I priced out transitions lenses (eyeglasses) for kids. The best price I found was Costco.

Just looking for opinions on whether your child has them and likes them or anything they don't like about them before I order. My ds is 5 and has been in glasses since he was 3.

I got them & then got some for my teenager. We've both been happy with them & they are so much easier than sunglasses! Only downside is that they work when you drive but your DS has awhile to worry about that ;)

I have had transition lens since I was a teenager. I have loved them. I loved not having to change my glasses when I came inside, or find sunglasses to go outside. Another point is that the transition lenses provide protection form the ultraviolet rays.

My glasses wearing kiddo is only 4 (been in glasses since he was 2) but our pediatric ophthalmologist said at his age it seems to bother kids more than help and recommended hats to keep the sun out of his eyes for now. I'm sure it depends on the kid but he is in bifocals so his glasses are expensive enough and if we paid even more for transitions and he wouldn't wear them I think I'd cry.

A couple things about transitions:
  1. They don't change inside a car. They require UV light to activate the change and the car's windows filter out the UV rays.
  2. They take several minutes to return to the colorless state. When you go inside, the lenses will be dark for a while. It can be a little bit annoying to wait for them to gradually change back.

Otherwise, I like mine but I rarely wear my glasses. I usually wear my contact lenses and plano sunglasses.

Ask his doctor first. My DS was in glasses since he was 6 months old and we asked about the lenses about 5 and his doctor said no but I really do not remember why now:confused3. That was 15 years ago so they may have changed their thinking.

If your DS's prescription changes frequently or he's just getting glasses for the first time, I would hold off on them because they are pricey. That's what we did when DS first got glasses. Now that his prescription has steadied we got him the transitions. It does take a few minutes for them to go back to clear but DS (7) never complained about them. DS's eyes are very sensitive to sunlight so it's nice to not have to worry about it when he's on the playground etc. My complainer never complains about his transitions, so I guess he likes them. Lol. Ps. When I was looking, Walmart was cheaper than Costco.

Also, if he is very light sensitive then the transitions lenses probably will not offer enough protection. They don't get very dark.
