Hello :)

Hoping some fellow dis'ers can help me :)

My daughter has a hockey tournament in Sudbury in February. The team has booked a block of rooms at the Quality Inn. I looked at TripAdvisor and didn't find very nice reviews:eek: I am VERY picky about where I stay ... maybe too picky ;)

Anyways, I've searched for hotels and have seen the Fairfield Inn which is new and I've seen a new hotel is going to open soon (a Hampton Inn) .... anyone ever seen / been to these? I can't imagine a brand new hotel wouldn't be clean :)

I figured if anyone knew something it would be "someone" on here!!!

Thank you :)

Kerri

I spent 7 weeks staying at the Sudbury Quality Inn during Oct/Nov 2005.
I don't know what reviews you've read but it was a very nice hotel.
A decent restaurant. Friendly staff. Clean rooms.
It is a very popular hotel with the tournament crowd. Every week there was another group of hockey players checking in.

Quality Inn is ranked 6/17. I am usually fairly comfortable w/ most Trip advisor ratings overall.

Personally from our experience of the #1 and #2 listed on that link, the Fairfield IS nice. I wouldn't stay at the Ambassador, it's not what it looks like from the pictures online.

When we were married in Sudbury we had out of town guests stay at the Travelway (ranked #4) hotel across the street from Science North. It was fine.

I would imagine for your tournament they are booking you into something fairly close to the arena for ease of transport.

There are a couple of brand new hotels such as a Hilton Garden Inn going in right as you come into town (from the south, i.e., GTA) however they would be a bit of a drive to the arena. I'm not good at google earth but you can see the entire area and get an idea that way.

HTH!!!

While in Sudbury you might want to nosh at the following.

Deluxe Drive-In 17
1313 Lorne Street
Sudbury, ON,P3C5M9
705-673-5295

One of the best things about Sudbury.
I ate there back in October of '91.

Sorry no picture of Deluxe. The only one I could find is smaller than an avatar so I didn't post it.

Best advice about accommodations is posting here at the disboards. Lots of folks will chime in.

As previously posted Ambassador not on my list of preferred lodgings in the Sudbury area.

Somehow Ham Ham :worship: has his secret resources all around the world that tell you the best place to eat!! It's kinda scary.:scared1:

Even though I gave up meat I still have to go to Deluxe for the unbelievable fries. And when I was still eating meat, the steak on a bun was killer good.:woohoo:
(I so need to get a Deluxe t shirt. :rotfl2: )

There are 2 Deluxe locations but the one you will probably drive right by is on Regent across the street from the Mcdonalds.

I actually lived in Sudbury for three years while going to university, so I do know the Deluxe!!! They have good foot longs too :goodvibes Will have to take my girls.

I too read the reviews on Trip Advisor and I also believe they are fairly accurate. I also am not entirely thrilled with the downtown Sudbury area, unless it has improved remarkably since I lived there (92-96). Don't get me wrong, I loved Sudbury ... just not the downtown area :) I also know I won't stay at the Ambassador ... LOL!!

I don't know if we have to stay with the team ... my dd is only 7yrs old, so I dont' see it as a big deal at her age. I'd rather us be somewhere without a gazillion girls running around, although other teams will likely be at other hotels. Plus where the Fairfield is there are more restaurants to choose from (East Sides, The Keg, Kelseys, etc).

As for the Hilton Garden, I will check that out too. It isn't far from the entrance to Sudbury to scoot down to the arena ... there is a Hampton Inn going in by the Hilton then too as that is that area ... or maybe one is almost ready and one is soon to be built?? I don't know :)

Thanks so much for the suggestions ... any other opinions are appreciated too :)

I lived in Sudbury for a bit too. (SSR from 1989 - 1994). Anyway, I hear the Quality Inn has gone downhill again. The team is prob. staying there because of the pool. There are not many in Sudbury with a pool. The Travelodge has one and there is still a restaurant attached. I would stay there. What arenas is the tournament out of? Is it in Sudbury proper, or the valley, or nickel centre. Makes a bit of a difference cause it is all so spread out.

As far as the Quality Inn goes, I live an hour and a half from Sudbury, and have stayed at the motel a few times, while my hubby works on Saturdays! If you are looking for a cleaner more moderen place, this isn't it. Unless you get one of there few, and I mean few, updated rooms, they are not great. The pool also is small, and always cold. It is not in a great area of Sudbury, unless you like seeing the soup kitchen, and hookers at night!
I have also stayed at the Fairfield and it is a nice place. The rooms smell new, they smell clean, but again it is not old at all, so still has the "newness" factoe. As far as the other one, I know one was being built, I don't know if it was ever finished.
Place to eat with kids on weekend, would be Buzzy Browns, wonderful food, and kids eat free on weekends. Can't beat it. It also has a different kids menu, with cappaletti being one. It is in the South End though! Good place. Good luck!

Hi Kerri,
Just got back from a visit to the Big Nickel, lol. The Hampton Inn and Homewood Suites are done (the ones just as you come into town) and I forgot to say that we also stayed at the Travelodge once, it was nice and has a Perkins attached. And ifyou get a chance, your daughter might like Rucker's.

Happy Thanksgiving!!
xoxo
