The Big Flea Market is down at the Richmond raceway this weekend. DW Lauri (a.k.a. MeanLaureen) has been wanting to go in hopes of finding a Trading Spaces-like deal (how many of those designers regularly say "I found this at a flea market/thrift store for cheap"?), and I went along because it's sometimes interesting to just look at what the vendors have. For example, there was one guy there that had a bunch of old telephones (and I mean straight from Green Acres and older).
Lauri didn't have much luck. Everything she saw and liked had a pretty high price tag. Even negotiating wouldn't have brought it down to what Vern or Doug say they pay for stuff like that.
Me, on the other hand ...
I'm browsing and find some old Star Wars: Return of the Jedi glasses that were sold at Burger King back in 1983. I left them and decided I'd check before we left and maybe buy one. A little while later I'm coming out of another vendor's display and something on the back of a shelf catches my eye. A glass sold by Coca Cola for the movie "Mickey's Christmas Carol" featuring Uncle Scrooge as ol' Ebenezer. It was only $6 and in great shape. I don't know what the value is on it, but I only thought about it for maybe 2 seconds and bought it.
I found a few other vendors with glasses of other characters, from Bugs Bunny to Superman to Spider-Man to Mickey Mouse. One had a bunch in a Happy Birthday Mickey collector series by Pepsi. It looked like she had close to an entire set, but she was asking $23 for one with Scrooge and the nephews, and would only come down to $21 (she said that was close to her cost). For that I figured I could get all three of the Star Wars glasses I saw (which I did go back and buy for $15 before we left), so I passed. When I caught up with Lauri, she was buying something for me -- a glass from the series I had found, this one with Donald and the nephews, but paid $5 for it.
If I get a chance, I'll post some pictures of them later.
