How do I figure out Sq/Ft? seems like everything in my kitchen remodel is sq. ft, counter, backsplash, tile floor!! Thanks!!

It's square feet. Simple formula - length times width (in feet)

Example - backsplash 18" high and 10 feet long on one length of the counter and 18" high and 4 feet long on the other:

18 inches = 1.5 ft
1.5x(10+4)= square feet
1.5X14=
21 square feet

Don't forget you measurements should be accurate if you are ordering anything; and you always need to account for more if doing tile or flooring due to cuts of pieces.

How funny. I'm a high school geometry teacher. Right this minute I'm in study hall (hence the Disboards) but 10 minutes ago I was covering this exact topic with my kids.

Each square foot contains 144 square inches.

Take the number of square inches, and divide by 144 to get the square feet... then remember to round UP so you buy enough.

So if the region is 54 inches by 96 inches, multiply 54 x 96, That gives you 5184 square inches. Divide by 144 and it's 36 square feet.

YIKES! I feel so stupid! say for example the room is 12ft x 12ft and the tile is $6.80sq How much would that come to? Once I see an example I hopefully will be able to apply it to the rest.

Often times, it is not that simple. For instance, if the room has cabinets in it, then the area that those cabinets cover will not be tiled and should not be included in square footage as it applies to tile.

If it is a square 12 x 12 room with nothing to cut around or cabinets as the last person stated, it is 144 square feet.

Take the length and width measurements in feet and multiply:

12 ft x 12 ft = 144 square feet

Multiply the square footage by the cost per square foot:

144 sf x $6.80/sq ft = $979.20

Always keep your measurements consistent -- use the same units (feet, inches, etc). You can't mix them up.

When dealing with building materials, notably tile, you have to make allowance for unusable scrap when the floor dimensions do not come out to an exact number of tiles and you have to cut some to fit. This calculation is "unscientific", some tile makers give an arbitrary fudge factor such as "order ten percent more".

Recently I did an insulating subfloor where I did a "sceintific" calculation of how many pieces would be needed. Because this would be covered with a (more attractive) finish layer, I could stagger the joints/seams in an uncanny fashion to make better use of "scraps".
