OT- What are your favorite children's books?

By far my DD's favorite bedtime story was Sailing Off To Sleep. As she got older I would read the "MOM" parts and she would read the "Little Girl" parts.

Here is the first part as I remember it.

It's night time little one climb into bed.
I don't want to I'll go siling instead.
There's only one problem, your ship has no sail.
Im tying my boat to the tail of a whale.
And where will you go with this lubbery beast ?
As far as I can to the Arctic at least.


She also loved anything by Mark Teague especially Sweet Dream Pie.

She really enjoyed The Magic Tree House series in 2nd - 4th grades, as well as the American Girl books (even now at 11).

Right now she is enjoying the Emily Winsnap series.

I wanted to make another suggestion. Lately my DD has been cheking out books from our library along with the same audio book. I upload the book on to her Ipod and she reads along with the story. It has heped her reading comprehension because when she gets to a word that she does't know the narrator tells her what it is and she can commit it to memory. She also grasps the plot of the story much better when she hears it.

I have to echo a few previous posters, but absolutely read The Fourteen Bears. Love, love, LOVE that book - my 7 & 3 yr old girls adore it too.

The Mrs. Piggle Wiggle series is great too.

Baby Island - SO cute. It was written in the 40's I think, but still a great book.

The Quiltmaker's Gift and the Quiltmaker's Journey are both wonderful stories.

Cindy Ellen is super cute - a western version of Cinderella. There's also a western three bears story - Dusty Locks.

You’ve gotten a lot of great suggestions of wonderful books. Some books are much more for the older range and some are definitely for the younger range. There is a WONDERFUL book that covers both (just in case you're reading to all in that age range) that I would highly suggest—Cowboy Camp by Tammi Sauer (boy or girl).

Other good books for both age groups that I don’t remember reading (I only scanned the posts) are The Magic School House series, the pigeon books (Don't Let The Pigeon Stay Up Late, The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog) by Mo Willems, The Scaredy Squirrel books by Melanie Watt, and the Duck/Cow (Duck for President, Cows that Type, etc) books by Doreen Cronin

Thank you all for the suggestions! Wow. We are going to be busy! I've already gotten a few and the kids loved them. "The Fourteen Bears in Summer and Winter was a hit.", "Something Good" was a hit too. Can't wait to read more!

I have to tell you guys, I read a book the other day to the kids. It is called, "ish". It is a wonderful book. I actually cried as I was reading it. Not boo hoo, but tears actually spilled out. It's really touching. Beautiful. Now I have to get another book by that author, "The Dot".

I'm looking for some new books to read aloud to the kids. I'm looking for the age range of 4-8 years old. What books would you recommend?

My father has always maintained that 5 is the right age for The Hobbit. My brother and I both loved it. We also got the entire Oz series, Alice In Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, all the Narnia books... those are the ones I remember.

I'm sorry...but I though she said 4-8 year old range. If I read Goodnight moon to my 6 year old, she'd commit me to a mental institution...

Part of the problem is that 4 and 8 are so different on this subject. Goodnight Moon and Chicka Chicka are still age appropriate at 4 but not 8 while Narnia and the Hobbit (great for the older kid) are not going to engage the baby.

We started reading chapter books when DS was almost 6 & DD was 3 1/2; even at 3 1/2, she listened very intently. A few chapter book series I haven't seen listed are Jigsaw Jones by James Preller, Cam Jansen by David A. Adler & My Weird School by Dan Gutman. My Weird School (Miss Daisy is Crazy, Mr. Klutz is Nuts, etc) is rather funny and uses some words we don't (such as dumbhead), but it lets us talk about our word choices & why we don't say them!!

DD just got Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg and has read 20 chapters in two days . She say's it's a really good story. Unfortunately I work nights so I'm not home to read with her in the evening. I love it when she gets hooked on a book .

Harry Potter for the older, of course!! I started reading HP to DS when he was 5, and by time he was 8 1/2, when the last book came out, we both had a copy and we read each on our own. I took 2 days to finish, he only took 2 1/2!! I really think HP started his love for reading. He'll stay up till midnight reading if I don't stop him.

We love all the "Bear" books by Karma Wilson. They are so much fun!
