OT Husband Health

My husband has just been diag. back in Auguest (right after we got back from DW) with CHF, end stage renal desease, and now he has to go in for a bone marrow biopsy. We just got denyed for his SSD and are getting a lawyer for this has anyone had any trouble in getting SSD and how long did it take. I am also the poster who was not going to do Christmas this year and got a lot of response they were all great and we got a lot of ideas.

With this latest problem with the bone marrow my husband (Les) has deceided not to tell anyone in the family untill we get the results back, he goes in Wed I am hoping to know something by Friday. I would like to hear from anyone who maybe able to give me some answer on any of my question.

I got SSD for my son. It took over a year. I had to provide endless paperwork and diagnosis. I brought in letters from teachers, therapists, endless Drs. before they would finally give it to him. I literally took in hundreds of pieces of paper. Bombard them with everything medical. Any medical reports, test results, etc. Take it all in. You can appeal their decision. You should appeal. Generally, people do not bother with the appear. When being given SSD a committee grants approval for benefits. When you appeal a decision such as being denied benefits, a specific reviewer looks over all documents you have provided. Take them everything you have. All medical records, everything from your doctors. Just don't give up.

DH is in the appeals process for SSD. He was directed to a lawyer by one of his Drs. The lawyer said it is normal to be denied at least once. It's a long and frustrating process sometimes and a lot of people quit. Hang in there, document everything and keep sending all you medical info to the board. It's really helped us have a lawyer though a he has lots of experience dealing with SSD and files all the paperwork and keeps copies of DH's records so if SSD loses it, he can send it again w/o calling us or having to get new copies from the Dr.

I agree, apply again and be sure to innundate them with medical paperwork describing END STAGE RENAL DISEASE.

I'm surprised that he was denied. ESRD is usually approved automatically. My husband had ESRD and received SSDI without needing a lawyer. Now my 20 year old son has been diagnosed with ESRD and has a social worker at the hospital helping him with his application which will be for SSI. She says he won't have a problem being approved right away. I guess we'll have to hope that's the case. To the OP- when your husband finally gets his approval it will be retroactive. ---Kathy

Thank you all for your replays I have not responed because my husband has been in the hospital for a blood transfusion his Hemogloban dropped to 4.8 and they also did a scope on Sunday, we found out that his Bone Marrow is not forming (don't know what that means) if any one does please responed, we are reporting everything to his lawyer so that they have all of the info that we need. We did get him home for Chirstmas.

My dd applied for ssd in Nov.'02. She was denied and kept appealing until her death in April'06. I thought was over, but her attorney said no. the judge has asked me to get a letter from her dr tying together her application notice and cause of death. If we can do that, we will get all the back-owed money. I think the judge feels guilty for adjourning the last hearing because he felt she was depressed and wanted her evaluated. She died a month later. I hope he feels something.

Lisa~ I don't know exactly what your DH's numbers and such mean but generally, you need bone marrow to produce blood cells and the hemaglobin it a measure of the substance in the blood that helps bind oxygen to the blood cells so the oxygen can travel throughout the body. I hope the transfusion helps him.

Midge~ I'm sorry for your loss. I know it feels like too little too late and it shouldn't have happened that way. BTW, my ex-MIL lives in Monroe. I only visited twice but it seemed like a nice place.

Lisa- my son was just in the hospital for the same thing, which is how they discovered his renal failure to start with. He received 5 bags of packed cells to get his hemoglobin anywhere near normal. They were surprised he wasn't already in shock. I didn't know this either, about bone marrow function being related to the kidneys. They started my son on some injections to help his marrow production- hope this helps your husband. ---Kathy
