My family has decided to rent a house for a week in the Outer Banks. The house we like the best is in Kitty Hawk. Please tell me about the area. I am looking for some family friendly things to do there. It will be me, dh, ds6, ds4, my dad, my mom, my sister (20), and my grandpa. Any suggestions will be great!!

Thanks for your help!!

Besides the beach, there are a number of golf courses and miniature golf courses. There is a movie theater in Kill Devil Hills and a bowling alley in KDH too. Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head all kind of roll into each other. You wouldn't know you left one town and entered the next without seeing the town sign. There a lot of shops with some decent shopping and a large number of restaurants. There are all kinds of water activities....fishing, kite boarding, and jet skis. It is a relaxing place to vacation.

The Outer Banks are very relaxing! It's definately not a "Get up and Go" type of vacation. Whichever town you choose, you will be happy!

We love OBX!

Don't miss the dunes at Jockey Ridge. It's like you're on another planet.

The Wright Brothers museum is right there, but check ahead before you go -- I seem to remember it being kinda pricey, but I might be wrong.

I agree with PP -- OBX are definitely a kick back and relax kind of place.

Enjoy!

We are lucky that my dad still lives there (I did too for a while!) - we usually just hang out at the beach.

We recently played laser tag there at Destination Fun. It was a really neat set - it was like a 2 story ship. Don't waste the money on the 3d golf. It's neat for a few minutes but then it's all the same and the adults got head aches. In laser tag, my 7 yr old got scared a few times when she couldn't find anyone (we had the place to ourselves!) so might be fun for the 20 yr old but wouldn't recommend for the 4 and 6 yr old.

In Manteo, you can go to a really nice aquarium - great for all the ages in your group and they have pirate boat rides for kids somewhere in Manteo now too. They go out on a treasure hunt. Also in Manteo, you can go on a dolphin tour - might be better for the whole group.

Make sure to eat at Black Pelican at least once! Pick up a Sunny Day book for coupons to lots of places/activities. You'll see them every where.

Our favorite putt putt is at the 6 MP - treasure golf I think? - you take a little train ride to the top of the course.

If you go up north to Corolla, you can look for wild horses.

Have fun!

We live about 2 hours from Kitty Hawk, but last year was DS first trip because we are always going out of state!

If you think your kids are old enough, check out The Lost Colony. It's an outdoor drama and really good, don't know if it would hold the attention of really young kids though.

We also did the aquarium and Jockey's Ridge. There's the Wright Brother's Memorial and lots of mini golf. If you can swing it, about an hours north in Corolla is a place where you can drive jeeps on the beach and see wild horses.

There might be some deep sea fishing charters or boat/jet ski rental or something too.

We love to go to the aquarium in Manteo and The Lost Colony as well. Kids love Jockey's ridge, it used to be the location of a mini golf as well. Wright brothers is a huge hit as well.
The horses where relocated in to the 4 wheel drive only area. If you have 4 wheel drive you can go see them. There are also tours. The Lighthouses can be a lot of fun to explore.
If you like to shop there are outlets.

Have fun!

Kill Devil Hills ... Awful Arthur's restaurant. It's right on the beach and across from a lovely pier. So yummy that our DD gave up a 12 year vegetarian diet! O.K., she now eats fish, and still not meat, but that's how good the seafood is. We enjoyed the Wright Brothers Museum, too.

Everything already mentioned + if you don't mind the drive - head down Cape Hatteras Seashore and take the Ferry to Ocracoke. We love to do that! Haven't been in a few years, but we love that area. It's definitely a relaxing vacation!
