Our traveling
Me, DH, My Mom, DS (12) and DD (7).
Background: We have had DAP in the past but let them expire after last summer. This was our first trip in over a year after spending a few times a year in the park. Since we have made so many visits, we dont feel like we have to over exert ourselves to get EVERYTHING done each day.
Monday Day 1: Drove down from Sacramento area. Left around 6:10am and arrived at our hotel at 12:20. We only stopped twice and had no traffic! Checked into the Beverly Garland Hotel in Hollywood. The room was nice, parking secure. The bathroom was very small. The next shuttle was to leave at 2:00 to Universal so we just unloaded the van and got ready for the park. In retrospect, we should have skipped Universal on Monday. We were only going because we got a day free by buying our tickets (which I found at Walmart for those looking for a whole lot cheaper than I had found online). It was HORRIBLY crowded, you couldnt move! It was lunch time so we looked for a place to eat. All the lines were super long. We stood in line for Pinks hotdogs. When it was our turn, they RAN OUT OF BUNS. So we waited 15 min. for them to get some. Everyone in line BUT us got a discount, as we had already paid. Go figure. It was the worst hotdog I have ever had, I could not finish it. I did not realize that it is some name brand place, but the skin was very tough and crunchy. Yuck. Afterwards we headed to the Simpsons ride. My DD (7) decided she just didnt want to go on anything unknown so she was too scared to do anything. DH and DS stood in line for an hour for a ride while we milled around. Tried to take pictures with Bart/Homer and Homer walked away from my DD to flirt with a woman and would not take a picture with my DD. Frustrating. Watched Shrek and then decided to go out to dinner outside the park. Stopped up front at a booth with a sign Plan your day at universal. When it was our turn, the guy working the booth turned and ran inside the building (guest services) without saying anything to us? It was just typical of our day. The crowd was pushy and no apologies for getting pushed over and run over by strollers. I get it was crowded, and a simple Im sorry would have gone a long way. Had dinner at Bubba Gumps after a little shopping at the City Walk and took a cab back to the hotel. Cabbie wasnt happy, as the hotel had a shuttle, but the shuttle wasnt due for at least another 70 minutes and we didnt want to wait, I guess he wanted a larger faire? Did some swimming in the hotel pool (which was crowded) and got in bed early.
Tuesday Day 2: Went to eat at the hotel restaurant as kids eat free. Well, kids dont get the buffet for free so you have to order off the menu. The waitress was rude and slow. Not a good start to the day. We watched as the line for the shuttle grew and grew, to at least 3 shuttles full before the park opened. Since we were checking out, we opted to just drive as we figured we wouldnt want to wait for a shuttle to and from the park. So glad we did, we even paid for preferred parking ($6 more) and it was so worth it to us. Got into park for their rope drop and went straight to the tram tour. I think we got on the 4th tram, took about 20 min. The Kong 360 3D really is impressive, but my 7 y/o was scared to death. Throw in Jaws and the Mummy stops and she was just done with us! My mom, DS and I then did Simpsons with 0 wait which was nice. Went to lower park area and walked on to The Mummy (wayyyyyy too short of a ride, I would have been upset if we waited an hour in line!) and then waited about 10 min for Jurassic Park. We decided to go back up and check out Waterworld show, but it had a huge line so we just called it a day and decided to leave for Disney. Traffic was a pain at 1:00pm to Anaheim. Took us about 1 ½ hours to get to HoJo. We stopped at Mimis for lunch before checking in and had a wonderful meal. This is when hubby got sick. He had some water in his ear, plus the motion from the rides, it just didnt sit well. So, we got all checked in and they got us a room early which was really very nice. My mom and I took the kiddos to get some groceries at Target while hubby stayed back. The pharmacist at Target was very nice and recommend a medicine for hubby to stop the getting ill. Since we hadnt planned on doing Disney this day, we opted to spend some time in the pool. I had bought some water toys at Target (Huge hit w/the kids) and had a wonderful time. We did have to make a trip to Vons for syrup, neither Target or the hotel carried any, and we had brought a cheap toaster and some Eggos for the kids for breakfast.
Wednesday Day 3: Made it out of the room at 7:55 and into the parks just after opening. Sent DS to get FP to Space and then we walked over to Frontierland and rode Big Thunder (kids favorite ride!). Rode Pirates and Haunted Mansion and time for a new pass, so we got Splash. Went to Jungle Boats and then I took the kids to the Tree house while mom and DH rested. Time for new passes, got Indy passes. Time for another ride on Big Thunder and then walked into FL. Park was very full by this time, so we decided to get one more pass to Space and head out. Drove over to the Garden Walk and had lunch at Cheesecake Factory. Good food. Back to the hotel for swimming and naps for all. We swam longer than we anticipated, and therefore slept a little longer than I would have liked. Didnt make it back to the parks until 7:00. Park was still packed, but doable, at least the parade was over. Grabbed a FP to Big Thunder and used the one from the morning. Stopped and ate dinner at Rancho Zocalo. It had been a year since our last trip, didnt know they actually give tiny water cups vs. a soda cup w/ice and water. I had brought some individual packs of Crystal Light to add to water for beverages vs. buying a $3 soda. Thankfully I had a water bottle and they had a cold water fountain that I could refill it and pour into the small cups. Good food as always. Spent the evening using up all our FP. Even got 2 more for BTMR, so kids went on it 3 times in a row. DH got a bench by the exit and was so entertained by watching some of the back area of Fantasmic (both shows). We watched the fireworks from that area, it was ok, but you couldnt hear the music at all. Left the park before the 2nd show of Fantasmic finished so we could avoid the crowds.
Thursday Day 4: This was our Disney California day. Kids were beat, so we slept in and decided to get there at the time DCA opened. We walked into Disneyland to grab a space FP in case we got bored at DCA before entering DCA. At DCA, sent a runner to Soarin for FP and then did the Disney Visa Meet and greet and actually got Pluto (we always get Chip and Dale) and then did Monsters Inc. w/5 min wait. Couldnt convince DD to do Tower of Terror so we headed to the Pier area. There were lines for most rides already. Kids road Golden Zephyr w/10 min wait and decided to skip Mullholland with a 45 min. wait. Stopped for lunch at Pizza Ow Mow (didnt realize they had some food as Pizza Port) and then they did Donalds Boat and we headed down to the Fun Wheel. Swings had a 50 min wait and the Fun Wheel was over an hour for the moving gondolas. Toy Story Mania was 65 min. So the kids decided to skip them all. We are so spoiled usually going in off season. Got FP to Screamin and sent DS down single rider line while DD did the carousel. Mom, DH and DD wanted to go back to room for a rest. I spent the afternoon in park with DS. We had PS for Ariels for our WOC passes at 5 so I walked around and let DS do single rider at MM and Screamin as well as stand in line for the swings. He had a good time. Met family back at gates after some ice cream and walked into Ariels at 4:45. Got checked in and we were first party seated. The food was good, way too much for all of us. A lot of the food was stuff we would never order, so it was fun to try it out. Got out of restaurant about 6:05 and walked to Screamin. It was supposed to be DD first ride on the coaster. She made it all the way to the gate before the tears started. She was trying to be so brave. She got in the coaster, belt on and she really started crying. The CM came and asked her what was wrong and she told him she was scared, so they told us that she shouldnt ride and they let her out. DS and I stayed and rode. Poor baby girl, maybe next trip. We then went in search of some new pillow pets, those stuffed animals that can also be pillows. DH had brought our 2 from the prior trip as well as snacks back to the park. He went and waited at the end of the pier to line up for WOC. We walked around and finally found that they were for sale at the Grizzly store. Headed back and the crowd was growing. No one could tell us where to line up. It was very chaotic. The made everyone move behind the rope, and this is where I started to get upset as by that time, the line was at least 15 deep all the way across and we had been the first ones there. Finally I found a CM that told me the dining passes would be put in a holding area right near where I was standing. We were the 3rd group into that area and I immediately lined up vs. sitting down. They walked us down about 7:27 and I got front rail center for our whole group. We used the pillow pets to sit on while we waited and snacked on our popcorn. I bought ponchos at Walmart and the kids used them and I was glad they did. It was a little windy so we were pretty damp. The spot was PERFECT, we all had a wonderful view. I did have an issue with the woman shoving her kid in front of DH and I and pushing my DD over. If you want a good spot, get there early. If she had ASKED us before shoving him up there, I would not have hesitated in allowing it. But her whole attitude about it was frustrating. We asked the boy to switch spots with my DD and she took offense to this. DH told her Im going to let him stay, but I want my daughter to stand next to her mother. The kid wouldnt sit still, kept leaving and coming back and she kept reaching in between us to pat him on the back the entire show. Anyways, my only complaint about WOC. DH decided to head back to the room after the show and DS and mom went on Soarin while DD and I checked out Glowfest. My impression of GF is this: Probably the only place you can take your 7 y/o to a bar/dance club. Music was loud. People dancing in the streets. It was cool, but a little much for little ones if you ask me. We decided to call it a day and head back.
Friday Day 5: Up early and at the gates for park opening. We went to FL first and did a couple of rides. Got right on Storybook Boats, we always forget this ride until there is a 45 min wait and it is my moms favorite. We walked right on the boat this time! Got BTMRR FP. We made PS at Carnation for 12:00 as we waited on Main Street for rope drop. Collected FP and did rides much the same as we had on our first day. Also hit ToonTown and did rides there. Got to Carnation around 11:45 for check in and we were seated within 5 min. I LOVE how Chef Oscar comes around to the tables. Love their soup. It was a nice lunch. Grabbed a FP on our way back to hotel. Swimming and nap time. My kids really do love the pool. We actually skipped the water play area this trip and spent all our time in the pool. After naps, we called in take out to PF Changs and ate dinner in the room. Back to the park to use FP about 6:00. We decided to catch the train. UGH. They say the wait is 5 min, it is more like 10 in between trains. The line was long, we got on the 2nd train thankfully. Rode Splash which had a 75 min wait! I have never stood in line for this ride. Thank goodness for FP. Bought the picture and then over to BTMRR, and we all went on. Big mistake for DH. He got ill shortly after He left to go back and be miserable in the room while we used the rest of our FP. We were on Space during most of the fireworks. Did Autopia (FP!) and called it a night about 10:00. Mom and DS stayed on Main Street to watch the new movie about opening day while DD and I stopped at Cold Stone for a cool treat.
Saturday Day 6: This was our last day and also our MM day. DH was still not feeling well and my mom had a block out day for her DAP. So, just me and the kiddos headed over and got in line before opening. Walked in and tried to go to Buzz first, it was supposed to be the first day open during our trip. It was still down, so we walked on to Star Tours. Interesting, when we got to the front loading area, there was no CM to direct us, everyone just had to pick a line and jump in. There was only about a 2 min wait so it was nice. Buzz was still down so over to FL. Toad, carousel, Pinocchio and Snow White. PP only had maybe a 10 min wait, I couldnt believe there was no line. Afterwards, back to Buzz. They actually turned the FP on early (it was 7:50) so we got a FP and went on. I got the #1 score for the day though I knew it wouldnt last, it was still cool to see it on my picture. Over to BTMRR which was down. Yuck. Mom bought her block out pass and met us in Adventureland. DD and I did Jungle boats while DS and her did Indy. We met at Riverbelle for breakfast in the park. Made our way around to FL. DH had promised the kiddos face painting. He met us in the park as they were finishing up and while I was ordering my Disney Art at the same location. We got ROBINSON done, this is one of my favorite souvenirs! Rode on Small World with no wait. Walked over to get Space FP and saw there was no wait for Nemo, well, only about a 20 min wait and we hadnt done this ride since it first opened. After collecting numerous FP, we took the monorail over to DtD. Kids were excited, they got to sit in the very back. DtD had the Tony Hawk thing going on, kids got some posters, stickers and a big foam thumb and we went to AMC Theaters to watch Despicable Me. It was my 2nd time seeing it, I did fall asleep once or twice (oops!). After the movie we went to our PS at Rainforest Café. The people here werent as pleasant as I would have liked. At lunch and then decided to do some shopping. Kids had GC to Build a Bear and Disney to spend. We did the Build a Bear special (any animal, any outfit, 1 pair of shoes for $29.99). Kids picked their animals right away, the outfits took a bit longer. DS really wanted a basketball outfit and we couldnt find one anywhere. Well, let me tell you, after he tried 2 different outfits on his bear, I went and asked. Turns out, UPSTAIRS they have TONS of sports clothes. It would have been nice to know that up front, would have saved me about 20 min in this store! He found a Sac Kings outfit and was super happy. Walked out and we saw the D23 store. I was going to skip it but DH said I should check it out. SO glad I did! I got my Dooney bag (55th pattern) and a small zip wallet (which I did not see in the park) and was happy to discover they took my gift card and gave me an AP discount! Off to WoD and I was able to keep the kiddos focused and they spent their cards on some vinylmation characters and some toys. We even picked up two of the suitcase sets for 9.95, what a deal. Afterwards it was off too DCA to get our AP. I figured this line would be shorter than in DL. I was right, we had no wait. DH decided to go back to the hotel and we took kiddos to DL. Tried the train again, same issue as the night before, long wait. Got off in Tomorrowland. We were so tired, my feet were killing me. We stopped for a quick snack in Tomorrowland
and went on Space and then walked over to Frontierland for BTMRR. It was getting late, the park was packed and nighttime activities would be starting soon. One more trip on Buzz and then I went to pick up my ROBINSON art and met everyone at the monorail. Seriously, my feet were done. I could not stand still for a second. Just missed the train so the kids were first on the next one and got to sit in the front with the pilot. The other CM in the train said the park had been crazy busy all day and it was unexpected. Walked over to the taxi loading and got in a taxi to go to HoJo. Well worth the $8.15 faire + tip it cost. Got to the hotel at 9:05 and kids quickly changed for a dip in the pool. It was so nice, it was still warm out. We watched the fireworks from the pool which was very cool. A perfect ending to a great trip.
