OT: Does the FAA consider these items "liquid"?

I haven't flown since the new liquid ban went into effect. Not sure about the following items...

solid deodorant

lip balm (i.e. Chapstick)

Mascara

Toothpaste.

Anyone out there have any good answers? We plan on buying shampoo, conditioner, sunscreen, and face moisturizer when we get there, but I'd like to bring at least a few things along!

Solid deodorant is not a liquid (but roll-ons and aerosols are subject to the three ounce limit). Lip balm like Chapstick is not a liquid, but lip gels like Blistex or the Vaseline tubes must be under 3 oz. and in a quart ziploc. Mascara and toothpaste are both subject to the liquids restrictions (under 3 oz. container size and placed in a quart ziploc bag).

It isn't that the rules have changed, it is that all TSA agents interpret them differently. I put my chapstick in my ziploc, along with a hand cream, Purell, and my Tide to go Pen (never leave home without it). I double ziploc all of my other liquids in my checked bag.

We flew last September right after the new regulations went into effect, and I asked if I needed to put my Chapstick (the stick kind) in the quart bag or leave it in my purse. The screener said I could leave it in my purse. I probably would have put it in the bag if I had thought of it in advance, but I didn't think of it until we were in line, so I asked. It is probably safer to put it in the bag anyway, just in case. It doesn't take up much space, and then you don't have to worry about interpreatations.

We flew again in April and I left it in the carryon (not in the ziploc bag). It went through with no trouble, but I didn't ask anyone this time.

Solid deodorant was being confiscated within the last couple of weeks at both JFK airport in NYC and Nashville International (I saw it happen during my vacation). Toothpaste, mascara, and Tide to Go had to be in the quart bag. Not sure about the "official" line regarding chapstick, but I carried mine in my purse with no issues.

I have had my chapstick confiscated twice, both times at Orlando. I tried to discuss it with the TSA, and they said that I was trying to tell them how to interpret their rules.. So now I always put it in my ziplock. It's the only thing in there. I did forget to put it in the ziplock on a trip to chicago midway from St. Louis and they did not say a thing.

I was told that if it wasn't solid, it would be considered a liquid. I've learned to carry everything in my luggage!

I didn't get the memo that everything has to be in the original container. I got pulled aside but the man let me go...this time This was at the Philly airport last weekend. I had no issues with my chapstick not being in the plastic bag.

I've been through Philly several times last year - half the TSA employees there can't read anyway. They wouldn't know Prell with T-2-5 from Kiwi(shinola). You must have gone through the Mensa section.

what do you guys do about sunscreen? We have an early flight (getting to Old Key West around 10:30am) and would love to hang out by the pool for a while. However, we are doing the magical express and wont get our checked bags until much later in the afternoon- what do you all do in this situation?

At Wal Mart they have small clip on style bottles of various Coppertone products. I saw them just the other day. I still have mine from last year, I just refill mine when it gets close to being empty. I like them b/c they have one of those metal clips and clip well to the outside of the backpack. Anyway, they hold about 2 oz. Maybe grab one or two of them for arrival day. Just a thought....

Oh no! I wondered about this. I have already put sunscreen & body wash into clear containers & just wrote on the outside what it was. So....I'm not going to be able to do that now? I looked at buying a small container of sunscreen, but they were all over $6 for the little bottles.

The items must be in containers that are marked with the ounces. I just refill empty small bottles with new product. Shampoo in an old shampoo bottle, body wash in an emplty body wash. I also have one of the small clip on sunscreens.

Wow..... this whole thing is confusing and aggravating. I suppose to avoid problems I will bring the absolute bare minimum and buy the rest on arrival. But I can't live without Chapstick! Guess it will go into a Ziploc (this regulation was a BOON for the Ziploc company I would guess!). Well, I'm off to check the link that someone provided to see if my tuna lunch kit is considered liquid!! Thanks to you all for the help.................P

Many sunscreens come in a wipe version, like Shout wipes or moist towelettes. We bought some of those for our first day, and then used the bottle of sunscreen we'd packed in our luggage for the rest of the trip.

Okay... there is one item I am considering bringing but it doesn't appear on the list. I bought some of those "tuna kits" that include the mayo packet and the crackers. (Starkist tuna in water with 6 crackers, mayo, relish). Since the tuna is in water, is that a problem? Since it is a metal can, is that a problem? Or will I be all set if I put them (two of them) into the Ziploc bags with my Chapstick??

They weren't too expensive, so I'm not overly concerned it they confiscate them...... just don't want the aggravation. Thanks in advance for any insight into this..................P
