Our Crazy, Awesome, Imperfect Trip (May 2011)- Updated 8/21

Part 21: Home - Monday 5/30 (Day 10)
Back to the Real World
:tinker:

Our flights home were pretty uneventful. It was Memorial Day, so the airport was pretty crowded. We stopped for groceries on our way back from the airport, picked up our cat from the boarding place, and finally made it home. These pictures were taken at the hotel, but thought I'd share them here.

Our dog loves his Mickey stuffed animal. This was on sale. It's a fleece toy, which we knew he would like. The little Minnie was a key chain that we turned into a cat toy by tying it to a piece of string. It's been a huge hit.

Bought candy for various family members. This is just some of it, but you get the idea.

IMG_0900.jpg

I bought this Minnie Mouse for my baby niece, who was born in February. It's very well made, but in hindsight I probably should have skipped it (that girl has so many toys, lol). For future trips, I think we'll skip the souvenirs for other people...

I was excited about this travel coffee mug, but it really sucks. The lid leaks big time :( I love the ornament, though. The frame in the box is the black one with tiny mickey heads in it.

Before our trip, my SO had made comments about how "it will be many years before we go back again" (because we don't have kids yet).

Less than a week after we returned, he began making comments about "when can we go back?" Someone at his work has parents with DVC, who told him all about MVMCP. Now we are saving for a December 2012 trip! He also wants to try every Disney Deluxe hotel there is, so we are going to try to stay at a Deluxe for our next trip. We are going to skip giving each other birthday, Christmas, and anniversary presents, and open a Disney savings account. We've been real sad about being home, but planning for a new trip helps!

I'm going to post some reviews soon (including dining reviews) in this thread, but that about wraps up our trip :(

:tinker:

Loved your TR and sad to see it end :( So glad that your SO is wanting to go back so soon! Disney does that to you ;)

I wasn't sure if my youngest 2 DS's had a great time on their first trip in late Nov 2010 but my youngest said the other day "we really need to get back to our Happy place!" I'll always remember the look on his face when we arrived at BWV - he couldn't believe we were staying there. (I have rented points for the past 3 trips and stayed at BWV so would love to try another resort next time).

You will love WDW at Christmas time

Part 22: Dining Reviews
Quick-Service Dining
:tinker:

Picabu (Dolphin)
Picabu was the quick-service go-to option at our hotel. I got pretty sick of eating here. The food was hit or miss. When you are there after-hours, your options are limited to the pre-packaged sandwiches and salads. I really disliked the salads. The hot options when they had the kitchen open were pretty tasty. I had a hamburger that was delicious, but expensive (we paid nearly $30 for 2 adults). The hamburgers were more restaurant style than fast food style. My biggest pet peeve with Picabu was the 'service fee'. What service? For the same price as Picabu, you can eat at The Fountain, a table service restaurant in the hotel. Overall, it was nice to have somewhere to go to get food at 3 a.m., but I liked the food courts at the Disney mods I've been to more.

Boardwalk Bakery (Boardwalk)
Not impressed! I picked up some croissants (plain for me, chocolate for my SO) one night for breakfast the next morning. The line was pretty slow, and it was 20 minutes before closing. The croissants were ok, edible but nothing special. I'm really picky about croissants, though. The big disappointment was my tomato mozzarella sandwich. The bread was dry but soggy at the same time (how is that even possible?). Maybe the trick here is to go in the morning, not at night.

Pollo Campero & Fresh A-Peel (Downtown Disney)
When we went to Downtown Disney, we wanted to eat at Wolfgang Puck Express, but it was closed. We decided to try this place, and were pleasantly surprised. My SO had the grilled chicken with black beans and rice from Pollo Campero, and I had the citrus grilled chicken wrap from Fresh A-Peel. The restaurants are in the same building, with Babycakes (a cupcake place). It was a great meal for the price. Wouldn't choose it over some of the other dining options in the area, but nice if you want something different.

Flame Tree Barbecue (Animal Kingdom)
I had read great things about Flame Tree Barbecue, and am happy to report that it lived up to its reputation. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, which came with baked beans, and my SO had the ribs. A great lunch! My only complaint was eating outside and watching a CM squish a cockroach. Big appetite killer. Highly recommend the food here, though! Would eat here over the other quick service options at Animal Kingdom any day.

Aloha Isle (Magic Kingdom)
Finally tried my first Dole Whip! While it was delicious, I think they are a little over-hyped. I had the plain pineapple soft serve version. Next time I'll have to try a Dole Whip float. It's hard to miss the line for Aloha Isle in Adventureland. The line was crazy long, but it was super hot and people go crazy over these things. Not sure you can go wrong with anything from here, it's all delicious desserts and drinks.

IMG_0311-1.jpg

Sleepy Hollow (Magic Kingdom)
Sleepy Hollow is a dessert and drink place not too far from the castle, in Liberty Square. While the funnel cakes smell amazing from here, I had just a plain vanilla ice cream cup. I think the ordering system is a little confusing if you aren't waiting for anything hot, but maybe I was just tired. Can't go wrong with anything from Sleepy Hollow, either.

Sunshine Tree Terrace (Magic Kingdom)
More drinks and desserts! The raspberry lemonade slush from here was fantastic, not too sweet but not tart. I think they had the pineapple soft serve here too, if you don't feel like waiting at Aloha Isle (they are both in Adventureland). Yum!

Liberty Square Market (Magic Kingdom)
We just bought frozen coke here, it was very refreshing. They had actual food options too, though. I can't remember what they had, but it was pre-packaged stuff I think.

Toluca Turkey Legs Co. (Hollywood Studios)
We had turkey legs for dinner during our night at Hollywood Studios. There wasn't much else open (it was Extra Magic Hours). They are soooo good! A little messy to eat, but not too expensive. My SO had turkey legs from a cart in Magic Kingdom later during our trip because he loved the one from HS so much.

Part 23: Dining Reviews
Table Service / Signature Dining
:tinker:

This was my first trip making ADRs. I had a lot of fun picking restaurants out! We weren't on a dining plan, but probably will try to get it next trip. We only planned our trip about a month ahead of time, and were there during free dining, so I'm glad we were able to try the places we did.

Shula's Steak House (Dolphin)
We celebrated my SO's birthday at Shula's. I really wish I had known that you could get gift certificates for it from restaurant.com, but lesson learned. Our reservation was fairly late, and we knew we wouldn't make it on time. They were great about bumping us to a later time. The restaurant was pretty empty, there were maybe 3 or 4 groups there. The food was excellent! My favorite was actually my appetizer, the tomato mozzarella chopped salad. I could have just had that for dinner, it was huge (and I'm not a big steak person). For dinner, we each had steak (obviously) and broccoli as a side. I can't remember what kind of steak we each had, but I know I couldn't finish it. I really liked Shula's. I think it's a chain restaurant, but there isn't one by where we live so I didn't mind. It was perfect for my SO's birthday, he loves steak and the restaurant was a nice break in a very upscale adult atmosphere. It was also great to just take the elevator upstairs after dinner!

The Fountain (Dolphin)
The Fountain is reasonably priced. A lot of the menu is the same as Picabu or what you find on the room service menus in the hotel. The dining area isn't very large, and is inside the hotel, right behind the big fountain outside of the hotel (hence the name). It's supposed to resemble a diner. I had a BLT, and my SO had a hamburger. We brought our hotel mugs for the free drinks, but they just gave us actual glasses at no charge. I don't have a picture from the restaurant, but this picture is at the top of the escalator you take down to the restaurant (bluezoo on the left, Fountain at the right), or outside to the real fountain or to the Swan. I wish we ate here more than Picabu, it would have cost the same.

IMG_0435.jpg

Garden Grove (Swan)
We ate here for free, so my review might be a little biased. We ate here on Mediterranean night, and were pleasantly surprised. The salad was the best salad of our trip, and the buffet options were actually pretty great. I wasn't too thrilled about the character aspect of it. Pluto and Goofy were there, taking tons of time with each table. The restaurant was not crowded at all, you could have walked right in. I think that if you are staying in the area and want a character dining experience without the crowd, this would be a great pick. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but it was a nice option for being walking distance to our hotel (and, of course, it was free...). You can sort of see Goofy in this picture. The restaurant is circle shaped, with one dining area elevated in the middle, and then tables circling that on the lower level.

California Grill (Contemporary)
Amazing!! My new favorite restaurant ever. We barely made our reservation, but it was a non issue. We had to wait a little while, but that gave us time to check out the view from outside. We went right from Magic Kingdom to the restaurant, which in hindsight was a bad idea. I felt under-dressed, even though I technically wasn't compared to other people in the restaurant (I had a sundress, cardigan, and flip flops on). We were seated in the quiet wine room off the main dining area, which was fabulous. Our server was great, and the food was amazing. I had added my SO's birthday to the reservation, so they had little Mickey confetti on the table. For an appetizer, we had the four cheese flatbread (fantastic!). I had the pork tenderloin for dinner, while my SO had the oak-fired beef. Our dessert was bread pudding with apple. So wonderful! Can't remember which wine we had, but that was great too.

Rose & Crown (Epcot)
We had lunch at Rose & Crown on our Epcot day. The food was o.k., but it did not live up to the hype. I think part of the problem was that I ordered a salad (it was sooo hot outside, that's all that sounded good). I also ordered a small cup of the potato leek soup, because I felt like I should order something British. The soup was great. The salad was the Romaine Salad, which came with small, but delicious, cheddar scones. I can't remember what my SO ordered. Our server was excellent, one of the best (if not the best) during our trip. I added my SO's birthday to this reservation, too. They brought a fun little card out for him. I think Rose & Crown is worth trying at least once, but for $55 (for 2 adults, and only 1 beer between the 2 of us), it wasn't worth it. We only waited 5 min. for our table here, which was nice.

Biergarten (Epcot)

I was not looking forward to eating here, and almost switched our reservation. I don't really like buffets, and am not familiar with German food. I also hated the idea of eating with strangers, I'm not a big people person. I loved Biergarten! The food was great, and the atmosphere was very uplifting and fun. I would not hesitate to eat here again. We only waited about 5 min. for our table because of our reservation, but the walk-up wait was 40 min. (not bad actually, considering how crowded Epcot was that day). Our meal was timed so that we walked right outside to catch Illuminations.
