I had contacted someone who had been personally recommended to move us in three weeks. He agreed to do it, and was supposed to come give us an estimate. Despite leaving him several messages, he never showed up. I was so sure he would follow through, I left it almost until the last minute. Now I am going to have to go looking in the yelow pages for a local mover. I hate that. Grrrrrr. Why can't people just be up front and say if they do not want the job?

There has been a lot of media attention lately about dishonest movers hijacking your stuff for more cash. Do your research carefully!

Well, we had movers who didn't show up. Luckly, we could stay another night. We found a new mover to move us the next day.

You are the 3rd person to complain about movers to me in the last couple of months. Apparently, its becoming increasingly difficult to find a good moving company. My girlfriend had the moving company she had lined up just not show up. She was there on moving day, waiting, and they just never showed! Be glad you found out sooner rather than later. Do you have any friends who can recommend a company they have used? I always avoid having to use the yellow pages if at all possible.

I just moved 1200 miles and the movers were horrible! Well, actually, the people were nice, but management, oh man, not good at all! I have national company I don't reccommend at all! They lost dh's suv which we paid for them to ship. They put it on the back of the moving truck where it was suppose to stay and they took it off without our permission or knowledge. They put it on a car hauler and we didn't see it for 3 weeks after the date we were guaranteed to have all our stuff! Moving companies have a major racket going! I hope you can work it out!

B-I-L had the movers basically kidnap all his stuff over Memorial Day Weekend. He had moved into a temp. apartment since he sold his house and the new one was not done being built so the moving company stored everything they didn't need. The agreement was the movers would deliver everything that had been stored the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend. They called him that week and basically said sorry you'll have to wait until the following Tuesday or Wednesday because no one here wants to work Thursady and Friday. Luckily they had planned to be at the lake over the weekend so they just left a day early then had it out with the movers after they moved his stuff. He waited until after the stuff had been delivered so he didn't have to worry about anything getting "accidently" damaged.

Had no idea you were moving! Wish it was down my way! Like others here, I've heard the many horror stories concerning movers. What I really don't understand is WHY it continues to be such a corrupt industry. Major news programs have exposed their unscrupulous tactics time and again. And the fact that you actually had these people RECOMMENDED to you.....geez! So sorry to hear of this frustration. You really didn't need this!

If your into back breaking work, and are moving over 500 miles...

Check out ABF - they were wonderful. you pack and move everything yourself..they drive it.

Lots of work but was the cheapest and best option I found when reasearching the move to florida ..... and they were Great!

DFi has moved a lot in the last few years (since meeting me!). When we met he was down south, then he moved up to Ontario (Canada). I helped him move, and that time we did it with a U-Haul and moved everything ourselves. Quite an experience!

Then he moved again, this time basically halfway across the country. But this time his work paid for the move, so we had movers do it. The drive was easier, but what a pain dealing with the moving company! Because it was (for some reason) going to take them longer to deliver the stuff then for us to drive, we took a few days beforehand and flew down to LA (gotta get the Disneyland visit in!). DFi checked in for messages at a stopover on our way back and lo and behold if there wasn't a message from the movers saying they weren't able to deliver his stuff on Friday as promised, it would be more like Tuesday or Wednesday as the local office there was overbooked. The stuff was actually in the city, but they had no one to deliver it!

After a few phone calls back and forth we finally got things resolved. We made it clear to them that they were in breach of contract and that they would be responsible for any expenses incurred as a result including hotel & food, and clothing if need be since he was supposed to start in at work on the Monday. They miraculously found a crew able to deliver the stuff only 1 day late, and did indeed cover the additional expenses.

Lesson learned: The U-Haul wasn't in the best of shape and it was a pain to drive around with, but at least we knew where the stuff was!
