For anyone who lives near Charleston, do you know of any fun, good restaurants for lunch (are are myself, DH, DS4 and DD6).

Is The Bucaneer any good?

Would love any suggestions you have on restaurants, things to see. We'll be in town for only a few hours, killing time on our way to Hilton Head Island.

Thanks in advance!

Hey, Katie -

I can't comment on the Bucanner - haven't been (I think it is pretty new). In Downtown Charleston, there are tons(!) of dining choices. There is a very popular (with tourists AND locals) restaurant called Hyman's seafood. There is a very large variety of fresh seafood prepared in just about any way one could imagine. And if there are any non-seafood eaters in your party, you can also order from his brother's restaurant which is a deli (I think you can still do this). The main problem with this place is the wait, which can be long at peak times. We usually try to go for an early lunch (11) or very early dinner (around 4:30). Hymans is very near the city market.

If you like Thai food, there is a restaurant on Upper King Street called Basil and I have always enjoyed the food there. This area is part of an upscale shopping district.

For a casual meal - soup/salad/sandwich - you can't go wrong at Five Loaves Cafe. I haven't been to the current location, but from the map, it looks to be near the Charleston Museum (a neat place to spend some time) and the Children's Museum (which your young children should enjoy).

I'd avoid -- strongly -- any of the touristy restaurants on Market Street (especially Bubba Gumps and Charleston Crab House...both are tourist traps with a capital T).

If I think of anything else, I'll come back. You can also check tripadvisor (dot com) for current reviews of area restaurants.

PS - when will you be in town?

queenmum2-so weird that we have the ssame name and both in Charleston!

The Buccaneer is pretty good. My kids loved the fish tank there and the replica pirate ships they have upstairs. I wasn't thrilled with the lobster mac and cheese, but everyone else liked their food, and my kids loved their stuff (cheesburger and something else I can't remember) My DH said the prime rib is good too. It's new, so not too much of a tourist trap yet!

I lived in Charleston awhile. We loved Hymans Seafood, Magnolias, and Sticky Fingers Also ..California Dreaming ( I miss it so much)

Hyman's is great and has been in business for a really long time. Great seafood! When in Charleston, seafood is the best!
