I know this isn't the board for this but I wanted to share this with everyone. We have a homeless and feral cat problem in our neighborhood and a stray kitten adopted our family a few months ago. By the time we got her to the vet she was already pregnant.
She had 4 kittens and has rejected them all- she is actually trying to kill them. The vet said when kittens have kittens they often lack the maternal instinct.
Of the 4 kittens only 1 has survived-we call him Trooper and are prepared for the worst but hoping for the best. We are hand feeding it and when possible having her nurse from Momma (it takes one person to hold mamma down and another to protect kitten.) We are doing everything the vet has recommended and now we are just trying to stay positive.
Just a reminder for everyone
PLEASE SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS

:sunny: My thoughts are with you. I hope all goes will with the surviving one.

Bless your heart for taking on a challenge. I echo your "Please spay and neuter your pets'. I am not a PETA person just a animal lover. Thank you for taking on an unwanted cat and her kitten.
Even good old barn cats get more attention from humans than feral ones.

God bless you for taking on this challenge!

'Trooper' is such an appropriate name! All my best to you in this! Keep us posted.

From one animal lover to the next - God bless and good luck to you and little Trooper.

God Bless and good luck with the new little one. I can't agree with you more. Spaying and Neutering is the way to go.
And please don't get a dog or cat or other pet as a surprise gift for anyone. Remeber pets are not jsut for a holiday but a lifetiem commitment.
I too have a feral cat problem in my neighborhood. There is one cat who has 2-3 litters/year. Usually just one or 2 kittens but they never seem to survive to adulthood because of disease or getting hit by a car. It is truly a shame. :wave2:

Spay, neuter, keep ALL pets indoors or on a leash. Never understood why people don't. So many unwanted animals and car-flattened ones. My best for little Trooper.

Prayers and pixie dust little Trooper. Yes, spay and neuter!!! It can't be said enough. There are way too many unwanted furry creatures out there now.

What they all said! P & PD for you and little Trooper.

We had just the opposite happen here. We took in a stray cat with a litter of her own. Then about 10 days later, a neighbor brought us a stray kitten she found walking down the middle of the street!

After some breath holding, the mother cat adopted the kitten as her own. It was really something to see.

Buddy, the kitten at the top, is quite a bit larger than the 3 little ones below. We kept buddy, who wasn't expected to live because of a chest malformation, and he's a healthy and happy cat.

Good luck to you and your newest family addition. It's so kind of you to take on the challenge, and I hope that little Trooper hangs in there. I, too, am a big supporter of spaying and neutering. We have three cats right now: one is the kitten of a feral that a friend took in, one was adopted from a shelter, and one was rescued by my brother at a truckyard where the workers were going to kill it for fun. I don't know what gets into people; nice to know there are good people out there, too.

Sending PD your way. That is how I got 2 of my babies. A stray cat had a liter of kittens in my brother's garage and his dog killed the mother cat. They couldn't have been more than a day old. We adopted 3 of the 6. One of them didn't make it through the first night because she wouldn't eat. We bottled feed the other two. It was a lot of work but well worth it. They are the nicest, most trusting cats you could have (they will be 3 years old next month). My vet's office was very helpful as well. They told me that kittens are very hardy animals if you do 3 things: keep them warm (we used a heating pad), feed them special formula for kittens, and you also have to make them go to the bathroom (we rubbed their bottoms with a wet cotten ball). If you have any questions, I will be glad to answer them for you. Good Luck!!

Diane

Prayers and pixie dust coming your way! I have bottle feed many kittens and it can be tough, but very rewarding. Not all have made it, but we did the best we could. Without you this little "Trooper" wouldn't have a chance. You are giving him that second chance. Good luck and God bless!

Thanks for all the warm wishes but sadly Trooper didn't make it. He became very lethargic last night and wouldn't eat and went to sleep peaceful and warm and slipped away.
I am okay knowing that he didn't go because of a lack of trying on our part but my heart is a little broken.
My kids are learning a big lesson. That is the hardest part seeing them learn this sad reality of nature.
BTW- we were doing a combination of nursing and bottle feeding. We were feeding it kitten formula from the vet. It was intensive care for 3 days- the little thing even needed help voiding its bladder, etc.. Very sad. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

Roberta- thanks for sharing this- it is precious. You managed to lift my spirits a bit with this happing ending story.

Cheap Mom -

I am sorry for your loss. You gave all you had to Trooper.

Denae

I'm so sorry Cheap Mom. At least Trooper knew warmth and love for a little while and that's a good thing.
