OT--read aloud book for 1st graders

First grade teacher here--our hands down favorite for several years now are the "Pigeon" books by Mo Willems. The first one is "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus" and it's great for getting kids to use expression in their reading. It's about a pigeon who wants the kids you are reading to, to let him drive the bus while the bus driver is away. The pigeon begs and pleads and gets angry (and Mo Willems uses great illustrations to convey his meaning!) and then moves on to bigger dreams at the end. There's a whole series of them now about the pigeon wanting a hot dog, not wanting to go to bed...sounds silly but I can't say enough good things about them and I always give them as gifts now, too.

My daughter loves these books. I may have to read one of them.
Thanks

Mom of a first grader here-- Totally agree, these books make ME laugh out loud. "Don't let the pigeon stay up late!" is one of my son's favorites. You can really ham it up while you read, too. My son has a blast now that he can read so he hams it up for his little sister. Have fun! :goodvibes

My kids like Duck on a Bike, it's really fun to read with different animal "voices".
We also like Click Clack Moo-Cows That Type like a PP suggested.

Last year I read Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst to my dd's 1st grade class and it was a HUGE hit. The kids loved chanting along with the book and it was just the right length for a read aloud.

Big Dog, Little Dog by Dav Pilkey. Great short stories and illustrations. This is still one of DD favorites.

There are so many great choices...

My kids & I love William Steig. The Amazing Bone is our favorite. We like Dr. De Soto a lot too.

Some other favorites for that age group are Hooway for Wodney Wat by Helen Lester, Diary of a Worm by Doreen Cronin, Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathmann, and Dear Mrs. La Rue by Mark Teague.

And since we're on the subject of reading to kids, does anybody have suggestions for something to read to 5th graders?

5th graders will probably like Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume. It is the first book in the Fudge Book Series. It is 120 pages long, so it will take a while to read.

for the 5th graders:
Harry Potter, the Percy Jasckson series, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe series, The Black Cauldron series, The Hobbit

If you can do a really good persnickety voice of a cat, check out "My Big Dog." I read it to my dd's first grade and they LOVED it.

Me, back again, I thought of two more: Dogzilla and Kat Kong by Dav Pilkey. Spoofs on Godzilla and King Kong, with dogs and cats as the "monsters". He has a wonderfully silly sensibility that I just love. (Except for Captain Underpants, which are incredibly tasteless...but fun for silly little boys like my DS!)

Another one of my kids' favorites is The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs
by Jon Scieszka.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, I'll only have about 15 min to read to them. I need to find a short story or maybe a book that has a really interesting first chapter. :confused3 This was so much easier when they were in the younger grades!

Last year I read John, Paul, George & Ben to my ds's 1st grade class at the request of my ds. The kids LOVED it and the teacher who usually sits in the corner trying to get stuff done even payed attention as I read aloud. It was a lot of fun as I went through and kids jumped in participating with little facts they knew already about the founding fathers.

Any books by Robert Munsch are wonderful!

Stephanie's Ponytail
Mmmmm, Cookies!
Alligator Baby
and many, many more.

Last time it was "Thomas' Snowsuit" and "Something Good" (my all time favorite childrens book) Kids were laughing like crazy.

Definitely check out his books if you haven't already.. you probably are familiar with "Love you Forever".. but he has a ton of really funny stuff.
