conventions etc.. Cancelled now through end of March. Airbus has extended their production shut-down.

There are a few financial analysts whom I follow, and one of them is Mohamed El-Erian. In an interview, he said, "Don't buy the dip"- that this may not to work out like people might think. When he was pressed to elaborate, he wouldn't, I assume because he didn't feel qualified to expound on medical matters and is a cautious guy. He just reiterated, don't do it. He then went on to write a rather lengthy & esoteric column for Financial Times, but that one interview was enough for me. He's worried.

my husband works with factories located throughout china.
The factories were supposed to open yesterday, which was already a delayed post new years opening.
But they didn't open.
Then the government said the 12th of february, but today he was notified of another delay, this time with no date given for reopening.
And this isn't just the factories. The banks, the offices, the factories, everything.

If they don't open soon, this will be felt worldwide.
Most factories that are supplied by china, plan for the annual chinese new years shutdown, but not for this extended period.
There have already been some factory closings outside of China due to the lack of raw material and parts.

Suffice to say, while people dying is without question must worse, the economic impact of this epidemic is going to be very serious as well.

one article I read said US citizens have heard from the embassy that they would be removed from the ship when the quarantine was lifted. It may be now that it's been imposed, it can't be lifted until it's lifted for everyone.

I read the husband's Redditt page too which he's keeping updated. They are really upbeat and don't seem angry. They say the cruise line/crew are doing a great job and the food is pretty good.

That must be tough for the crew, who are more at risk of exposure than most. What a crap situation but it's great of them to keep a positive outlook. I read somewhere else an Aussie couple had wine delivered by drone. That would be me!

Just curious why this specific ship is having problems. Did it come from China or something? None of the articles really explain, other than there are no suspected cases of coronavirus on the ship.

Coronavirus: Thailand reportedly turns away Holland America, leaving cruise in limbo
by Morgan Hines and Julia Thompson

Thailand has reportedly turned away Holland America's MS Westerdam which had been previously scheduled for disembarkation in Laem Chabang on Thursday, according to the cruise line.

On Tuesday morning, Thailand's public health minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, announced on Facebook that he had prohibited the ship's entry.

"I have issued orders. Permission to disembark refused," he wrote. Thailand currently has 32 confirmed cases of the virus.

"We are aware of the reports regarding the status of Westerdam’s call to Laem Chabang (Bangkok), Thailand," the cruise line said in a statement provided to USA TODAY by Holland America's director of relations, Erik Elvejord. "We are actively working this matter and will provide an update when we are able. We know this is confusing for our guests and their families and we greatly appreciate their patience."

Passengers who had already begun booking return flights from Bangkok based on the announcement that they'd be getting off the ship in Thailand now find themselves back in limbo.

The ship had already changed its disembarkation point from Shanghai to Yokohama before Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe denied the MS Westerdam entry last week. It was subsequently turned away from Guam, a U.S. territory. The Philippines also barred the ship from making a scheduled port call earlier in the sailing.

There are no known cases of coronavirus among the 1,455 passengers and 802 crew on board despite reports to the contrary, the cruise line said, and the MS Westerdam has not been in quarantine.

"We have no reason to believe there are cases of coronavirus on board," Erik Elvejord, Holland America's public relations director, said in an email Friday morning.

The next scheduled cruise on Feb. 15 has been canceled. The cruise line is assessing the impact of port restrictions in Asia on cruises departing Feb. 29 or later. The current passengers have been promised a full refund and a credit toward a future cruise.

I'm going to merge this thread with the other corona virus thread - would you mind changing the title of that one to something more generic? I don't want to stifle conversation at all, but this is also a Disney cruise forum, so having a bunch of threads going on other topics associated with other lines doesn't quite fit either.

a passenger boarded the ship already sick with coronavirus...he was only on board for about 5 days, but that was enough to spread the disease..

Sorry, my reply was originally in a separate thread regarding a different ship, but got merged with this one.

There is the Holland America ship that has been refused port at 5 different countries. There are no cases of coronavirus on the ship. I'm curious as to why these countries are turning this ship away, in part because we're going on a cruise in a couple months as well. I'm wondering why they would turn away a ship with no known infected passengers, and if we could be in the same position as well. I was thinking maybe the ship came from China, or some other high risk feature about that specific cruise, or something else.

because the westerdam had a port stop in hong kong.
Hong Kong was the last port the westerdam was in.
Hong Kong has cases of corona virus.
So several countries have refused entry to the westerdam.

it's a nightmare for the people on board that ship.
And no one is even sick on board!!
.
"Nightmare" I would disagree. I just got off 7-day Caribbean cruise and never got off the ship. We did a transatlantic cruise in September and missed our ports in Canada due to Humberto and spent 7 days at sea in bad weather. Yes, it's disappointing to miss ports, but its a risk you take when you book a cruise. It's certainly not a nightmare. These people aren't locked in their rooms they have all the activities and amenities on the ship. My teenagers' dream cruise would be a two cruise to nowhere.

I would be extremely disappointed if I traveled all the way to Asia and this happened, but I wouldn't be suffering like the people on the quarantined ship are. Hopefully, the cruise line will give them a discount on a future cruise.

Usually they reset the quarantine every time there is another positive case. I did read that they reset it yesterday. So you can see where that leads- the quarantine is extended and more people become infected. Then they extend the quarantine. Rinse, repeat.

This is in conflict with the February 19th end-date that is in the information that @Starwind posted. It'll be interesting to see what happens on that date.

I believe they are only extending quarantine for cabin mates of those who tested positive. A new 14 days from last contact.
