Our view of the AKL (long)

We were recently at the AKL for my son's birthday and we had a mixed reaction for the AKL. We had high expectations from the reviews that we read. As we drove up and began to see the Lodge, we were impressed. Our next impressions (of the staff) were not so great.

As we drove up to the entrance we saw two cast members talking. We saw a car pulled to the left, so I parked behind it. As I exited my car, a cast member named Alan came over and said "Didn't you see me flagging you to park over there?" I told him I didn't and asked where to park. He said "over there."

I saw another car parked next to the curb, so I backed up and pulled up next to the curb (as the other car was parked).

He then came over again and said, "Buddy, am I not getting through to you. You can't park there. No one can park next to the curb."

I found this to be strange since another car WAS parked next to the curb.

I then asked again, where to park. He said "You see that guy standing there (pointing to a cast member). Park right where he is. Run him over."

I did not run him over (he moved out of the way), but I did park where he was standing.

Alan then came over again and rolled his eyes at me. I said "is this still not right?" He said "No, but probably the best YOU can do."

I then told him that we had already sent our bags over and we were just checking in. He then said, "well, you will need to put your car in the parking lot" and pointed to the parking lot.

I was going to use the valet service, but decided not to after being treated so rudely.

We then parked (in the rain) and walked in to check in. I reported the incident to the clerk at the front desk. He said he normally worked for another resort and couldn't wait to get back.

This person then gave me grief over how I spelled my name. My birth name is Christopher and I go by Cris. I know it is not always spelled that way but it is how many people spell their name. (There are two hosts on Inside the NFL on HBO who spell their names Cris). My reservation was in Christopher and my credit card read Cris. The clerk told me that I needed to have an H in Cris for him to check me in. (I feel sorry for all of the Thomas's who go by Tom). After showing my driver's license he agreed to let us check in.

The Lodge itself is beautiful. There are lots of activities and great places to eat. It is neat to see the animals outside, but not enough (for us) for the $100 extra a night for the room. (We moved over from the All-Star Sports which we all loved). We were trying to do something special for our son's birthday. Turns out he would have rather stayed at the All Stars.

We moved from our first savanna (the sunset savanna) because we hated the view. The holding pens and the huge black tarp that went across the back made it very unappealing. When we asked to move, we were told that we could not until the next day.

When we called down the next day the lady at the front desk said, "You STILL want to move?" Obviously they were hoping that we would unpack and then not want to move. The room they moved us to was fine, but still a lot of grief from the staff that I don't expect at Disney.

We had paid for the savanna view and met several people who were on the same floor as us (after the move) who said they did not book a savanna but were given one anyway.

We did our one and only stint at the AKL. This was definitely a learning experience for us.

First off, I would NOT have taken the condescending way that CM was speaking to you lightly!

In no way did he need to speak to you in that tone. How rude! I think he is in need of some customer service training!

Sorry your stay left you with a sour taste in your mouth, I'd probably never to back to AKL either if that was my experience.

It does not matter how wonderful a hotel is if the staff is unpleasent. I had a similar experiance at the BW hotel. Because of that experiance, we will never stay there again. It ruined the entire vacation.

I travel a lot for a living and when I receive poor service or "attitude" I get their name and report them to their manager or direct supervisor. Usually you can change someone's attitude real quick when you pull out your pen and paper and ask them what their full name is.

Ugh. When poor service (not even poor in this case-- HOSTILE SERVICE!) is the first thing you encounter when arriving at your resort, it is going to take a lot to turn the experience around. Sorry about your bad experience.

Wow, what a nasty experience. :( We had exactly the OPPOSITE experience at AKL with the staff, they could not have been NICER. The valet who greeted us was almost TOO cheerful! :) We also were not thrilled with our savannah view (I got none of my requests) and I inquired about the cost to upgrade to concierge. In the course of the conversation the front desk person ascertained that we were not happy with the view and instantly found us another room, that was EXCELLENT. She was absolutely as sweet and professional as could be.

I say this only to illustrate that it's possible to have two entirely different experiences with staff at the same resort. I certainly don't blame you for not wanting to go back after what happened. I probably won't go back to the AKL either, even though it had some of the BEST customer service we've encountered. The location was just too isolated for us.

I hope your next trip is magical! :)

Wow. 'Alan' needs an attitude adjustment. I would have been more than happy to 'set him straight' (along with his boss).

We stayed one night at AKL to check it out this past August. The resort is beautiful, and the bellmen were at least friendly, but the checkin person (Rosa) was the most unfriendly CM I've ever met. I truly believe a smile would break this woman's face. She wasn't 'rude', but was so close to it that it left you feeling like a great big bother, to her otherwise peaceful day.

Now, WL and BC were a totally different Story. CMs there were friendly and full of that Disney Magic. And Portofino Bay at Universal, ALL the counter personnel were super friendly, explained EVERYTHING, found us a great room and were nice to the kids. We'd stay there again in a minute!

Its amazing how MUCH that first impression affects customer perception of a Resort. We now have absolutely NO intention of returning to AKL. It holds NO Disney magic for us.

You'd think with all the 'animal cleanup' that has to be done at AKL, they could employ these less friendly CM's away from the guests! Of course, if they treat customers badly, I'm sure they can't be trusted with those poor innocent animals.

"Buddy, am I not getting through to you? You can't ....GO there!" :jester:

ON our trip in November we used the valet services in AKL and we were sorry!!

The driver got in a ccident with our rental car. We are still fighting with the rental company now. The staff at Akl was not helpful at all with this problem that they caused!!!!! We will never have valet parking again:(

So sorry to hear of such a bad experience. I hope you contact them again, it shouldn't be too hard for them to figure out who the CM was. At checkin this past May at the AKL we were greeted by the rudest CM I have ever encountered at WDW. I won't go into the details but I am a very patient person & I'm still sorry I didn't confront her about it. Pls don't be discouraged about your stay at AKL because of these few CM's. We stayed there last year, concierge & they were wonderful. We're still getting Birthday calls from them. I feel we really should do more to point out the extreme rudeness, it's not fair to the CM's that try their best at AKL. Yes, we are all entitled to a bad day, but once a guest reacts to bad service, it's time to change your attitude. I did go back later to set up our express checkout & a different CM was very nice. I would describe the rude CM to you but wouldn't want anyone to worry if they all look alike, lol. Next time I intend to say thanks but I'll have someone else help me & leave. Hopefully, that won't happen.

I too just got back and had the most wonderful staff at checkin and our bellman Watt was wonderful! Friendly and helpful even made some excellent room suggestions before we checked in.

The gentleman at Check in even made PS that night for Boma's for us, with a smile and lots of pixie dust!

I loved this resort from start to finish (allthough I was a little upset that I didn't see any animals during the day untill our last day).

From the restaurants to the free programs to the CM's it really was an exceptional experience for me. I am so sorry that your trip was less than magical!

I think you must have had the staff I had at the Grand Floridian! The valet parking attendants were the worst, but the front desk was pretty bad also. They were horrible. I don't even want to give them another chance. Now I have always had great luck at AKL so I guess it just depends.

I'm with Katherine, sorry to hear about your bad experience at AKL.

We were there in January, before any of the moving, etc., and had a great time. The resort was beautiful, the CMs were fine, no problem with the rooms (all our requests were met), really couldn't have been much happier - except if they'd waived the bill!

Our plans in about 6 wks are to stay mostly at BC- the few times we've stayed on-property, we haven't done any "reruns". But... we sure considered it for AKL!!

And now a word to the audience: Just like with all the personal experiences posted on these boards, they're personal, and as they say, "your mileage may vary." Don't necessarily assume the worst because of a couple of bad apples (CMs, not guests!). (Everybody remember the GF/concierge saga about a month or so ago?) GO - have a great time, MAKE IT a great time.

Sorry you had a bad experience. We just returned on Monday and our stay was fabulous. All the CM's were friendly and courteous. The lodge itself was great and we were given all of our requests. Our savannah view room was close to everything, the lobby, restaurants and the pool. We saw lots of animals at all different times of day. I understand your feeling of not wanting
to return after such hostile treatment. We feel that way about the Carribean Beach, that holiday was a disaster from start to finish, we will never go there again. I guess it is just your luck.
Hope your next holiday goes well.
