We were at MIL's having Christmas Dinner and all the "hens" were in the dining room cleaning up and DD ventured off in there and she fell and hit face first on a huge porcelian crock type thing!!! After fighting through the "hens" to get to my child finally her mouth was filled will blood and she is snaggled tooth. I about passed out. I can't tell if they are loose because she won't let me stick my finger in her mouth, but the teeth look bad and they are very sharp and she keeps cutting her tounge with them. She has tried to eat several times and she can't bite down she screams her head off. So I have been giving her softer things to eat so she doesn't starve.

UGHHHHHHHH why does this have to happen to my baby. Of course the older of the "hens" were telling me that her teeth are going to turn black and basically scaring the heck out of me. I mean she won't lose her teeth for at least another 4 years or so. I can't let her walk around with black teeth.

I am gonna call the ped. dentist first thing in the morning. Has this happened to anyone elses child and what did they do to fix it?

TIA!!!

When one of my twin DD's was 2, she actually fell & lost a front tooth. I took her to our pediatric dentis & they made a "false tooth: for her. It attached to a wire that went around the back of her other teeth & then they "cemented" bands to her 2 back molars.

I know she could have lived without the tooth, but I knew she wasn't going to start losing teeth for a few years. I wanted to get it taken care of, just as you do. I completely understand where you're coming from.

Definitely get her into the dentist. If nothing else, they will probably check to see if nerves are exposed. They may be able to cap them also.

Good luck.

My DD did this to one of her front teeth and it wasnt a very big chip but it was still sharp enough it was cutting her tongue..he just sanded ( not sure what the real term for it is..lol) it down basically , her tooth is a little smaller than the other one but its not noticable.

Sorry to hear about your DD.

If she's cutting her tongue I'd call the dentist tonight and ask him if he can see her now. Chances are he will, or he'll find someone who will. This qualifies as a dental emergency, especially if she's in pain.

I agree. If they are loose, the dentist will figure that out and do what might be necessary to save them. The dentist can also take measures so your child stops biting her tongue.

When my DS was 3, he was wrestling with my DH. DH turned his head, DS ran smack into the back of his head, knocking the two front top teeth up into the top of his mouth. We immediately called the dentist, by the time we got there, DS was in shock. The dentist was amazing the way he handled the situation and calmed all of us down. Xrayed showed that the teeth didn't break, just were pushed out of place, so he put them back in where they belonged. Two weeks of soft, cut up food and DS was fine.

Our other DS smiled at me one day, and I noticed his front tooth was dark. Again, we immediately ran off to the dentist. There was nothing they could do for it, thinking that maybe it would change back to it's original color. It never did. Now, at age 5, he's about ready to loose that tooth as it has died off, yet remained in place. We have no idea when he injured the tooth, but beinging it's darker, we know he did at some time. It's not black, just darker than the rest of his teeth.

I would call the dentist tonight. Best of luck to all of you. :wizard:

I agree with this poster. She may be in pain - and - she may cut her tongue with her tooth and make things worse. I'd probably call the closest hospital emergency room and ask them if you should taker her in to the ER or if they can notify the on-call dentist and have them contact you.

My daughter was 15 months and her front 2 teeth hadn't formed right and we was waiting on them to grow alittle more but she fell at my sister's and made an abcess on her gum above one so they put her to sleep and done a root canal and put 2 baby crowns on her front teeth. They look just like normal teeth. The downside is they are not like adult crowns and are not as strong. She can not bite into an apple or on hard candy with her teeth but she is now 3 and knows to chew with her back teeth. One does fall off occassionally but we just go to the dentist and she puts it back on (she does not have to be put to sleep for this). But I would call the dentist asap as she could hurt herself.

Definately call the dentist tonight, preferrably a peds one. You may also want to check with the pediatrician or a ER at a children's hospital. There may be things that need to be done sooner than later. Also this could be very uncomfortable for her and you do not want her to have to be in pain. There are other pain meds that can be given safely to toddlers if she needs more than tylenol and ibuprofen. Good luck, I am sorry. I have been a peds nurse and this is not uncommon ( am currently working in Labor and Delivery).

My DS fell down a flight of steps at the age of 18 months. He chipped the top 4 front teeth. I took him to the dentist, who referred me to a oral surgeon. The teeth had to be removed. My brother had lost his teeth early and had developed a speech impediment. I was really afraid of him saying his j's and ch's wrong.

He spoke just fine and at the age of 7 finally got front teeth again. Everyone still says how much they like his front teeth! Call a dentist and realize that even if she loses the teeth, they will grow back.

My son chipped his tooth early on, shortly after his front teeth came in. His tooth had a chip that looked like an upside down V in it. It didn't cut his mouth or anything but it looked pretty bad. When he was around 2, I took him to the Ped. Dentist who capped it. He had to use a laughing gas as I recall, but the tooth looks great, you cant tell it was chipped at all.

My DS (3) fell and hit has mouth on a marble window sill at a dr's office this summer (the sill was about 2 inches off the ground - another story for another time.) Anyway, he had to have one of his front teeth removed. It had been dislodged from its socket and there was no way it could stay in. It will be several years before the new one will come in.

Definately call your dentist ASAP. I'm not sure what they will do with a broken tooth. They might be able to file it. It will only turn black if the nerve has been damaged/severed.

Hope everything goes well!

When our son was 5, he hit his tooth on a child's head at school. His tooth turned black at the base and I assumed it was dead. Took him to the dentist and he told me it was bruised and that it would probably turn white again. It did! I always thought once it was black it was dead. Guess teeth can be bruised. Good luck & keep us posted! Keeping you in our prayers.

I was a dental assistant in my former life. If she is not in pain there is probably nothing a dentist would do tonight. If the teeth are very sharp, and she will let you, you can use a regular emory board to smooth them off. If all depends how far they are fractured, what will be done. I have seen this more times than I can count, so, I understand how freaked out you are, I would be too!! It is too long of a time before she will lose those teeth, so, they will do something to fix or replace them.(you need to keep the space open for the permanent teeth) Keep us posted what happens.

Thanks for all of your advice. The ped will see her in the AM. I guess they did not feel a need to see her tonight. I did give her a dose of tylenol before I put her to bed, and I am sure I will be up most of the night. She was being a little fussy but she is sleeping good right now.

For those of you that they capped your childs tooth was it a white cap or a silver cap? I DO NOT want silver caps on her front teeth at all. I went to school with the ped. dentist and I know the family pretty well so I feel certain he will do what I want him to do. If not I will take her somewhere else. With all the things they can do with teeth today surely they can fix it.

I know I am making a bigger deal out of it than I should but had it been any other child than my own I would say oh it will be fine and go about my business, but I cannot handle it when my babies are hurt...IT KILLS ME!!!!

I guess I have finally realized what it feels like to be a mom!!!! I would have rather it happen to me as to have my baby be in any pain at all!!!

Thanks again for all your help..I feel much better now!!!

Don't fear they will use tooth colored enamel for the front teeth. My youngest daughter got a cavity in her front tooth and they have capped it and it is the regular tooth color. All they have used to do her tooth several times is to give her a valium 45 mins before her appt time. But beware the cap can fall off and it will have to be put back on. This has happened a caouple of times and the Dr has put it back on. I will be so glad when this tooth falls out. Hope that helps you feel better.

I don't think you're making too big a deal about it, it is a big deal when something hurts your child, it's the way every mother feels

Good luck at the dentist tomorrow

It will be ok...get some sleep and let us know how it turns out tomorrow! My 1 year old chipped her brand new tooth the week after it came in...she tripped (was tripped by her older sister) and fell on her face. I could have died! Remember: It's fixable!
