OT: Strep what?

This will sound mean, but it is effective. Hold him down on his back, hold his nose, and use the oral syringe to get the medicine as far back in his mouth as possible. He will have to swallow to breathe.

This is what they taught us at CHOP (Childrens Hosp of Phila.) when we had to give my DD caffeine when she was a few weeks old. You have to kind of shoot it back in the corner of their mouths. The stuff was terrible tasting, and she'd always try to spit it out, but this worked. Hope this helps you!

And once you have it in his mouth you may have to blow in his face to cause him to swallow. I had one child that was like that. Also, if the child can eat yogurt I would recommend giving them yogurt or at least get the acidopholus from the Vitamin section and give them that. It will help prevent a yeast infection (yes, even boys can get these and they are no fun for them as little ones) and build the good bacteria back up. My son would get yeast infections while taking antibiotics until we were told to give him yogurt while taking antibiotics. He once had a staph infection in his diaper area due to a former daycare that he lasted at for 2 days.

Wow, I am the only one who bribes my kid?:rotfl2:

My DS is 21 months old and on amox right now for an ear infection. I make a big deal out of the meds and call it "Juice" (he loves apple juice but I rarely give it to him so he thinks its a treat) I sometimes give him an extra dropper to hold. After he takes it I give him a cookie or juice. Now that he's been taking this med for a week as soon as he sees the dropper he starts asking for his cookie.

Hope your baby is better soon!

Really good advice about the yogurt. I have always wonder this and mabye you can answer. Why does the an antibiotic mixed in with yogurt and fed to a child not kill the good bacteria in the yogurt? Are there just too many of them in the yogurt? Does it not decreas the effectiveness of the antibiotics to mix it with something with active bacteria in it like yogurt? Sorry to hear about the bad daycare.

You want to separate the yogurt and anti-biotic, not mix them, because you are right, the anti-biotic will kill of the good bacteria. Actually, I discovered the hard way that just eating a lot of yogurt each day is not enough when on anti-biotics. I was on a Z-pak and got c. diff, which is a nasty intestinal infection that happens when the good bacteria in your gut is killed off by anti-biotics. I learned that a good probiotic supplement is a better choice... like culturelle or something like that. It took me 6 months to start to be able to eat normally again after having 6 diff. I still can't handle drinking regular milk from it. Serious stuff, and once you get it, you are prone to having it again. No fun, but it can be prevented just by replacing that good bacteria. :goodvibes

Please remember to not call meds food, or candy. Yes it is important that they take them BUT if they think they are a good tasting drink or food, that can be very dangerous if they come upon any medications on their own.
Bribe away, I have for sure, but do not confuse the medication with juice or food.

Oh, I am happy this works for you! I tried this approach with DD as a last resort and didn't work. I called it yummy, candy flavored, etc. And she still wouldn't take it. We have to force it down with her too since she won't even take vitamins anymore! I put the dropper ones in her juice and she knows it's in there from the taste I guess and won't drink it. I have very stubborn medicine takers!!!!!

I did get DS to sort of take his Meds yesterday by putting him in his high chair and playing rocket ship with the dropper! He didn't freak out as much but still was spitting some out. I want to thank everyone for all their awesome ideas. I have to give him his first dose for today right now, so wish me luck:)

An exboyfriends mom once told me to take acidophillis (sp?) pills whole on antibiotics available in the vitamin aisle. It works:)

The acidolpholis works great. WE have used it in the past. I yes have heard of Butt strep. We had a cousin that had it several times last year. I found out that strep can be tested from the groin area once my daughter had the swab her "middle" one time for strep. It was different but the test came back immediately. I didn't know they could do that. DD has urinary infections and kidney problems so they tested that when the bladder infection came back negative. It had to be something. Anyway, my two cents.

Flavoring for the meds is wonderful too. We did it with the liquid albuterol. That liquid albuterol tastes NASTY!! They put grape in it and she loved it. No problems. Walgreens does it.

I have a seven yr old who wont take meds if they taste nasty. She has some kind of something a few weeks ago and the doc put her on Azithromycin and she she couldnt take it. Id get it in her mouth and not 2 min later she was puking it back up. I told her if she didnt keep it down she would have to get a shot put that didnt work lol. I took her in and she got a shot of the antibiotic. I hated to do it but ya gotta do what ya gotta do :confused3

Yes, this does sound cruel, but I also had to resort to it when my kids were younger. I'll add in that I used to sit on the ground with my legs spread and the kid on the floor with his head near my crotch. This way you can hold his arms down with your legs. It is quick and very effective. This method also worked great when I had to suction stuffed noses! ;)

I too vote for some probiotics. As your child is so young, clearly capsules won't work. Our local health food store sells it in a powder form just for kids. I used to mix it in applesauce or yogurt. Works wonders!

Before going through hoops to try to get more down him, call the pharmacist to make sure they didn't account for spitting it out when dosing.

Keep things nice and dry, no cremes, give him nakey butt time.

I was going to also suggest nakie butt time.

I am not sure on that one and thank you. Today my 10 year old was also diagnosed with a staph infection in her feet caused by something in the waterprk pool at the Ramada Inn in Shepherdsville, Ky. That is one nasty place so if anyone is traveling through Ky please avoid it because the waterpark is so not worth the problems you will incur there. Anyone wanting full details is welcome to pm me.

If I give my children liquid antibiotics, they just throw up, the last few times they have needed and antibiotic my doctor has given me chewable tablets, and they are fine with the taste. Good luck.
