I have been watching Ebay to try to buy some of these new or used for my son and there are several other brands available. They are quite a bit cheaper but... I don't want to waste money. Have any of you guys bought other "versions" of magnetix and like them just as well?

Thanks!!

PS: Sorry this is not Disney related, but I know there are lots of parents on this board.

The only ones I would by are GeoMags and Magnetix. Sometimes you can find them really cheap on Ebay but the price always goes way up by the time the auction ends. I tried this last year. I ended up just ordering from Amazon because it was easier than going back and forth between there and ebay trying to figure out which was the better deal.

If anybody knows of some great cheap place to buy them, let me know. We need to buy some more for Christmas. DS9 absolutely loves these!

I was going to say the same thing: I would only buy geomags or magnetix. I remember TRU in the store and online having a speial last year before Christmas. I don't remember it exactly, but I think it was spend $40 and get a $20 set for free. I have bought some really cheap at KBToys. Target also had them on clearance after Christmas last year. I still have a box that I bought for 50% off that I will be giving to my son this year.

the walmart in my area has had them marked down to $2 for the small set and 5 for the bigger one.

Would you be able to post a link of exactly which ones these were? That is a really good deal!

They are the magnetix. The 70 piece silver was $11 and I got a couple of the coler ones for 5. Last week they had some left for the $2 price but I was told to put them back. Friday I will check again and buy any that it left. The wife will be at work. :rotfl2:

I am not a WalMart shopper. Are these in the toy section or in a special clearance/sale section?

clearance area! The wife, when I see a good sale, she stops me. I found some mickey and minnie small doll for 59 cents at walgreens. Regular price $5.99.I did buy all of them, about 9

Against my better judgement I went to Walmart today in search of these. I found one box of magnetix lights that was on sale for $7. It only had 17 pieces and it said what kind of batteries you needed but it did not say that they were included. I didn't buy it. Hope you all have better luck than I did!

I bought some Magnetix sets on clearance at Target about 2 months ago. Then I found sets at Walmart on clearance about 2 weeks ago. I bought a 17 piece Magnetix Lights set for $5 and the smaller sets for $2 each. I'm saving them for DS9 for Christmas.

TRU had some GeoMag ones on clearance for $10 (I think) I think that they were a 70 piece set

I'm with cruisinfamily- the best are geomags and supermags- I think the others are a poor imitation. As homeschoolers, I've learned that when choosing a toy, it pays to get the best you can get- the other magnets are disappointingly weak compared to geomags. And if I had the cheaper ones, I don't think they would have gotten the uses out of them they have. My kids just adore theirs, they play with them daily! they were worth every penny, the 1st set I got off ebay, and still paid a bundle-but a couple of months ago I found 2 smaller sets at KB toys at the mall, they were having a bogo 1/2 off sale- so I got 2 small sets to add on for $10-
Geomag is plastwood brand,I believe... :flower:

Love geomag but Magnetix work pretty well too. They are not as strong, I will admit. Our Walmart doesn't have any on clearance right now. It is being totally remodeled though so that could be part of why.

Anway, my kids love to use these on these magnetic boards we have. They are about the size of a piece of regular paper and I got them at a school supply store. They are great for using them at restaurants because you have a lot less trouble with them rolling away. Just thought I'd share!

Since they were not a good deal at my Walmart I am wondering if individual Walmarts have their own markdown schedule. I know that Target does this and I was wondering if Walmart is the same way.

Yes they do. If a item doesn't do good or they have an overstock, they can clearance it out. One store in I clearance out their cuds shirts but the on in IN, had them at regular price.

My DS5 received a set of these for his birthday. As his little brother - age 3 - likes to put things in his mouth we have been very careful to keep these out of his reach. We only let DS5 play with them when we are supervising and they are kept in a special box. Well I don't know where my mind was a couple of weeks ago but - DH ran out to buy pull-ups (it was late 9:30 pm-ish) and I was getting the boys ready for bed and the little one asked me if he could "play with brother's toys?" Well since they had played together with them so nicely earlier, I got the box down and let him sit on the floor with them. As I turned my back to put something in the kitchen I heard a deep breath, a cough, then a gasp! You guessed it, he SWALLOWED one of the metal balls. I freak out! Made sure he was breathing, called my DH to "GET HOME NOW" and headed to the local ER. Well after some xrays and a not so sure Physician's assistant, they declared that he may or may not have swallowed it and we would have to "check to see if it COMES OUT" if you know what I mean! Lesson learned! I will NEVER turn my back on this child EVER again! We call him our ER boy - sprained an ankle at age 1 throwing a temper tantrum, spent New Years Day at the ER in Florida at age 1 & 1/2 instead of at Animal Kingdom - fell at the rental house and smacked the center of his forehead on the metal corner of a glass table, at age 2 split his chin open on a bike helmet while pushing a ride on toy, now this at age 3! This child is the epitamy of "a typical boy!" Just thought I would prevent someone else from having as much gray hair as me!! As a side note, my DS5 LOVES THESE!

Last year, I had these cool little sets of Geomags that you could make a compass with. My class in our co-op was studying geography and I gave one of these sets to each student. One of the moms called me a couple of days later to tell me that her son had swallowed the steel ball. He wanted to see if the magnet would work through his cheek. She was cracking up at him. He was 7 years old at the time, well beyond the age of putting things in his mouth one would think!! So, it's not just little brothers that swallow those balls!!
