About the aluminum thing- DM says that not only is this bad for your silver, but if done improperly, it will transfer the aluminum from the foil onto your silver and ruin it. Aluminum is much softer than silver and it can transfer (ever kept foil on a meat dish or lasgna too long in the fridge and seen the shiny stuff on the food?-that's the aluminum on your food).
Salt is a serious corrosive for silver as well, and that sodium bicarbonate is (drum roll, please...) just salt!!!
So in summary- very cute science experiment- not good silver cleaner.
