Outgrown AG stuff?

My DD13 has outgrown her American Girl stuff for the most part. She will still occasionally take them out a few times a year and play with them, but those times are becoming few and far between.

I would like to save some stuff for her as she gets older, but I don't want to keep everything she has...it is way too much to hang onto *all* of it.

If you have an older DD that was invested in AG, what did you do with all the dolls and accessories once she outgrew them? Did you sell it all? Keep it all? Keep some and sell the rest?

Right now, space isn't an issue, so that isn't a factor.

Not there yet, but . . .

I paid good money for an Elizabeth doll from a Craigslist seller. :faint:

I have also heard of a teenager selling her AG collection and adding quite a bit to her college fund.

I plan to eventually save my daughter's collection for grandchildren, but if you don't want to save everything you can make decent money on selling the items - especially any retired items. Just look at some of the process on eBay!

Another option though - I bet some little girl wanting a doll for Christmas (say on an Angel Tree) would love to receive a nicely packaged gift of an AG doll and accessories even if it wasn't new. :santa:

We didn't have a whole lot of clothes and accessories. We've kept it all.

I have two nieces that are still of playing age. If I were to get rid of things, it's likely that I would have gifted to them.

I see it as the same as my Barbies growing up. My mother kept all the clothes that she and my grandma had made for them and my best doll and gave them to me when I got my own home.

I have a niece and 3 great-nieces who are all the same age (turning 7 shortly). My niece has a lot of AG stuff already that has been passed down to her from a family friend.

I would keep it all until she is the one to let it go. When she finishes school and moves out she takes it with her. It is her stuff so she gets to decide.

My oldest DD (28yo) was into AG. DD(24) had one Magic In The Attic doll. We saved everything including the wardrobe that DH made. I'm really glad that we did. They got rid of most of their toys(their decision) and are regretting it now.

We kept the Little Tykes kitchen, washer and dryer but got rid of the play food.

Both of them are special ed teachers and wish that they had some of their old toys for their classroom. The free play stuff out there now just isn't the same.

If you have room to store them, I would. These are classic toys the I don't think will ever go out of style.

My sister had passed down her Revlon dolls clothes to me, and I also saved the ones that my mother and grandmother had made. They knit tiny cardigan sweaters on toothpicks! A few years ago, or 40 years later, I gave them back to my sister, who was shocked I had saved them all this time. She will be passing them to her granddaughter, which my mother is thrilled to hear.

As for the AG doll, I would store it away and wait to pass it on.

She has 7 dolls, not one. If she had one, it would be a no-brainer to hang onto it.

What does your DD think?

I'd be hoping she wants to thin the herd a bit. ;)

My daughter has 3, along with a small number of special outfits. I'm good with keeping that much.

That said, if you decide to part with some stuff, the season is almost upon us!

I would keep them.

Here is something to scare you...

In ten yrs, she may be married with kids and a daughter of her own. :lmao: Keep it, store it and give it to her when she "moves out".

My dd's are 18 and 23. One is moved out. I am hoping to pawn off Christmas ornaments on the 23yo this yr. :rolleyes1

It goes by so fast. :faint:

She's 13, and they're her toys. If she wants to sell some on Craig's list, or donate them to a charity, or box them all up if you have room, I'd say that's up to her. My daughter was hugely into My Little Pony, she had a ton of sets from birthdays and holidays, she decided to sell them as a lot on Craig's list, the money was hers to keep.

I would hold onto it for awhile longer. Maybe after a bit if time she can choose her most favorite dolls, clothing and items to save. I belong to an American Girl forum and there are many girls in their twenties who are collecting all over again because they had gotten rid of things when they were younger. There are also many who are grateful that they saved everything and are refining or building their collections. Collecting and playing with AG dolls is not just for young girls, there is are many teens and adult women and men who enjoy the dolls like any other collectible item.

I only had one doll so I have kept her. Now if anyone is interested in getting rid of the 1800 Kristen doll PM me. :goodvibes

I agree with those who say keep it. One day she may have a dd and this would be wonderful to pass on. If there are a couple dolls that she wasn't very partial to you could ebay them for her. However, to her money will seem better then dolls now but in a few years she might wish she had the dolls instead of a couple hundred bucks. My dd 29 has the original Samantha doll with a few accessories. She wanted to get rid of them a few years back. If she has a girl I am sending the doll in to get refurbished.

AGPT, right? I'm on there too.

I agreed you should keep it all or at least as much as possible. My parents saved all my childhood toys. At the time I thought it was crazy. Now I'm thankful that they did that. I'm incrediably grateful that I still have them. I've heard way too many horror stories from other adult toy collectors about how their parents got rid of their toys without their permission.

My DD kept her favorite doll and her favorite clothes.

Everything else she gave to me to sell on Ebay. I added the money to her college fund after it all sold. In our case it was only around 400.00 since she only had 2 dolls to sell and their clothes but every bit helps.

My mom still has both of my dolls and the clothes. We're keeping them in case I want them for a possible female child; if I don't have one, we'll donate or sell (if they're worth anything).
