At the place my kids do their OT and Speech there's a little boy a couple months older than my Sammy. (He's about to turn 7) Anyways he invited both my boys to his party (at Chuck E Cheeses). This little guy has a variety of issues. His cognitive level is at or above his age level. he's in the 1st grade and is academically on target.
He doesn't talk well, he has little fine motor skill and his gross motor skills are pretty low too. He doesn' walk without a device to help, he spends most of his time in a power chair. (I think he may have MS I'm not sure, I've never asked what his diagnosis is.) I do know he's a bright and friendly child with a smile on his face.
Anywhoo, ya'll are among the first when I need advice on thing special needs.
I asked his Mom what he might like and she said she really didn't know what to get him... he doesn't like Power Rangers much or stuff like that.
I need something I know he can use, since his motor skills kinda suck i don't want to get him something he can't manipulate... any ideas out there???

Sure--here is a list that might work: one of those light up, big balls that look like something out of the ocean (I saw them at Wal-Mart and KB toys), one of the rectangle things that have the "pins" in them that you can put your face, hands, toys, etc on and it makes the shape on it (not sure of the name, but again, Wal-Mart has them--they are really cool), a spinny WDW light, a cool themed sheet set, a book that he might like, FLOAM (this would be good to help his fine motor also, but it is fun and doesn't require a lot of great fine motor skills to just play with), a portableCD player (one of the cheap ones--$9.97, at Wal-Mart), stickers and sticker book...I will see if I can think of any more...

Books on CD would be my first suggestion. Even if they're 's on target academically, a bright first grader generally enjoys books on a higher level than he can read. My DS (about to turn 7) particularly enjoys things that are funny.

Another suggestion for fun things that are really sensory and work well with all sorts of abilities is Stevespanglerscience.com. I just put together a gift basket for an 8 year old birthday with stuff for making "worms" and a few other thing.
