I know this is off-topic, but wondered if any of you have camped at Stone Mountain in Georgia?

It's been many years since I visited there but have never had the chance to camp or see any of the many new attractions they now have. We're hoping to go for the kids' Spring Break next year but would like comments from anyone with experience.

Thanks!

We are headed there in August. I will let you know how it goes.

It has been years since I have camped there. Scout leader. As I understand a lot of improvements have been made. Site are supposed to have wooded area, power, water, etc. Special discount tickets and nice views. There is so much to do at Stone Mountain and the Mountain itself is a Wonder. Hope you enjoy yourself in my home. ( I grew up in Stone Mountain 60-70's).

I camped at Stone Mountain in May of this year. We live in Georgia and have gone to Stone Mountain many times, but never camped there. To be honest with you, we were not impressed with it at all and will probably not camp there again. All of the sites are very close together so you do not have much privacy. I know a lot of sites are like that, but these were closer than normal. There is a lot to do there though throughout the park. If you don't mind your neighbors being right on top of you, go ahead and have a great time! :rotfl:

Oh no, now this depresses me. I don't mind so much being near others, because we're either inside or gone most of the time. Is it wooded in any way, between the sites, near the sites, etc.?

Having camped at Fort Wilderness, I have such a hard time comparing other campgrounds to it. We were at Tropical Palms in Kissimmee this weekend and I wasn't impressed AT ALL.

We camped there last summer- the water and electric areas are a lot better than the areas with full hook-ups. In particular I would recommend the loops on the left side of the campground ( if your looking at a map). They are larger and farther apart and have more shade. The loop in the middle around the pool is very tight- probably the worst area. You do get some good ticket prices in the campground. Last year they offered a 2 days for the price of one that you could only buy if you were staying in the campground.

This is good to know! Thanks. I do have a map, just got it in the mail on Saturday. I'll keep it in mind! Yeah, they currently have a family package that is for 4 people for unlimited access to the attractions. Kind of like an annual pass, I'd guess. It's not priced high and I think would work since we'll be there for more than a week.

Unfortunatley, I have to have a full hook-up, so I guess I'll have to be in close quarters with my neighbors! :confused3

I do know that all travel trailers and RV's are on the right side, which is where everyone is very close together. (this is the full hook-up site). All pop-ups & tents are on the other side of the grounds. It is wooded, but not in between each site. the sites on the lake are a little bit nicer.
Go and have a good time, like I said there is a lot to do there. and make sure you check out the laser show.
I was not trying to be a "debbie downer", just wanted to let you know that the sites are close together. IMO. But, if you have good neighbors, it's not such a bad thing. :)

We went about two summers ago and had a GREAT time. We were in a pop-up and our site was to the "left" when entering the campground. Had a nice site on a bluff overlooking the lake.

We purchased wristbands at the campground which allowed you to visit all the attractions as much as you wanted for a day...but since we were camping there, we got either an extra day or 1/2 day free.

Be sure to go to the little water slides in the park. There's not many slides, but they were very fun, with no lines. Our kids conquered their fear of water slides here.

Love the atmosphere on the Great Lawn before the Laser Show. Be sure to picnic there in the evenings.

There really is a lot to do in the park now. There is the Crossroads area, which is nicely themed ala Dollywood or Frontierland, antique car museum, train ride, cable car ride, Plantation (don't miss), miniature golf, water slides, hike up/down the mountain...

You'll have a great time!

Michelle, first off...howdy from Viera!

My wife and I took our youth group (from Rockledge) to Stone Mountain a few summers ago. Overall, it was pretty good...until the second to last night. The short story is that the Allman Brothers were in town, and many of their fans decided to stay at the campground. What a nightmare! Hundreds of hippies running around all night...we actually were really scared! Several were bold enough to go through our coolers and come right up to our tents, almost challenging us to come out and "party" with them (this was very late at night). Also, we had a really great site right on the water, and several more younger people stole the boat that was at the dock and took it for a joyride. Several calls to security did nothing--they were absolutely useless and I seriously considered calling the police themselves until most of this gang had become too drunk to continue and finally went to sleep (around 5:30 or 6am). As soon as the sun was up, we were outta there. I (along with other guests) complained loudly at check-out, but were told there was nothing they could do. I thought at the very least a refund of that night's camp fee was in order. It was a beautiful place, and we really enjoyed climbing the mountain and the fireworks, but that night really, really was bad. I thought the staff should have used much better judgement in who they allowed into a "family" park and that their idea of security was a complete joke.

Just my two cents. Probably was a very isolated incident...but the park's lack of concern was really alarming to me. You'll more than likely have a great time!! :sunny:

Howdy neighbor!

What a terrible thing that was! One of my very first camping trips, as a child, something very similar happened, Two grown men from across the "road" decided to start drinking around the campfire and then began fighting with each other. They fought all through their site, others' sites, the restorooms, and back out. The next morning we found out they were brothers. :sad2:

Mu husband and I were talking about Stone Mountain again tonight and I think we're going to do it. Unless I find something similar (with lots to do!) b/t now and January. We aren't going until March anyway.

We are going in a couple of weeks. We also went last August for the first time. We really liked it. We bought our all-day tickets from the campground -- you get two days for the price of one.

When we go, we also go to Six Flags over Georgia -- not a bad drive from Stone Mountain.

Where are the water slides? I don't recall seeing any when we were there last year. Please tell me more! :wave2:

We live within 20 minutes of Stone Mountain so we go atleast 3 times a year. We always have a great experience. If you need full hook-up go ahead and get a spot around the pool /play area and you will be close to everything. They have a boat taxi that takes you over to the marina and from there you can walk or take a tram over to the mountain for the laser show. Crossroads will be included in your 4 person ticket price and the kids will love it. They have an indoor play area that shoots balls and an obstacle course to go thru. Then outside they have a treehouse obstacle course....one side for girls the other for boys. We always enjoy it!!!!!!!!!!!!! Any other questions you are welcome to PM me.

You pass the waterslide/beach complex on the way to the campground.

They had 4 slides...two "open" and two enclosed. All slides used inner tubes.
Our kids had a blast here...was not crowded...parts of the slides are shaded by trees....nice place to cool off.

Waterslide Complex

Located on the opposite side of the lake from the other attractions, adjacent to the Golf Course Clubhouse, the complex includes four waterslides. Two intertube slides and two enclosed body flume slides. The sand beach area is open for sunbathing, but the lake is closed to swimming.

I didn't even think of this! Since I've always lived in FL, it doesn't cross my mind that attractions "close for the season!" We'll be there the last week of March. How's the weather there at that time anyway?

Usually cold.....40's I guess mid day. It is hard to recall. Any other Georgian's out there in the Atlanta area remember?? I think it is usually colder here closer to Feb than in Dec/Jan.
