OT: Math Tutor Rates?

Looking around for a math tutor for dd (she's in 5th grade). Spoke with a retired 5th grade teacher who charges $40 per hour. Seems quite expensive to me. Does anyone have any idea what is a good range?

My son has 2 tutors. One charges 40.00 per hour and the Spanish tutor 45.00 per hour. It's ridiculous but it helps my son so it's worth it. Seems to be the going rate.

Well its been a few years back since my ds had one and they were around $20-$25 a session.
Check with the local high school they often have a list of kids that will tutor as well. The do charge but its not as much.

We have used two different tutors for high school subjects. The Spanish tutor (retired teacher) charges $60 per hour. The algebra tutor, who was hired through an educational center, charged $85 an hour. This is in NJ.

I just offered my son, who is in 11th grade to tutor a 6th grade boy in math for $10 once a week. It's only an hour and they both benefit from it.

I am a certified teacher and when I tutor, I charge $30/hour, but I also haven't upped my rate in over five years. Looks like maybe I should.

In NYC suburbs tutors get as much as $100 per hour. Rates lower than $50 are a bargain!!!!

I had a math tutor for $25 and hour but that was years ago. My brother just did a semester where he was a tutor and he made $20 an hour. He is in Texas.

I'm still a teaching student but I do substitute teach in my local school district. That being said, since I am still a student and not certified yet I charge $20.

I work in a university math department and our PhD students charge $40/hr when tutoring. When I wanted a tutor for my son several years back I asked the local high school if they could give me a list of students who might be qualified to tutor. I offered to pay around $20/hr.

At the local "Learning Center," we're paying $30 for a group session for my younger DS, or $50 for a private session. I switched to a high school teacher, who's on maternity leave for my older DS. With her, DS is getting a private session for $35, and is doing much better than in the group sessions!

we live in the midwest....IL and dd see's a tutor at her school for 7.50 per session, comes out to 19.50 a week for 3 sessions, she has had in the past a teaher from her old school who we paid 12.00 for the hour.

We pay 20/hour.My SIL tutors kids and that's what she charges. There's an e-school that tutors here and it's 125.00 for the month -M,Tu,Wed,Th for 1.5 hours each day. It's a great deal but DD has cheerleading 4 days a week. This is in south Louisiana. We're blessed.

We needed a tutor to help our 7th grader last year and I asked her math teacher (she went to a very small school last year and the math teacher taught all of the classes up to AP calc) - and he talked to his students and referred one to us. She was wonderful! I was specific with the teacher with details like - 11th or 12th grade, female (did NOT want an 11/12th boy working with my 7th grade daughter). We paid her $15/hr and that was cheap!

My stepdaughter is a senior this year and she has a gig as a math tutor for a 7th grader and she charges $20/hr. This is in Ohio. I know $20/hr may seem like a lot of money for a kid in high school - but, when you think about who your kid may be more open to learning from - a high school kid or another teacher?? If I were the kid - I'd take a highschool any day over a teacher!

The girl that tutored our 7th grader did lots of things to motivate our daughter. She decorated a notebook with lots of motivational phrases and organized all of her school work for her. We didn't ask for this, she just did it to help DD.

I'd recommend talking to your child's teacher (subject specific) and ask for recommendations. If they teach at a middle school - perhaps they know a teacher at the high school that teaches the subject you need. I'd look for more than a list of name of kids who tutor. I'd want more specifics. I suppose you could go to a local highschool, ask for a list - and ask what the school requirements are for a kid to get their name on the list to tutor. Do they just volunteer? Are they required to maintain a certain GPA for the subject, etc.

You might want to see if your kid's school or local library has a subscription to tutor.com. The school or library pays for a subscription, and then students can use it for free. I tutor for them, and I love it! All tutors have to have at least a Bachelor's degree in their subject and also have to pass several tests in the subject they tutor. We tutor English, essay writing, math, science, social studies and spanish, with several different levels in each subject. Students 4th through college freshman can utilize the service.

My mom is a math teacher in the Boston area- she's $35 a half hour.

My son had a tutor in reading over the Summer. It was $50 an hour. That seems to be the going rate around here for any type of tutor.
