My DH and I are traveling to Halifax, Charlottetown and Cavendish for our 10th anniversary this summer! Our travel dates are June 30th- July 5th. We booked our tickets back in November when Westjet had their incredible deal on!

I would like some help/advice on nice (and not TOO pricey) places to stay in both Halifax and Charlottetown. We know where we want to stay in Cavendish! We will have 2 nights for Charlottetown(June 30th and July 1st) and 1 night in Halifax (July 4th). Our budget per night is $150 at the most! Also if there are any really spectacular places to eat in those cities as well we would love some recommendations!

Thanks so much for any help you can give me! :thumbsup2

Hi,

I JUST read this post and have to run, but I'm going to type out a nice long answer for you when I have more time! I'm VERY familiar with that part of the country! My siggy pics were taken in Charlottetown at Christmas time when I went to visit family :woohoo:

THANKS SO VERY MUCH! I will await your response with baited breath! I am very excited to hear about your ideas! :goodvibes

We are taking ALL OF JULY to be GYPSIES!

We will use our Southwest credit for a week away; either Sedona, Az or Florida.

Then 3 weeks on the road with tents, sleeping bags, kids and the dog. We live in Mississauga and will head east. We will be doing a RELAXING trip but hope to end up in PEI.

In Halifax your best bet would be Four Points Sheraton for less than $150. I'm thinking around $120 or less. Great rooms and location right on the harbour and within walking distance to all of downtown Halifax.

For dinner, McKelvies on Lower Water Street is great and not too pricey and an excellent pub is The Old Triangle on Prince Street. Great live celtic music at night. Top talent. All within walking distance to the Sheraton.

Are you flying into Halifax airport or Charlottetown? Just wondering why two nights in Charlottetown and one in Halifax since Halifax is much bigger. We love Cavendish too.

Have a great trip and feel free to ask more.

In Halifax with a budget of $150 it could be tight. I just looked on Expedia and they are listing Four Points Sheraton as $160 for the night of July 4. It is a nice place with a great location.

Also, there is the Haliburton which is sort of like a bed and breakfast for $185.00. Their rooms are located in Heritage Buildings the are beautiful and and have the quaint "Old Halifax" charm. I have never stayed there but did attend a conference in their meeting rooms a couple of years ago. Continental breakfast is included. If you are thinking that you might like to stay here I would call to make sure that all of the rooms have private bathrooms. I can't remember if they do. I know sharing a bathroom with another room would be a deal breaker for me.

Can't help with hotel pricing but thought I'd let you know that the International Tattoo is on that week and I know there's a performance at the Halifax Metro Centre on July 4th! A terrific show!

Yes we are flying into Halifax on the 30th. We arrive at about noon. We will rent a car at the airport and then drive to Charlottetown.

We were actually in Halifax for a week 10 yrs ago for our Honeymoon so that is why we are not spending too much time there. We tried to get flights right into Charlottetown but they were already sold out! Halifax was the closest we could get!

I have never been on PEI and my DH has not been since he was about 10 so wanted to focus the majority of our trip on the Island!

We want to see the Canada Day fireworks in Charlottetown. We want to be able to celebrate our Anniversary (July 2) in Cavendish. We are both huge Anne fans (& Road to Avonlea) so to celebrate our Anniversary there is a special treat!

Thanks for the help! I will look into the Sheraton! :thumbsup2

Yes! We actually saw the tattoo 10 yrs ago when we were on our honeymoon! It was wonderful! We were hoping to see it again but are a bit uncertain as to whether we will be able to. We are trying to figure out which stuff is most important to us!

Thanks so much for the great ideas! Keep them coming! :thumbsup2

I found the Delta Barrington to be a very nice hotel in Halifax. I haven't stayed there in several years, but I remember it being within walking distance to a lot of tourist spots.

We're heading down on jul 18 - aug 1 and have decided to stay 2 nights in durham as it's just a bit cheaper. we're going during the Tall Ships festival and most everything we looked at were "no availability" unless we wanted to go way out of our budget for it.

I will be waiting to hear what everyone is saying about PEI as we haven't chosen a place to stay there yet for one night.

We've booked a cabin in Bayfeild for a week though so we're getting there on the little details.

We also booked our flights during the fantastic seat sales but we booked with Air Canada with their 50 % off sale.

You should be ok with $150 / night for accommodations in Charlottetown (even in the summer). We stayed at the Quality Inn on the Hill in December and it was decent (clean, quiet, inexpensive $110/night). We also stayed at the Delta downtown two weeks ago, which was an excellent hotel, but in the price range of $150 in the slow season. There are many to choose from (Google Charlottetown Hotels) and it all depends on your tastes and standards.

A few of good restaurants are The Old Dublin Pub/Claddagh Oyster House downtown, St. James' Gate, and Lobster On The Wharf, and I've heard good reviews on the Gahan House Pub.

Hope the weather cooperates when you hit the Island and you have a great time.

Charlottetown has much to offer.
That is a busy week in the city though so you should look into things soon. Staying downtown should be a must, with parking, then you could walk to everything including fireworks. We go every year with our family and if you have to drive out of city that night, it is not fun. Charlottetown doesn't cater to traffic great.
You could check out the many b&b's, very popular on the island. Most are like a hotel but with breakfast.
Have a great trip.
I personally love the island, and Halifax too.

Thanks everyone for all the great ideas and advice! I knew this would be the right place to look for help! We ARE looking at B&B's for Charlottetown - not very impressed with the hotel selection at all! Keep the ideas coming please! Anyone else from the area with some ideas to throw in - I love all the ideas! :thumbsup2

I second the McKelvies dining suggestion. We usually stay at a smaller chain - cambridgesuiteshalifax but usually book closer to the date to grab a special on kings. Queens kitchettes and breakfast are currently $169.

Can second the recommendation for Cambridge Suites in Halifax. Also we really like the Prince George, well kept, nice quality touches on things like the bathrooms and the bedding.

Personally as a resident, my tastes run to the great middle eastern food you can get around town, dirt cheap. Chicken schwarma--yumm. Even better than a donair. :thumbsup2

Hey, hey, hey! Nothing is better than a donair. Nothing.

Oh how I wish I didn't have to wait until August to get my fix.

In order of importance:

1. Ravana Pizza and Donair, Portland Street, Dartmouth - THE BEST
2. Bash Toulany's Pizza and Donair, Duffus Street, Halifax - Close Second
3. Tony's Donair and Pizza, Robie Street, Halifax - Also Great

Just stay away from King of Donair. Gross.

Although you are right about Cambridge Suites and Prince George. They are fine hotels.

Anyway, where do you get the chicken shawarma?

When we lived "away" for years we craved donairs too, but now, less so. Though we did make a donair pizza at home a week or two ago with ingredient bought at the grocery store. Ah, to be back on the east coast! ;-)

There's a place kitty-corner from KoD downtown (right below the Cambridge Suites!), I think it's called "European Foods" or something. Though schwarmas are pretty easy to find. My very favourite is Ray's, in the basement food court of the Scotia Square office towers. Mostly the office lunch crowd, though when my husband really loves me he brings home take-out from Ray's for supper. Not exactly a hot-spot for visitors, though! Ray's always wins the "best falafel" in the annual people's choice awards.

Good to know. I lived in Hfx for the first 18 years of my life and still visit about twice a year. My mother was the personnel manager for Chateau Halifax (below Scotia Square) from the beginning. I used to eat there all of the time. The last meal I ate at the Scotia Square food court was at Grandma Lee's. Times have changed!

I have a quick question too (hope Northern Disney Girl does not mind).
We are spending 4 days in PEI in July too and I am thinking of taking my girls (aged 7 & 9) to one of the Anne musicals, but which one do people reccommend
1) the original Anne of Green Gables musical in Charlottetown OR
2) Anne & Gilbert musical in Summerside
I have a children's coupon enter free for the Anne & Gilbert musical which being on a budget is always a plus BUT I want to go to what the girls would enjoy more.
Any ideas.....
thanks.....
