I posted on Family Board, but realized that I should have posted here as we have different products in Canada.

We have had a rough month around here - DD6 who never gets sick has been hit hard with some type of virus. Has had 2 rounds of antibiotics, plus mono, blood, throat swab and chest xrays that all came back negative. Doc says some kind of virus that really took her out - she missed this entire week of school with fever, sore throat, extremely lethargic, a mild cough and very swollen glands in neck and armpits.

She is a very healthy girl, so after this, we are wanting to give her some probiotics to build up her good bacteria after the antibiotics. Also, we are wanting to give her and our DS2 vitamins. We aren't huge believers in vitamins as we eat well: all 4 food groups, no junk food, pop, drink water/milk and occassional juice, fresh foods, grilled meats as opposed to fried. We have done vitamins before, but not sure that they really work well?

Can anyone make recommendations for probiotics or vitamins for building up immunity during this nasty cold/flu season?

Thanks for all suggestions, Tiger

i'd be interested in this too. we are thinking of giving our kids a tablespoon of mona vie daily. right now we just do multi vitamins.....that won't enough i thinK.

I don't know either, but wanted to say that my youngest daughter, who is also 6 years old, has also been hit hard with some awful virus this past week. She has had fevers that spike and then seem to break, and then they just come back. She is lethargic, has body aches, a bit of a cough and some congestion as well as a sore throat. I haven't had her seen as it seems like a virus to me which they never can do anything for anyways. If it keeps up this week I'll have her seen though.

My other daughter has had a chesty cough with a cold. I am now fighting something off myself. I was just sick last month! I am a teacher so I am exposed to all of my first graders bugs and this year seems especially bad for them. I don't know if it is the crappy weather we've had for the summer and into the fall or what ... but a lot of people are sick right now!!!

We are going to stick with multi-vitamins and see if that helps a bit at least!

I've been going to a wellness doctor and he was saying to give my kids a multi-vitamin and then extra vitamin C.

So far (knock on wood) we've done ok. Just some simple colds.

Speak with someone at your local health food store. He/she should be able to recommend a few things that would be good for the whole family. I would suspect something with some echinacea and an antiviral, astragalus perhaps. Of course multivitamins, minerals and extra vitamin C are always good choices. Good for you for giving probiotics, ones that are kept in the fridge are the best.

If you want to get probiotics go to a place like Nature Source. The best ones are 10 billion live culture. They are kept in a refridgerator. With regard to vitamins, a multi vitamin will absolutely help you. You should also add extra vitamin C. Even if you eat well the multi vit will increase the things that even a good diet don't have enough of like the B's and D.

Consuming foods like garlic and ginger will also help but you need lots. Garlic is natures antibiotic.

The number 1 way to stay healthy is with proper and frequent hand washing. Teach your kids to slowly sing the ABC's when lathering but also teach them the correct way to completely lather their hands. Most people miss their thumbs.

Thanks for the info - my kids are the best at handwashing. They've been washing their own hands since they were babies. They wash all fingers, under nails, up to elbows. They are amazing at washing their hands, so not sure if daughter missed something, or, someone coughed on her? Doc was here last night, and said she is healing up very well.

I am going to the natural health store today and I'll see what I can find.

Thanks, Tiger :)
