HELP! I'm flying tomorrow!

For the past couple of years (since 9/11) My Dr. prescribes Xanax for flying. It has really made a huge difference. Here's my dillemma. I'm flying in 24 hours and have NO XANAX! We just moved to Fl, and I don't have a Dr. yet. This is a last minute trip, so no opportunity to find a Dr. and get some meds.

Is there ANYTHING herbal or anything over the counter that can help relax me???? I'm already a mess!

Holly

If you have taken it before with no adverse side effects, you could try taking some today and see how you feel. Make sure you follow the directions on the label. It is an antihistamine and one of the side effects is drowsiness. At least you will get a good night's sleep. But, don't drive at your destination until the effects have worn off.

Otherwise, there are other OTC medications you could take, such as Tylenol PM. But, there are no quick fixes, and you should not start experimenting with something new before you start on a trip. Herbals, such as Clarocet, by Medicor Labs, probably take longer to have effect.

Another possibility, and probably the best one if you have extreme anxiety, is to go to the Emergency Department at Florida Hospital Celebration Health (www.celebrationhealth.com) to get a prescription from a doctor. Something like Buspar (Buspirone), which has a different mechanism from the typical benzodiazopines, or Vallium or Xanax might be prescribed. But, the only person to really get medical information from is a licensed doctor. Another thought is to go to your local pharmacy and ask the registered pharmacist for suggestions.

Have you thought of a good workout before you go to relax you? Then, perhaps use the power of positive thinking for the quick trip? Or maybe go to this web site www.fearofflyinghelp.com to take the free online course?

Good luck.

See if your old doctor will call in your prescription to your FL drug store. Do you have any renewals left? A FL drug store can probably call your old drug store and transfer it.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. Apparently, pharmacies will not accept out of state prescriptions, but if it's REALLY bad, I can refill my prescription in NH for the flight home!

I take Simply Sleep sometimes for insomnia... I think I'll try taking that. If not, I have some benedryl too. I never thought of that! I won't have to do any driving. I don't want to waste the physicicans' time at the ER in Celebration.

Maybe I'll run down to Eckerdt and ask the pharmacist for something herbal.

I appreciate your help!

NOT TRUE. Some controlled drugs require a written prescription (not phoned in) but in general out of state prescriptions are fine.
