The little girl will be 15 months old at the time of her christening. We are not really close friends but I am looking for something original and not too expensive. Do you think a build a bear would be appropriate?

We have taken to giving lovely noticeboards, which in the UK you can get, relatively inexpensively but they look lovely. I am sure the US has similar items.

http://www.pinsandribbons.co.uk/categories.asp?id=87 similar to these but I get mine from a supplier on ebay.

Although I don't think there is anything offensive in a build a bear. We got a lovely one from a friend when my first was born, she had sung twinkle twinkle little star so when you press the bears hand that is what you hear which was a nice touch.

Edited to add, I see you are from the UK anyway so most of this won't matter, let me if you want my supplier from ebay. LOL

Build A Bear would be fine...they could go and make one especially to commerate the Christening.
Though not original, savings bonds are also good. They don't have to be expensive (I think $25 gets you a $50 bond), but will be a nice value when they mature. You get a certificate for the bond (the bond is mailed at a later date) and I know I appreciate any and all savings bonds my son gets as gifts as they all go towards his college fund which is very important.

We're Catholic, and everyone gives a check or a savings bond. My Jewish friend gave my dd a toy, and was very embarrassed, although I assured her it was fine.

one of our friends gave my ds a children's first bible with a CD inside. It is super cute and I think that was our favorite gift. I can't imagine it would be too expensive. It almost looks like a children's storybook, but thicker.

Funny because we are also Catholic and with the exception of one great aunt, no one gives a savings bond. Most family & friends give a small gift and some give cash. Clothing, toys, photo frames and religious themed items were the common gifts for all three of our girls.

I like to get board books from the Catholic or Christian store. Things like Veggie Tales or other books that have good, moral based stores are great for the kids to read at bedtime or during church.

I usually give a childrens Bible or board books. There are some cute ones out there

We give a gold coin. I always figure that if they are in a pinch they can sell it.

I think the Build a Bear is a cute idea. Everyone usually gives cash. Nice and we always put it in their Universal Life Insurance Policies. However I wouldn't have had a problem if someone gave them a bear. As a parent I probably would have made it a "special bear" and only allowed it to be on a shelf or played with a special times. My oldest got a bear that sang Jesus Loves Me. She loved that bear. I even have her on video sitting at her bedroom window singing with the bear at the top of her lungs(PS the window was open so the neighbors got to listen). I think it's the thought that counts and not how much one gives or spends.

We did build a bear when DGS was baptisped at about that age. We had the recordable disk and we recorded us saying, "jesus loves you....", It is still a favorite. My mom gave him a children's bible. We are Luthern.

We usually give a few religious books (board books are especially good at that age and there are a lot of cute ones out there), some sort of religious gift to commemorate the day (a "Christening/Baptism" picture frame or cross), and if iti is someone we know well, some sort of monetary gift.

For a 15 month old, I would highly recommend books. You can usually find children's religious books at any bookstore - you don't need to go to a religious store.
