OT: School Lunch Issue

Short and sweet:

  1. The school has an obligation to inform parents of the program, and parents should have to opt-in.
  2. Children who charge against their parents wishes should be expected to work off their debt for their parents (or it should come out of the allowance if they receive one).

I'm sorry I have to disagree you can't opt out of charging privileges in our school anyways, also you can't make a child work off a debt. Schools should just not allow snacks or extra lunchs to be charged. One lunch only should be allowed to be charged thats it no snacks or extra lunchs. If they have extra money then fine they should be allowed to buy something else. A child will not be hungry eating one school lunch. I have tried to change the rules in our school district without any success. Alot of children mine included are having weight issues I believe partly due to extra snacks and lunchs.

That parents can't opt-out is idiotic... I would've thought that would be illegal. Minors can't have credit cards, so to expect parents to pay for charges their kids make without their permission shouldn't be enforceable. What I mean by having the child work off the debt is to do extra house/yard work to make up for their irresponsibility; not literally get a job and pay the parents back.

Yes, I had to get a note from a doctor to stop the charging.

I realize OP was talking about an older child my dd was only 5 what chores would I have had her do?

If you have a yard, they would be out picking up sticks and rocks and pulling weeds.

If you don't have a yard, they would be gathering the family recycling and helping to clip coupons.

There are all kinds of chores 5 year olds can do. Most can help with all the household chores at some level. They can set and clear the table. Gather the trash, match socks just to name a few.

I could see a 5 year old doing a few chores- maybe feeding the cats/dogs with your supervision, that sort of thing. BUT a 5 year old's mind, in my opinion, is vastly different from an 11 year old and the punishment has to fit the age level too. A 5 year old still thinks Mommy puts the ATM card in the bank and Mommy gets free money! An 11 year old sees Mommy deposit a check in the bank, discuss how much money they have, and knows that money isn't exactly free.

(Although they still believe we have a tree in our backyard, I think!)

That is so true :) . My 6 year old just yesterday said but you can get money from your card.

I'm sorry but I can't imagine actually punishing her for something she doesn't even understand. But thank you for those suggestions :).

When I was little, I used to gather sticks and rake leaves from the backyard to help my parents. I never even considered it a punishment.
