OT--read aloud book for 1st graders

When I go in to read to my DD's class, I have my DD pick her favorite books for me to read.

Well, today is Dr. Suess's birthday!
Kids love the sing-songy rhythm and made-up words of these books.

I was just going to say Dr Seuss..It is HIS birthday and lots of schools read his books all month

Miss Nelson is Missing...I forget the author. If you have a cooperative/fun-loving teacher, you could have her (or him!) sneak out of the classroom long enough to dress up as Miss Viola Swamp.

We did it last year in my son's kindergarten class and they went nutty , and not in a good way. (There were some behavorial issues in the class, and breaking with the routine was too much for them.) So I think a first grade classroom might be even better.

Good luck, have fun!

I suggest Don't Call Me Pig! by Conrad J. Storad. It won the Judy Goddard Award from the Arizona Library Association.

It is the tale of a Collared Peccary, called a Javelina in Spanish. It is written in rhyme, has wonderful illustrations, and is educational.

Little ones just love to join in and shout out, "Don't Ever Call Me Pig."

Here is a sample of the writing:

When danger's near, I stand my ground
My safety does not matter
A loud grunt signals to my herd
"In all direcitons. . . .SCATTER!"

My skinny legs have just three toes
It's my head that grows quite big
But if you want to keep me happy
Don't ever call me pig!

Colorful, catchy, and cute it is a perfect read for young scholars!

I recommend We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen. The kids will love to act it out as you read.

I'm such a book dork, I thought of another one (actually a series): Skippyjon Jones. There are 3 or 4 of them. They are about a cat who thinks he is a chihuahua, and all of his imaginary adventures.

We love Click, Clack, Moo- Cows that Type by Doreen Cronin and Wild About Books by Judy Sierra. DD also love Stellaluna at that age. I love kids' books!

I just read Bear Feels Sick to my son's 1st grade class. It's a cute book about a bear whose little animal friends help him when he's sick. It's a big picture book so all the kids can see it.

Any books by Robert Munsch are wonderful!

Stephanie's Ponytail
Mmmmm, Cookies!
Alligator Baby
and many, many more.

I brought a collection of Curious George stories for my son's class and read about 3 of them to the class. The kids really enjoyed it! :thumbsup2

Julianne Moore's "Freckleface Strawberry" books are a lot of fun, and have great pictures too. My first grader loves them (and loves that she can also read them herself).

My son is a first grader and he and his class LOVE the Junie B. Jones books. We bought a big set for him because his teacher reads the books to his class.

The only problem with Junie B. is that they are chapter books & I figure you are probably wanting a picture book that can be shared in one sitting.

I am so glad that you said you "get" to do this, rather than "have" to do it! :thumbsup2

I read SkippyJohn Jones to DD's class when she was in first and they LOVED it. It was great!

Thanks so much for all the suggestions. There are some that I have never heard of that we will have to check out. I have a cat in the hat hat so I may read some Dr. Seuss and wear that. It is not til the end of the month so I still have some time to think about it.

I only get to read once a year and that is only for K and 1st grade so this will be my last time reading to either of my dd's classes. They are getting to big for me too fast. I want to go out with a bang!

First grade teacher here--our hands down favorite for several years now are the "Pigeon" books by Mo Willems. The first one is "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus" and it's great for getting kids to use expression in their reading. It's about a pigeon who wants the kids you are reading to, to let him drive the bus while the bus driver is away. The pigeon begs and pleads and gets angry (and Mo Willems uses great illustrations to convey his meaning!) and then moves on to bigger dreams at the end. There's a whole series of them now about the pigeon wanting a hot dog, not wanting to go to bed...sounds silly but I can't say enough good things about them and I always give them as gifts now, too.
