A few days ago we saw a cat on our property. I ignored it.
Last night DH had garage door open a few inches and the stray comes in and rummages in the garbage. Since it is so cold and obviously starving we bring it inside and feed it.

Today -
1. call humane society (they are full)
2. Put up posters all around town - no calls yet
3. Go door to door (about 40 houses) looking for owners - no luck
4. call everyone we know looking for a potential new owner or farm referral - no luck
5. call animal rescue people

They are coming on Monday to give it some needles but won't take it away.

What should I do? I told animal recue that three members of our house our allergic to cats and two have asthma. DD has a rash on her neck from touching the cat and then her neck/face.

Believe me, I love pets (we have birds, fish and hamsters) but a cat is not a suitable pet for our family due to allergies/asthma.

Does anyone know of any farmers who would be willing to take this cat (for their barn) or any other options I may have. We went through this before and ended putting an ad in paper and offered $100 to take the cat. A farmer called and took it. That was when we had two incomes. At this point in our life I could probably only offer $25 plus cat food and litter (which we bought today).

Any suggestions???
Thank you

I have 3 kitties of my own and have been feeding a stray all winter that won't come near me except to eat. Can you at least keep it inside through the rest of the winter in the basement or laundry room to help it survive? I will e-mail someone I know that works at our local Humane Society and see if they know of any care facility in your neck of the woods. If you want to bring it all the way to Oakville ...they will not euthanize unless it's terribly antisocial and therefore not adoptable or ill...but I realize that is quite the trek!

God Bless you for taking him in though....what about a local Vet? Sometimes they will partner it with you and try to find a home?

I will let you know what I can find out.... :confused3

The girl I know at our Humane Society is not available till tomorrow... :confused3

Do you have a freecycle group in your area, I get the Hamilton emails and they often offer cats there and they go quick, just google it and see if you have one in your area.
good luck and you are saint to be doing this for a cat!

about anywhere in your area...but I did get recommended to a place in Hamilton but I know that is very far from you...here's the links? Maybe if you e-mail them they can refer you to someone in your area?? Just a thought...

Meanwhile, I will still keep trying to reach the girl I know :guilty:

Thanks so much for all the help with this.

This cat is so adorable, its a shame about the allergies/asthma in our house or we would just keep it. The kids have totally fallen in love with it. Especially DD.

This is the current situation.

A vet came to our house today to access the cat, gave it a shot and a pill.

She said the cat is in excellent physical/mental health and it will be easy to adopt it to a good family.

She is going to neuter it in the next week or two and then we can take it to a place in Lakefield (an animal rescue centre) and they will find it a home. We have been told that we could take it to Lakefield right now but we have been asked to temporary foster it until after it has been neutered. So we will keep it until then and then take it to Lakefield. Its just hard since DD is getting very attached but we can't keep it. She coughs and gets stuffed up every time she plays with it as it is.

We have set up a portion of the garage for it to live in until we can take it to Lakefield.

Thanks again for all the info.

We put up some more found posters today but the vet feels it was dropped off (we live on a dead end road).

God Bless you for taking this kitty into your heart and being so kind. Nice to know this little guys fate is safe in your hands... :grouphug:

This is soooo sad. I can't imagine just dropping off an animal. We've got 2 rescue cats and they're our babies and a big part of our family.

Thank God for people like you that will go out of their way to help out an innocent little cat. :thumbsup2

Great news:

The owner (who lives a few miles away) called and came and got the cat.
She saw one of the found flyers DD had made (which a hand drawn pic of the cat on it) and posted in town.
So that is great news. :goodvibes
I told the owner I wouldn't give the cat back to her unless she agreed to get it a collar, so hopefully she will take what I said to heart.

Thanks again to all who responded to this thread.

That's such great news! And they're very lucky to have you nearby. I only wish they'd keep their cat INSIDE!!!!!! :teeth:

A happy ending.....I wish she would keep it inside too! Kitties do not need to go outside! It's only dangerous.....You were wonderful to take it in and provide all the TLC that you did. God Bless... :grouphug:
