:offtopic: I know this isn't budget related, sorry, but I need some creative minds. My DS is in a feller's cake baking contest for cub scouts, that means he and DH have to make the cake without any help. They won an award for theirs last year, the theme was something like cub scouts of the future so they made a moon cake with cub scouts camping on it.

DH might not be here this year so I may have to help some. This year is a Hawaiian theme. I've found a few online, but the problem is that alot of the people in his den get their ideas online, too, we saw a couple of familyfun cake ideas last year, so we're trying to be original. The other thing is that he would like to tie it in to scouting somehow, but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to make scouts, everything on the cake has to be edible. He likes the idea of making a big cake to look like water with waves and a scout surfing, but I can't figure out how to do it. Any ideas?:beach:

They ended up doing a tiki hut on a beach with boy scouts camping outside of it. We made a mini volcano in the corner. DH had some issues frosting the water so we didn't end up with any surfers like DS wanted, just a boat. It's kind of hard to tell from the pics, but the red things are a beach umbrella made with a vanilla wafer covered with fruit leather and a pretzel stick with a red beach blanket underneath it.

Brings back memeories of DH and DS...
The first thing I thought of was a volcano...
I'll put some thought into it, remember things like rice krispie treats are great for making buiildings, gummy candies can be cut into amazing shapes and hold up well, what are those cookies that are surf board shaped...Manilos? Something like that...sounds fun!

Go to Michael's or WalMart and get marzipan/almond paste. You can make cool Tikis out of it.

Also, get the liquid cake decorating colors. A little goes a long way. Mix with water, brush onto the tikis and blend the colors to make it look aged or even slightly faded/burned.

Use the blue on the icing, and white on the tips like seafoam. Hawaiian water is less blue than bright turquoise. Don't forget Diamond Head!

Can he make a bunch of cupcakes and frost them together, into the shape of Oahu?

I think everyone and their cousin will be doing a volcano or surfing. Make the cake look like 'Iolani Palace. Now, THAT would impress me.

I immediately thought of a volcano as well so that might be too overused.

How about a bunch of cupcakes to resemble a lei? You could take a picture of your son in his uniform, blow it up and create a tray out of it and place the cupcakes around his neck for the appearance of a lei. I know the picture isn't edible, but 'technically' it isn't part of the cake! Let us know what you decide. We are doing a hawaiian theme for my son's birthday and I would love some fun ideas.

Maybe check out a Jimmy Buffett fan website. Those tailgaters are crazy and creative!

hmm, I immediately thought of a giant pineapple. I'm no baker, so I have no idea how to make it, but a pineapple cake might be fun, but I definitely like the volcano idea with the goodies inside.

Oooh, I have some ideas:

A pineapple cake--piece of cake, actually. A girlfriend made her son a super cool Spongebob Cake, and one part of it was his Pineapple house. Bake two pound cakes in loaf pans, ice them together standing on end, and then you can 'carve' the pineapple shape.

How about a Hawaiian Shirt cake? Bake a sheet cake, cut out the shape of a shirt, and 'frost' it with fondant (super smooth) for the shirt, and the big loud, brightly colored Hibiscus flowers?

Do a variation on a 'Pot of Dirt' (cake and pudding dessert) and do a Can of Kona Coffee? Bake several smal round cakes (like 4 or 5) stack them on top of each other. Frost or Fondant to make it look like a coffee can, and then top it with Chocolate covered peanuts, or raisins, or even coffee beans).

I knew everyone here would have some great ideas! Yeah, we thought of the volcano, too, but I think it will be overused. The lei idea would be cute, so would the tikis, I'll have to run those past ds. Oh, and I hadn't even thought about rice krispy treats to decorate with, that could really be useful.

I just told him about it, he likes the tikis, says the lei is too girlie:rolleyes: . Thanks for the ideas so far, I'm open to more suggestions!

Oooh, I love these! I'm not a baker by any means, would a flower pattern be difficult to make? I'm thinking if he did this he could "draw" a cub scout patch on it somewhere, too.

He might go for the pineapple instead because of the spongebob tie-in, but we could do that.

It would not be hard at all. Think of fondant as edible clay. That's basically what it is. It comes in white or chocolate, and you can dye it to whatever color. (the white kind, chocolate probably would not dye well :rotfl: ) Roll it out nice and thin, and drape over the shirt. Smooth it out, cut the collar, use a small tube of icing to draw a buttonhole, use some round flat candies as buttons, voila, a shirt.

Then, dye another batch of fondant a different color, and either find a pic on line, or draw it, and make yourself a template, and just cut the flowers out. I wouldn't try to make them with icing or frosting, I'm just not that artistic.

I'll see if my girlfriend still has a picture of the Spongebob Cake she did. PM with your email address, and if she has it, I'll send it along.

Purchase some edible flowers or flowers at a cake decorating store (or make your own out of gummies, etc.) circle the cake as if it were a lei.

I know you did not want to go online but after taking my cake decorating classes, this is the first place I look: Wilton's Island Cake You could improvise this cake using various things like the rice crispie treats to make the tree trunk etc. I would then tie it in to scouting by putting scouts on the island with some of their trusty survival gear!

OH I LOVE THAT ONE!!!! and you could make them scouts on the island!!

I like the idea of the Hawaiian shirt, too. To make it more "Hawaiiany" you could make a pineapple upside down cake. To tie in the scouting theme, you could put a scout sash or vest and patches on the shirt. The island cake is really cute, too. Teddy Grahams (or the generic bear cookies) make decent little people with some frosting, if you wanted to populate the island with little scouts.

I like this one, too, and I don't know why this didn't occur to me until I read the instructions for it, but we have a gingerbread man cookie cutter, we could just make sugar cookie scouts and decorate them with icing. I'm glad the decision is up to DS! I'm not sure I can decide.

Maybe I should do a poll...

I can't find my good close up of the cake, but here is my daughter with her cake at her last birthday. It was a really easy cake to make. If you are interested let me know and I'll type out the details.

You can also make cool flower petals by melting jolly ranchers (or other clear hard candy) and shaping it when it is still warm.

OMG - I may have to have a Stitch party for DS now that I see this cake!!! Love it - and I just ordered the Stitch play set from disneyshopping.com so I could place those characters around the cake!

If it's not too late check out cakecentral.com. I think you might have to get a username and password. Check out the galleries that are sorted by subject. Truly awesome cakes! A friend of mine is a cake designer and she posts there. Both amateurs and professional cake decorators post on there.
