Over 3,500 people quarantined on Diamond Princess cruise

Meanwhile Singapore has had the biggest daily jump in cases with 8 in a day brining them to 58, more than Hong Kong. But still no travel warning for that destination 😔
And the new London case decided to take an uber and present her self to the emergency department...

I read another article that mentioned that China is now classifying anyone with a chest infection as having the virus, however, that might end up including people who have flu or pneumonia, but not coronavirus. The change was because a chest xray is an immediate diagnosis, whereas the virus test takes longer and is in short supply. This would make the numbers change, too.

very interesting letter from the CDC...
so they're going to slowly start taking passengers off the ship and moving them to a land based quarantine facility...
the description of the quarantine facility doesn't sound like much of an improvement..
.
But at least they're off the ship. That to me is a huge selling point, although I'd be just as happy eating a box lunch as dining on gourmet ship's fare- otherwise I might be swayed by the cuisine!

Coronavirus infections spike to 15,000 new Chinese cases in a day

I know you didn't choose the headline, but don't think they spiked, I think they caught up because of what @FigmentSpark just posted. Experts across the world have questioned the numbers they'd been putting out- these are more realistic.

Just listened to a really interesting JAMA podcast with an esteemed, US-trained Chinese epidemiologist. He absolutely thinks the travel ban (the one isolating Hubei Province) was critical and thinks we (the rest of the world) needs to keep isolating, diagnosing and treating as aggressively as possible. They have managed to keep it from spreading in the rest of China by containing small clusters that pop up. I thought that was very encouraging, because that's the current strategy in the US.

But he was surprised by how contagious it is. More like flu, less like SARS.

Ugh... Now the 24-hour news cycle click-baiting has begun. I have been relatively happy with the news coverage up until now, but all it took was China re-classifying things to go full-on fear mongering. For instance, cnn now has a story: "Coronavirus death toll spikes dramatically." And if you start reading the article, after talking about how alarming the new numbers are, they then point out that these are cases that have been around for weeks, and have recently been re-classified, and then in an interview with WHO experts, who state "This is totally normal- during a pandemic, things are often re-classified and we get these artificial spikes.. nothing to be overly alarmed about." 🤦‍♂️ (and its not just cnn.. I've seen several sensationalized titles this morning from various media outlets)

Food in Japan tends to be really great, IMO. Id rather eat their boxed lunches over cruise fare any day.

As you say, its for clicks, more eyeballs, more time watching, more ads, more $. News networks are so irresponsible
Fox had a similar alert on TV this AM and a velvet red box that read "corona virus emergency" and then a chyron with a 1-800 number for the CDC (seriously??...the CDC??)... that's so reckless it may drive ppl into serious panic mode and that's so much more dangerous..

It's already having negative effects.
Went to Costco earlier in the day to grab a case of mini perrier bottles (only place they sell them, only thing I buy regularly there) and the place was a mad house, never seen it that full, not even at Xmas time... at least 1/3 of the ppl were buying doomsday-prep like supplies: cases upon cases of water, canned goods, batteries... I saw a couple of ppl wearing masks (I'm in Canada).... I was like whaaat...is going on.

Spring cannot come soon enough.. I'm almost 100% certain this will die down once temps increase...like it happens with the flu.

It is doomsday prep.... tomorrow is a PA day and then Monday is a holiday! At least in Ontario. For a lot of parents, it's get the errands done today or else.

Oh yeah, and province-wide teacher's strike next Friday.

Well, after seeing this everything unfold over the last 10 days, I don't know if I'll ever again, at the end of a cruise say: "I wish we never had to get off the ship!" :D

I work in a grocery store in a Seattle suburb. A few days ago we were accidentally sent a full case of masks. We don't carry them, but put them out on a display to see if they'd sell without marking them down. A few hours later one couple bought all 144 boxes of them. I think people are definitely starting to get nervous.

I'm taking that news with a grain of salt. If you listen to what he actually said, there is not a ton of certainty. There are claims of "asymptomatic" transmission, then a caveat that "we don't know how much this is contributing to the spread," and then in the next breath calling "asymptomatic" someone with a mild cough and sore throat. Mild symptoms are still symptoms. What most picture as asymptomatic, are people who have no symptoms at all, and just by being around another person, can transmit the virus. This sounds much more like "Those with milder symptoms, can still transmit the virus."

If just having the virus, and breathing can transmit it.. that will really worry me.

All the masks are sold out everywhere in my town and the neighboring ones, not just at drug stores but at stores like Home Depot, believe it or not. I don’t trust the ones still available on Amazon...especially when the seller appears to be from Asia...

If you're in an agricultural area, farm and ranch stores have them. I got the last box from our local ranch store last night.

I think all cruises need to suspend their Asian itineraries. The last thing any country wants is a floating germ bucket going from hotspot to hotspot letting loose a few thousand people in their population.

One thing I said on my cruise group (leaving a week from tomorrow) is that one major thing Disney has going for it is the small fleet and right now the whole fleet is going out of southeastern USA. These lines with large fleets going out of all kinds of international ports have a lot more complexity on their hands as far as screenings go with different countries having different responses to the issue.

Meanwhile here in the US there are 15 confirmed cases. 1000 times more people DIE from strep every year than coronavirus cases we have confirmed here in the US. i'm not going to worry about cruising out of Port Canaveral, Miami or New Orleans.

I think that's perfectly reasonable right now. The problem is, the situation can change very rapidly. I think the CDC is not really getting this message out very well. Things are fine currently, but in a month we could have several large outbreaks within the US. That doesn't mean they are wrong in what they say now. We might contain this virus, or it might grow exponentially.

I don't think there is an answer to that yet, but it seems the experts grow more worried by the day. That's just my observation in following this pretty closely since the third week in January. They're saying different things now, and their tone has changed. Just my impression, very unscientific.
