Sorry for the sort of OT post, but we were looking to find the name of the state park campground that I've seen mentioned on this board before. I tried searching the forums, but it was not coming up. Must have been mentioned by name.

Daddy's little girl asked today if we could spend one night at the beach on the way down to Disney in August and I remember some posts on this board about a Florida State Park CG that came highly recommended.

I aim to please, and we are now considering taking off the night before we initially planned to go and spending one more night on the road.

I believe it was in St Augustine...dont remember the name either though

If you are travelling along the Florida panhandle (I-10), then there is a nice state park near Destin called Topsail Hill. There is also another one near Panama City called St. Andrews. Check out the Florida State parks website.

Thanks for the quick replies - looks like Anastasia Campground in St. Augustine is one nice place BDR! Just a short ride on the bikes to the beach, has electricity and water for $24/night sounds good.

I should have mentioned, we'll most likely be coming down 95 south at this point (although we travelled through central Florida on the way home in 2003 and really enjoyed the horse farms and scenery along the secondary roads from Ocala up to Jacksonville (edited, had written St. Pete, but meant the JAX area).

Now, a little further north is Hunting Island State Park in SC. A GREAT campground on the beach!!!

Anastasia State park is good and from what I'm told will give you the most privacy at your site provided by nature. There is a KOA in St. Agustine about a mile south of Anastasia state park that isn't too bad. As you continue south there is Ocean Grove RV park that has just undergone some renovations, this one is located close to a couple of restaurants and shopping centers.Just a little south of that is Bryn Mawr campground. This oneis the closest to the beach ( there is a walkway to the ocean in the park ).There is also a campground just north of St. Augustine called North beach camping resort. All of these campgrounds are a bike ride to the ocean or just a walk. The KOA is the fathest from the ocean and I don't think it is any farther than from outpost to settlement ( probably less ). All of these except North beach are within 5-6 miles of each other. I don't know the prices but, I believe they all have some kind of website.I know you asked about state parks but, I figured the extra info couldn't hurt. I know people that have stayed at Northbeach,KOA,Bryn Mawr and Anastasia and have never heard any bad reports. I can walk to Bryn Mawr from the house and I can't bring myself to camp someplace that I can ride a bike home to get something:lmao:, I could just stay in the front yard.:confused3 ..If one is booked up I figured the extra info could be helpful.
Drive time to the fort depending on traffic speed etc. is about 2 hrs. This is only a ballpark.

We have friends in Jacksonville Beach and have stayed in Hanna Park to visit them on our way to disney. Its a nice campground and we could walk to the beach from our site. St Augustine may offer more to do though.

Thanks for the info - we ended up booking two nights at Hunting Island (two nights needed to make a reservation) but it looks like a great location. Just hope there are no hurricanes coming through this August! We were pretty torn between the Hunting Island location and the Anastasia in St. Augustine. Both looked great, with plenty of shade trees and large sites.

However, Nancy has always wanted to visit Savannah and we figure we could go there during the day, go back to the CG and walk the beach at night, and then get an early start south to the Fort and try to check in for noon.

Maybe we'll hit Anastasia on the way out, get a relaxing night on the beach to wind down after a hectic stay in WDW. I can't wait. Still have a yard covered with snow and temps just barely made it up to the low 40s today. Snow should be gone this week, I hope.
