What doesn't seem reasonable to me is that you can't save up vacation days (or sick days either, my school let you have a maximum of 10 sick days on the book at any given time) for things like maternity leave.
I think most companies don't allow you to save up your vacation/sick time. You get 10 vacation days a year. If you don't use it, you lose it. You get 5 sick days a year. If you don't use it, you lose it. The longer you've worked for a company, the more days you get. For example, after 10 years, you get 15 vacation days a year. But you still don't get to carry over. I have seen companies that will allow a small buildup of sick time, but never vacation time.
I'm hoping to start the process of adoptiong #2 soon -- and will be in the same boat.
Wouldn't FMLA cover adoptions? I was thinking it would, but maybe not. It might be worth checking into. Of course, FMLA doesn't mean you get paid time off, just time off.
