Our trip to the Big Flea Market didn't go quite as planned ...

The Big Flea Market is down at the Richmond raceway this weekend. DW Lauri (a.k.a. MeanLaureen) has been wanting to go in hopes of finding a Trading Spaces-like deal (how many of those designers regularly say "I found this at a flea market/thrift store for cheap"?), and I went along because it's sometimes interesting to just look at what the vendors have. For example, there was one guy there that had a bunch of old telephones (and I mean straight from Green Acres and older).

Lauri didn't have much luck. Everything she saw and liked had a pretty high price tag. Even negotiating wouldn't have brought it down to what Vern or Doug say they pay for stuff like that.

Me, on the other hand ... :smooth: I'm browsing and find some old Star Wars: Return of the Jedi glasses that were sold at Burger King back in 1983. I left them and decided I'd check before we left and maybe buy one. A little while later I'm coming out of another vendor's display and something on the back of a shelf catches my eye. A glass sold by Coca Cola for the movie "Mickey's Christmas Carol" featuring Uncle Scrooge as ol' Ebenezer. It was only $6 and in great shape. I don't know what the value is on it, but I only thought about it for maybe 2 seconds and bought it.

I found a few other vendors with glasses of other characters, from Bugs Bunny to Superman to Spider-Man to Mickey Mouse. One had a bunch in a Happy Birthday Mickey collector series by Pepsi. It looked like she had close to an entire set, but she was asking $23 for one with Scrooge and the nephews, and would only come down to $21 (she said that was close to her cost). For that I figured I could get all three of the Star Wars glasses I saw (which I did go back and buy for $15 before we left), so I passed. When I caught up with Lauri, she was buying something for me -- a glass from the series I had found, this one with Donald and the nephews, but paid $5 for it.

If I get a chance, I'll post some pictures of them later.

Ok, am I the only one who doesn't get this? I have spent like $25 on trips to the vet and to Wal-Mart to buy flea collars to keep the fleas off of Dog Dot Com. Now I see where Matthew is out shopping for fleas. What is up with that? I had no idea those things had value nor did it register until right now that those bugs have their own shopping centers. I'll be back in a minute. I think I might be able to harvest enough of those bad boys off of Dog Dot Com to finance a trip to Walt Disney World. Can anyone tell me what category I should use on eBay to find the largest market for these? And which would be better, start the bidding low and hope for lots of traffic or set a price I want to get right off the bat? Since I seem to have a pretty good supply, I am not sure I really need to put a reserve on these. Anyone have any experience in selling these fleas?

And why when I think about this do images of fleas dressed as the animatronic figures in Pirates of the Carribbean come to mind? Am I going to have to find one with red hair that can show her super structure?

Jeff

Jeff,
I dunno, I think you might have got it all wrong. The Flea Market is not where you buy fleas; it is more along the line of the stock market where you buy and sell shares in fleas.

I got the itch to invest in the flea market about 10 years ago. I was doing pretty good for a while until one of my principal investments got caught up in a flea powder scandal and artificially inflated the value of their fleas.

I invest mostly in dog fleas but the cat flea market is starting to claw its way to the forefront.

And Matt is correct flea's are a big commodity right now, not only do they keep you entertained IE (Flea Circus) but they make great eating, they kinda taste like chicken.

If you look on Ebay you will see that there are over 800 Flea items, the most Expensive being a New Modulus Flea 4 Item number 2543871526 selling for $1910.00

So go for it Matthew go get some more fleas dude.

Ed

Flea circus? Do they have like about 50 fleas dressed up like clowns and they try to pile into a really tiny car? I would LOVE to see that!

Jeff

I want to see the tiny elephants! What about the lion tamer? There's no way that they could stick their head in the lion's mouth. Unless they are itty-bitty themselves.

Do you have to pay full price? Or would it be reduced?

Enquiring minds don't want to know...but I do.
