We have an old computer monitor just sitting in the basement, probably 5 years old at least. Is it worth putting in on Craigs List for FREE - think anybody would want it? If not, how do I dispose of it? Don't they have to be taken to a specail hazard type place?

You are correct, you really can't dispose of that type of stuff with regular trash. A couple things I can think of
- Some communities will have a special day where you can bring odd things to dispose of: electronics, paint, chemicals, etc.
- Check to see if your community has a computer "recycling" company; we have one in town and you can just bring it to them and they'll take off your hands; they can break everything down and some parts can be recycled into new things
- I would say get rid of it via CraigsList, but if it's 5 years old, it may not be very desirable....but you never know! Monitors are not that expensive, plus the norm are the flat panels (assuming that yours is probably not flat panel!)

Good luck!

The salvation army took ours just a couple of weeks ago.

We did the same thing with our monitor. It worked just fine so we dropped it off at the Salvation Army Store and they put it up for sale.

Otherwise, there are companies that will pick-up tv's and monitors. We called one that our town recommended and for $25 they came to the house and picked up our dead tv for proper disposal.

If it is a large CRT monitor, then try one of the PPs suggestion as you most likely will not be able to give it away on Craig's List. No one wants the CRTs anymore because of their size and weight.
