So, I made a Stouffer's lasagna and garlic bread in the oven, then turned it off. About 20 minutes later I notice it smells like soemthing is burning in our apartment and check the over - it's still on, and probably at MAX temperature!!!! I start turning the knob up then back to "off" and nothing happens, so DBF hits the breaker for the oven. Any idea what would cause this? We live in an apartment and were planning leaving the breaker off and calling maintenance first thing in the morning. Bums me out because I love to cook and was planning on making chicken parm tomorrow night. Let me know your thoughts.

No technical advice, but it sounds like the final scene of Carrousel of Progress at MK.

Haha - now that you mention it...

I'm just glad that we didn't turn it off and assume it was off and leave!

Been there, done that! The first Thanksgiving DH and I hosted in our brand spankin' newly built house with all our family present- the motherboard type thing in our electric oven just blew up while we were cooking the turkey! We had to turn it off at the breaker as well, and then we had to wait 4 and a half days to get a repairman out because it was the holiday weekend, lol! He replaced that computer part thing in the oven, it did not cost anything since the oven was obviously still under warranty...

I think you mentioned an apartment in your post- start by contacting your maintenance people, see if they can fix it for you. Otherwise you will probably have to call the 1-800 phone number that should be listed either on your oven door somewhere, or with the manual that should have been provided by your apartment managers. Good Luck! :goodvibes

I would also call your apartment manager first. They should be the one to call for repairs.

My oven did the opposite. I would turn it on and it would shut itself off. It didn't do it all the time, but often enough it became a pain. It is a gas oven and one day I turned it on and then smelled gas. The oven then turned itself off. It would not ignite. I got a repairman out here and for the first hour he was here, it worked perfectly as he was trying to find a solution. Finally it started acting up for him. He replaced a part and we hope it works. This was just a few days ago and I have not used it since then.

A few years ago we were using our oven and then turned it off when we were done. However, we started to hear a low hum and noticed that the element appeared to still be burning. The element had begun to shorten and was 'burning' out. But what was scary was that this was happening when the oven was turned off. We had to pull the stove/oven away from the wall and unplug it or it would have eventually started to go throught the wiring and into the wall. We called Sears, I believe, and replaced the element.

We were almost on the 10 o'clock news that night!

When I had an electric oven I had the element get so hot it was actually melting. There were little chocolate chip sized bits of metal dropping off onto the bottom of the oven. It happened while I was baking my son's birthday cake! I had to do a redo and bake it at the neighbors house.

They came and fixed it, siad it was the temperature gauge or something - guess we'll see if it works when I try to make chicken parm tonight!
