Dates: 9/10-9/17
Hotel: Disneyland Hotel (our first time!)
Places: Disneyland, California Adventure, and Legoland
Cast: Sarah (that's me!), Brian, and the little ones...K (age 7.5) and Q (age 5.5)

I've been planning this trip for just about a year and finally told the children about it halfway through the summer. I brought home a big cardboard box with two gigantic balloons inside (weighted down with Mickey Pez dispensers) and had them open the box.

Yes, they were surprised! And those dratted balloons lived in our playroom for ages!!

We took the children out of school for four days (they already had one day off as a "Teacher Excellence Day") for a trip to Disneyland to celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary. This is our third family trip to Disneyland (my fourth trip as I went once as a young child) and we've always gone in September. Unfortunately September no longer is quite as deserted as it was the first year we visited.

At any rate, we flew Virgin America to LAX and took the Disneyland Express to Anaheim. We've had pretty good experiences on Virgin America and have managed to find good prices on the flights. I wish we didn't have to fly to LAX, but the flight prices are the reason why...LAX really is dreadful though.

Although they knew we were going to Disneyland, they did not know where we were staying--I kept that a surprise and the bus driver helped me out and didn't even say the name of the hotel on the bus ride. He was such a good sport! When the bus pulled up to the Disneyland Hotel, I asked my daughter if she'd like to stay here, at Mickey's hotel, and her eyes got really big and she gave me a very enthusiastic "YES!"

I left my family out in the hall while I took these pictures of our room on the 8th floor of the Adventure Tower...so they're not exactly the best shots.

Two queen beds plus a couch/daybed (tucked just past the tv cabinet)

The bed headboard with the fireworks was amazing. It brought tears to everyone's eyes (except my five year old son) the first time we turned it on and we left it on all night every night we were there. Oh and notice the adjustable reading lamps on the sides of the bed? I thought those were a great touch.

The bathroom was quite nice with subtle Mickey touches throughout. That is the closet on the right--with a pack-n-play and an ironing board stashed inside.

The toiletries have Mickey heads on the bottles (love those!) and the larger colored tiles in the shower have VERY subtle Mickey heads on them--they're very hard to see. My daughter saw them first. The toilet has its own door (reflected in the mirror).

We arrived at the hotel at dinnertime, so we checked in (and picked up our Happy Anniversary buttons), dropped our things in the room, and then went to Tangaroa Terrace (near the pool) for a quick dinner. I grabbed this shot of the top of the waterslides from the dining area.

I wasn't too impressed with the offerings--but then, I like pretty traditional food and don't like to try new things. I'm one of those people who always orders the exact same thing off the menu at certain restaurants--I know what I like and I stick with it...so take my opinion with a grain of salt. It was nice to sit outside and eat though.

In fact, our children were enjoying dining outside so much that we had to keep reminding them to hurry up with their meal...we wanted to go to Disneyland!

The walk to Disneyland seemed to take FOREVER! I guess we were used to the super quick walk across the crosswalk from the Desert Inn and Suites. Winding through all the people in Downtown Disney was not a pleasant experience at all and, during the week, definitely was our least favorite part of staying at the Disneyland Hotel.

Finally we made it to security and we were into the esplanade! I don't know why DL has this big "thing" parked in the middle there, but I took a picture--of course!

We made it into Disneyland around 6:45 and went off to ride Dumbo first!

Next up was Casey Jr--thankfully I did not have to ride in the horrible monkey cage. I'm working on convincing my children that the caboose really is the best car of all! Unfortunately only three of us can sit across the back...so my husband usually gets left to sit facing forward...but that still is better than sitting in the monkey cage!

Then it was off to Small World before riding the Carousel. My children were disappointed that a little, um...child (I'm being nice) cut them off in their pursuit of getting on Jingles (since I don't let them run in Disneyland--apparently others don't follow this rule), but after a quick reminder that they should be happy to BE in Disneyland, they perked back up! :) This was their first time riding the Carousel in the dark!

It was so pretty to see Disneyland at night--all lit up and glowing!

Our last ride of the evening was on the Teacups before going and finding a spot for the 9:30 fireworks. All this time we hadn't said a word to the children about the fireworks, so they had no idea! We ended up with a great spot--not a totally clear view of the front of the Castle, but it was pretty clear and we only had to wait about twenty minutes. We had a roped off walkway right in front of us, so that made it easier for our children to see.

It was AMAZING to see Tinkerbell AND Dumbo fly. LOVED that. Of course both my children noticed the guidewires though. I knew that would happen. Luckily I had my "they were blinded by the fireworks and the wires were there to guide them" story all ready to go though.

After the fireworks we were part of the mob scene exiting the park and heading back to the hotel. NOT FUN.

loving the photos, and anxiously waiting for your next update!

where did you get the kids' shirts? did you make them? they are awesome looking!
