Our Crazy, Awesome, Imperfect Trip (May 2011)- Updated 8/21

We chose the same song for the ride! I wish I had more time to look at the selections, I felt rushed making such an important decision!

Part 12: Islands of Adventure - Thursday 5/26 (Day 6)
Wizarding World of Harry Potter
:tinker:

We love Harry Potter, our first movie date was to go see Goblet of Fire. We had spent a little bit of time at WWOHP yesterday, but wanted more time to check the area out. We also hadn’t gone on the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, yet. We left Universal Studios and by about 6:30 p.m., we were walking through Islands of Adventure toward WWOHP. We walked through Suess Landing, which was cute.

Our destination:

IMG_0463.jpg

First went to Honeyduke's & Zonko's, but they were so packed we left. Took our picture in front of the train, and then went into Dervish and Banges, which was also beyond crowded. Bought scarves, t-shirts, etc. The details were really neat, but it was really tough to move around. Owl Post was really crowded too. A few pics of the theme/decor, which was awesome:

Next, we made our way to the Forbidden Journey ride. On the way, caught this:

IMG_0484.jpg

The line for Butterbeer was insane:

IMG_0483.jpg

Snapped some pics of Hogwarts:

IMG_0486.jpg

IMG_0493.jpg

I was so excited to see this!

IMG_0487.jpg

Into the ride we went. The line area was awesome, we didn't have much time to check out the details though. They did a great job with the ride, parts of it come really close to your face. It was very impressive.

IMG_0488.jpg

After the Forbidden Journey, checked out Filch's Emporium, then made our way back to Three Broomsticks for some Frozen Butterbeer. The Frozen Butterbeer was so much better than the regular (though both are delicious). This was the view from the outdoor seating area at Three Broomsticks.

IMG_0505.jpg

We had about 5 minutes before the park closed (8 p.m.) so we ran to Dragon Challenge to try the red side. There was no line, we walked right on. The red side wasn't as intense as the blue. So much fun!

IMG_0509.jpg

After Dragon Challenge, we went to try Honeyduke's and Zonko's again.

IMG_0520.jpg

IMG_0521.jpg

IMG_0523.jpg

Because the park closed, the stores were emptying out. We took quite some time, and by the time we left, Zonko's was empty.

IMG_0525.jpg

Very pretty at night.

IMG_0532.jpg

IMG_0529.jpg

Some of the stuff we bought (well, I should say my SO bought). He went nuts with souvenirs. I bought a t-shirt and chocolate frog:

IMG_0550.jpg

This shirt runs *really* small. I'm a size 4, and the small is way too tight. It's an adult size, too. Am debating if it's worth ordering the medium online, I hate spending $30 for a t-shirt I already bought.

IMG_0546.jpg

By the time we left IoA, it was probably around 8:30 p.m. We had dinner reservations at Shula's and were running behind. All in all, a great day at WWOHP. We could have spent so much more time there.

Part 13: Shula's - Thursday 5/26 (Day 6)
Birthday Dinner at Shula's
:tinker:

We were running late after spending so much time at WWOHP, and knew we'd be cutting it close to make our reservation at Shula's. Thankfully, it wasn't crowded (it's not on the dining plan and is at the Dolphin instead of a theme park, so that's understandable) so our lateness was no problem whatsoever. We had enough time to run upstairs to our hotel room before heading to dinner.

IMG_0433.jpg

I'm not a huge steak person, but my SO is. Shula's is supposed to be the best steakhouse on property, and it was conveniently located in our hotel. The atmosphere was great, very adult and upscale. Menu was on the football:

IMG_0553.jpg

My SO loved his steak. I honestly loved my salad more than my steak but, again, am not a big steak person. I'm going to add dining reviews in a separate section on this trip report, eventually, so will go into more detail in that I suppose. After we ate at California Grill, my SO wasn't wanting a second elaborate meal (he didn't realize CG was so expensive and was feeling guilty). I told him it was his birthday and I would be taking him to Shula's! I'm glad we stuck with Shula's.

After dinner, we walked around the Boardwalk area a little bit. I took this picture of our lobby, it's a pretty area:

IMG_0431.jpg

The next day was our Epcot day, I couldn't wait!

:tinker:

Loved reading about your experience at IOA and universal. That's great that the lines for Harry Potter were so low at the end of the day. It seems like a good strategy if the lines are long in the morning.

Universal must be making a killing off of Harry Potter merchandise. I know I certainly spent way more than I should have.

Loving your trip report. Wow, even tho you are getting a late start you seem to be making up the time. Love the boardwalk at night. It is so peaceful.

I have been at a conference for a few days and missed so many updates!

Great updates! Sorry to hear about your SO's knee, but he is such a trooper!

Thanks, the knee thing was such a bummer. It's better now that we're home (less walking, no humidity), but his appointment with the knee doctor isn't for another few weeks. I just hope he doesn't need another surgery.

All caught up on your report. I am jealous that you guys got to do those PM EMH's, with 3 young ones it's just not an option for us right now :(. Can't wait to hear more!

I guess that's one perk of traveling without kids...though I would trade in a heartbeat. :cloud9:

Loving your report!!

You are making me regret not getting tix to universal!! Ack! I guess I will just have to plan another trip!

We really had a great time at Universal. I would have been just fine staying at Disney, but I'm glad we did make the trip over to Universal.

So loving your report. Your room upgrades were awesome! I love Universal and The Hulk and Spiderman are the Best. The Mummy is awesome too! Jurrasic parks Dip is HUGE!!! After the ride the pictures of peoples faces are hilarious! :lmao: Including your own. :rotfl2:! Can't wait to hear about your second day there. We used one day for both parks which wasn't too bad but I could have used another day.

I'm pretty sure the picture of my face was indicative of how I felt, :scared1:. Didn't buy any ride photos this trip, hehe.

We chose the same song for the ride! I wish I had more time to look at the selections, I felt rushed making such an important decision!

Ugh, I felt the exact same way! Not enough time to pick. :sad2:

Universal must be making a killing off of Harry Potter merchandise. I know I certainly spent way more than I should have.

No kidding! I really don't go crazy with souvenirs, but he sure did this trip. It was his first trip to WDW (and Universal), I was just thrilled to see him so happy for once. The stores at HP were just insane.

Loving your trip report. Wow, even tho you are getting a late start you seem to be making up the time. Love the boardwalk at night. It is so peaceful.

Thanks! We were so lucky with ride lines, and not having kids meant we could run around a lot quicker I think. The boardwalk was great at night, I loved staying in that area.

Glad to hear your SO's knee is doing better.:)

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter looks awesome! I love HP, too, so I will definitely be making a trip next time I am in Orlando!

The birthday dinner at Shula's sounds great. Did you try any of the other restaurants at the Swan/Dolphin? I just bought some restaurant.com gift certificates for bluezoo and Kimono's. I figure, even if I never use them, they were only $2 each!

Yay for HP! It was so much fun.

We ate more than I thought we would at the hotel. In addition to Shula's and Picabu, we ate at Fountain and Garden Grove. When they moved our hotel room, we got a voucher for a free lunch or dinner at one of the restaurants (except for bluezoo, Shula's, or the italian restaurant over at the Swan). I wanted to use it at Kimono's but we didn't think we'd get enough food with the voucher, so we decided to use it at Garden Grove. We were pleasantly surprised by Garden Grove, the food was great. Fountain was great, too, and was pretty much the same price as stuff at Picabu. I wanted to try bluezoo, but with our dinner at Shula's and our dinner at California Grill we didn't want a third extravagent (for us) dinner. I need to look into restaurant.com I guess!

Part 14: Epcot - Friday 5/27 (Day 7)
World Showcase and Lunch at Rose & Crown
:tinker:

I knew Epcot was going to be packed today. It wasn't a "park to avoid" (Hollywood Studios took that title, because of Star Wars Weekend). Still, it had Extra Magic Hours that night from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. and it was the Friday of Memorial Day Weekend.

One awesome thing about staying at the Dolphin is being walking distance to Epcot. We decided to try the boat to Epcot because of my SO's knee, even though I'd read that walking would be quicker. We walked up to the boat dock and *just* missed a boat (not sure if it was for Epcot or Hollywood Studios, though). Another boat finally arrived and we slowly made our way to the dock for Yacht Club/Beach Club.

Pic of our hotel from boat area.

IMG_0564-1.jpg

Waiting...

IMG_0565-1.jpg

It took so long just getting to the next stop on the boat (Yacht Club/Beach Club), so we got off and walked the rest of the way to Epcot. We had lunch reservations at Rose & Crown for 2:05 p.m., and there was no way we were going to make it there in time if we stayed on the boat (it still had to stop at BoardWalk). I took this picture on our way to Epcot, it's one of my favorites from the trip.

IMG_0568-1.jpg

This was my first time entering Epcot through World Showcase, it felt a little weird. Mary Poppins walked by us on her way out and our way in, talking to her umbrella. :rotfl2:

We walked up to the Rose & Crown and were seated within 5 minutes. This poor woman next to us was trying to make a dinner reservation for that night at Rose & Crown, and she didn’t really speak English. The CM kept trying to explain to her that they couldn't take reservations at the restaurant (forget that there probably wasn't even one available for that night...), but it wasn't sinking in.

IMG_0570.jpg

IMG_0582.jpg

Lunch was nice, but not worth the $. We ate at an Irish pub at Universal the previous day (Finnegan's), which in retrospect wasn't the best idea knowing that we were going to Rose & Crown. Our bill was about $55. I had the potato and leek soup, plus the romaine salad. I ordered the salad because it was too hot outside for anything else (except soup? lol), and it came with cheddar scones which sounded good. I can't remember what my SO had, but did take a picture of his $8 beer (and the cool ceiling).

IMG_0573.jpg

Our server was great :thumbsup2, definitely one of the better ones we had during the trip (the server at CG was pretty awesome, too). I added my SO's birthday to most of our dining reservations, so they brought him this:

IMG_0577.jpg

After lunch, we walked through the UK pavilion and briefly through the Canada one, toward Future World. I thought I would end up buying a bunch of stuff at the UK area, but refrained! :)

IMG_0583.jpg

Took this for my Canadian brother-in-law:

Next up: Future World!

:tinker:

Restaurant.com periodically runs these deals for $25 gift certificates for various restaurants for only $2 each. You can only use one per table, but they never expire (or at least this is my understanding). They are great! I think the special just ended today, but if I see anything, I will keep you posted!

Good to know that the boats to Epcot are slow. I am trying to plan my family trip for next year, and we are thinking about staying at an Epcot resort. And my uncle has bad knees, too, so other modes of transportation will be really important.

Love that you saw Mary Poppins on your way to dinner in the UK!

Aw, glad your SO got a b-day card! :)

Sorry about your SO's knee!
You had some great meals!
Universal and islands of adventure look like great fun! I can't wait until my kids are tall enough for the height restrictions so we can go

The boat was nice at the *end* of the day when we weren't rushing to get somewhere, but much too slow when you are anxious to get to Epcot. I wish we had taken the boat to HS instead of our rental car, that would have been nice and I think Swan/Dolphin is probably the last stop on that route on the way to HS.

We did eat at some nice restaurants. Our trip was booked last minute (about 6 weeks before we left), so I was surprised we were able to get an ADR for California Grill (it was for 9:40 p.m., but still). I kept messing with our dining reservations and lunch was available at Rose & Crown even up to maybe a week or two before our trip. There were restaurants we had ADRs for that we never made it too, but that just means we'll have to go back.

Part 15: Epcot - Friday 5/27 (Day 7)
Future World
:tinker:

After lunch at Rose & Crown, we went to check to see if there happened to be any fast passes for Soarin'. The wait was 120 min. You already know how the FP availability turned out, but it was worth a shot. :rotfl2:

I'd been on the one at California Adventure, but not the one at Epcot. When I was last at WDW, they were building the one in Epcot. It was a must-do for the day, I just wasn't prepared to wait 2 hours for it. Not yet..

IMG_0642.jpg

Went over to Test Track and same thing…no FP, and a super long wait (90 min., I think). Not happening. We grabbed FP for Mission Space and wandered into Innoventions.

IMG_0588.jpg

My SO saw the simulator ride (Sum of All Thrills), and thought it was pretty neat that Raytheon sponsored it. The wait was 30 min., but he wanted to try it. I couldn’t enjoy the simulator because I had to go to the bathroom too much. It was painful. Ugh. Lesson learned.

IMG_0591.jpg

Snapped a few pictures of Spaceship Earth. We didn’t go on the ride, I was not a fan of the old one, and we had places to see and things to do!

IMG_0599.jpg

Storm was coming in...

IMG_0601.jpg

Next stop! I can't remember if this was open when I was last there...I vaguely remember it still being the Living Seas and they were in the process of Nemo-izing it? Doesn't matter, it's great either way. Kind of sad the gift shop didn't have Little Mermaid stuff, though (you'd think it would?).

IMG_0604.jpg

IMG_0605.jpg

We had such a fun time, we got to see the Dolphins out and about (no pics though).

IMG_0625.jpg

Seahorses are my fave.

IMG_0628.jpg

Love that the manatees are boat strike rescues, too. :thumbsup2

IMG_0634.jpg

IMG_0615.jpg

The stormy weather left for a little while, at least...

IMG_0639.jpg

Tried Soarin' again to check the line...it was still 120 min. So what's the closest thing? Living with the Land! Last time I went on this I was pretty unimpressed, but actually enjoyed it this time around.

IMG_0643.jpg

Back we went to the other side of Future World (again, lol), to use our FP for Mission Space. When I first went on this in 2004, they didn't have a green option. I remember getting pretty sick on it and was not looking forward to riding this again. My SO is a space fanatic and really wanted to try orange, so orange it was. This poor girl in front of us in line was crying because she didn't want to go on it, and her mom was pushing her and pushing her...thankfully the CM stepped in and helped the little girl out. What is wrong with parents? If the kid is that terrified, don't force it. :confused3

Thankfully, the ride was much better this time around for me. Maybe because I listened to the advice to keep your head back and eyes open on the screen. It was much less intense than I remembered. Yay for that!

IMG_0651.jpg

One of the few shows my SO remembers from his 1-day visit to Disneyland in the 80s was Captain EO. I vaguely remember it, too. We stopped to watch it, it's so cheesy

IMG_0652-1.jpg

So that was most of our day in Future World. No Test Track, and no Soarin'....but maybe later? ;)

IMG_0653.jpg

Next up: Biergarten & Illuminations!

:tinker:

Great update!

Storm was coming in...

IMG_0601.jpg

This is a great picture! The sky looks so ominous, but somehow perfect behind Spaceship Earth.

Tried Soarin' again to check the line...it was still 120 min. So what's the closest thing? Living with the Land! Last time I went on this I was pretty unimpressed, but actually enjoyed it this time around.

Hope you made it on Soarin' later in the day! Do you know if the Disneyland version is the same as Disney World?

This poor girl in front of us in line was crying because she didn't want to go on it, and her mom was pushing her and pushing her...thankfully the CM stepped in and helped the little girl out. What is wrong with parents? If the kid is that terrified, don't force it. :confused3

This confuses me, too.

One of the few shows my SO remembers from his 1-day visit to Disneyland in the 80s was Captain EO. I vaguely remember it, too. We stopped to watch it, it's so cheesy

I hope this is still there the next time I visit!

Enjoyed your update. Some parents make their kids go on rides because they want to and don't want to leave them. It is sad.

IMG_0113-1.jpg

I visited this hotel before and thought it looked nice....Except for this ceiling! I just don't get the "inflatable" ceiling. I don't think it looks good.

I am enjoying your report. It seems uncrowded at the parks. Nice!

Thank you :) I agree, the ceiling is a little odd. Before our trip, I kept reading on this board about how awesome the lobby is. I was honestly a little underwhelmed when we walked in. I think people were referring to the fake sky when you walk in the doors :confused3. It's a nice lobby, but not amazing. We really did enjoy the hotel, though.

Part 16: Epcot - Friday 5/27 (Day 7)
Biergarten, Illuminations, and More Rides
:tinker:

I was getting slightly anxious spending so much time in Future World because I wanted to spend more time in the World Showcase before the day was out. WS is my favorite part of Epcot, and we hadn't really spent much time there at that point. After we watched Captain EO, it was time to head over to Biergarten for our dining reservation anyway, so we made our way back to World Showcase.

IMG_0661.jpg

We ducked into Mexico real quick and went on the Three Caballeros ride. I love the Mexico pavilion, but didn't realize they had a new (new to me) ride. There was a boat ride in there before, I think...but this one seemed new (which I later confirmed online). I think they did a nice job with it. After Mexico, we walked pretty quickly through Norway and China. One of my favorite things about World Showcase is the gift shops, which I quickly learned was not high on my SO's to do list. Once we got to Germany, it was just packed.

IMG_0670.jpg

The walk-up wait was 40 min., I'm so glad we had dining reservations. Our reservation was at 8:00 p.m., and we were seated within 5 minutes.

IMG_0671.jpg

I was honestly a little hesitant about Biergarten. The idea of eating with others didn't seem very fun, I generally dislike buffets, and I'm not that familiar with German food.

IMG_0678.jpg

Well...I loved it! It was one of my favorite meals of the entire trip. The food was great, I shouldn't have doubted Disney. We were seated with another adult couple, and then a family of four (mom, dad, two adorable kids). This was the view from our table:

IMG_0680.jpg

The ambiance was great. I think we both walked out 10 lbs. heavier. I'll have to try more of the buffets at WDW, I pretty much ignored them until we went to Biergarten.

IMG_0674.jpg

We left Biergarten and walked out to...rain. I actually love the rain (I grew up in Seattle), even at Disney. On my first trip to Disneyland in '91, it poured and I have happy memories of running around the park in our yellow Disney ponchos. :)

We decided to buy ponchos, and found a spot for Illuminations. It wasn't hard to find a viewing spot, as most people were huddling undercover far away from the lake. I managed to get some semi-decent pictures.

IMG_0691.jpg

IMG_0695.jpg

IMG_0698.jpg

IMG_0705.jpg

After Illuminations, our plan was to go back to Future World to try to ride Soarin' and Test Track. I had to stop in France first, though (it's my favorite area in Epcot). I wanted to hit the bakery, even though I was stuffed…but the line was (as always) super long. I settled for the gift shop. I was so tempted to buy one of these, but the last thing I need is more soap.

IMG_0715-1.jpg

I bought these rose and violet flavored candies instead. I bought them during at least one past trip to Epcot, but I think I buy them every time I go, so it's sort of a tradition I guess.

IMG_0905.jpg

We finished up in World Showcase, and walked back to Soarin'. Extra Magic Hours (9 p.m. to 12 a.m.) had just started. The posted wait for Soarin' was 55 minutes, which was the shortest we saw all day so we got in line. The line for Soarin' is so boring, imo. They have a game but it's still a pretty generic ride line. The actual line only took about 45 minutes, thankfully. I love Soarin' so much, it fits in nicely at Epcot.

IMG_0717.jpg

After Soarin, we wandered into Mouse Gears. My SO was looking for a Mickey Mouse watch. The one he ended up buying was a little snug (because it was so humid), but now that we’re home it fits him perfectly.

IMG_0728.jpg

I bought this t-shirt (which, by the way, is super soft).

IMG_0908.jpg

It was almost midnight, and I wanted to make sure we rode Test Track so we had to pull ourselves away from the gift shop. At about 11:55 p.m., we got in line for Test Track. The sign said 30 minutes but we walked on in less than 5 minutes (which was nice, because the line was up to 110-120 min. earlier that day). When we got to the front of the line, the CM was trying to enforce the single rider line (so a dad and his daughter couldn't sit by one another). I'm not sure the dad understood what was going on, but it was a little weird for the CM to enforce that when there was *no* line for anyone. My SO and I volunteered to sit separate, that poor little girl looked a little afraid to ride without her dad.

After Test Track, we had to leave because the park was closed :( This fountain was in Future World.

IMG_0737.jpg

We had to leave via International Gateway, so we walked by the France area all lit up at night. It was beautiful at night.

IMG_0759.jpg

While the boat was super slow taking us to Epcot, it was nice to take back at the end of the day when we just wanted to sit.

IMG_0761-1.jpg

All in all, we had a great day at Epcot. It was nice to be able to spend more than 4 hours in a Disney park in one day. ;)
