Did anyone catch Dr. Oz on Oprah about obese kids? He (or the other guy) posed the question, "Which is better, regular bacon or turkey bacon?" to be answered after the commercial. I would guess turkey bacon, but there were lots of surprises on that show! I missed the answer because my friend came to pick up her children....did anyone catch it? I just looked on Oprah.com and did the quiz for "Eat this, not that" and didn't find it. Just curious....

Thanks!

I think he said they both has the same amount of calories, but the turkey bacon had more sodium. So the regular bacon was better.

Sorta OT..... I just ordered the 3 pack of the "Eat This Not That" books. I saw the new one at Walmart and was going to get it from our library, but Amazon had the 3 pack on sale. I really want to read the one for kids. It's supposed to have the 20 WORST kid's meals in America.

Does anyone have these books? I'm trying to lose by making better choices and thought these might help.

That was correct.

The show was full of shocks, I thought! A raost beef from Arby's with cheese on it was a better choice than their turkey sandwich. What?! Wow! It was because of the high calorie honey bread, I believe. I bet those books are interesting!

Yes, but it wasn't Dr. Oz stating it.

It was the other guy who has the book out, "Eat This, Not That".

I have the "eat this not that for kids" and i love it. It is so easy to follow and has pictures and real easy descriptions. I have used it and taken it to the grocery store as well. It was quite a wake up call as I was feeding my family stuff from the "not that" category!

I am going to pick up the one for eat this not that-supermarket version this week.

I have the eat this not that supermarket edition. It really is eye opening. For the most part we've always done well but even some of the things we thought we did well could be made better. We keep can chili(nasty I know) on hand to be bad with turkey chili dogs. Anyways, we bought turkey can chili thinking it was better but the veggie chili is even better.

I really loved the juice segment and the cereal segment.

It also goes over the worst frozen foods and meals for you. I was really suprised what the worst is.

I found it really simple to read and they related the bad stuff in thoughts of eating slices of bacon or number of snickers bars.

I was waiting for Dr. Oz to confirm or deny this, and he didn't. I have been feeding my family turkey bacon for years, and thought I was doing the right thing for them.

You know what I got out of this show? Don't eat convenience foods. If you prepare and cook it yourself, it is likely to be healthier for your family.
:)

I buy low sodium regular bacon. Doesn't turkey bacon come in low sodium? If the sodium levels and calories were the same, I wonder then which would be better.

I don't think a thread can be OT on the Community Board. :confused3 Just a discussion within a thread.

Thanks for all the responses - got my answer and more!

Thanks, but actually it was moved here....oops! I'm relatively new to the boards and have never scrolled down this far and didn't know I was missing such a great board!! So I posted it elsewhere with the OT disclaimer - I've seen others do it so I figured it might fly. But now I've happily discovered the Community Boards and can spend even more time reading instead of doing other things I should!!!:thumbsup2

Seems like the turkey bacon would be better if it was low sodiom. ?? I like both but love real bacon. Actually if I only eat one or two slices of real bacon, it satifies me more than the turkey.
And you were right, it wasn't Oz. That didn't even register with me.

That is because Dr. Oz would have said don't eat either of them. He is a cardiac surgeon.:lmao:

I saw the eat this not that book for kids at stop and shop one day, they didn't have the others, does walmart have them?
I didn't buy it, but we looked at it, and I think I will get it.

Speaking of good nutrition books for kids.
have you ever seen the Dr. Fuhrman Disease Proof your CHild book?? truly eye opening.
he also has a book eat to live, that is eye opening as well.
both good reads, a bit on the extreme side, but can certainly be modified.

Real bacon is real bacon. It's not another meat that has additives to make it taste like bacon.
Butter is healthier than margarine for the same reason.
Any artificial food is that-artificial.

I love how Dr Oz says if you eat margarine instead of butter, you may as well spread it on your butt, because that's where it is going since your body doesn't know how to process it.:lmao:

It's also the same with high fructose corn syrup vs cane sugar. The body doesn't know how to process HFCS, so pour the syrup on your butt. Research is showing that the US obesity problem started about the time food companies switched from sugar to HFCS.

I love those books :thumbsup2 It all makes sense though, you just really need to read the labels not just the front of the packaging.

And I totally agree about margarine and HFCS :crazy2:
