Poor dd11 washes her hair every other night. We use neutrogena shampoo mostly but jeesh, she has the worst dandruff. We have tried conditioners and they don't help.

Any advice for what kind of shampoo may help. I know they aren't supposed to use head and shoulders at such a young age so I'm at a loss.

TIA,

Kim

DD uses Head and Shoulders and it works great! Her hair is beautiful!

Good luck!

I guess I could be ignorant , but we used head and shoulders when my DD had similar issues around that age. We used the "premium" head and shoulders stuff and it really worked great. I also suspected my DD was not rinsing all of the product off of her scalp effectively. She had long hair and just kind of gave it a cursory once over. A couple of times I came in a discreetly scrubbed and rinsed well with the shower sprayer to make sure the job was thorough. This made a big difference in getting rid of her problem.

Good Luck!

A good alternative to Head and Shoulders is Apple Cider Vinegar. After washing your DD hair, place a 50/50 mixture of vinegar to water. Rub in generously. Let it sit for at least 5 minutes, but more like 15. If she has scratched open her scalp it may burn a little, but really not bad at all. Rinse well. (her hair WILL NOT smell like vinegar). If she uses condition, have her use only 1/2 of what she normally uses to guide her as the vinegar will condition the hair also. Good Luck.

My oldest dd had the same problem and for the most part still does. Our pedi recommended T-Gel shampoo, worked great

I've had dandruff for a little bit living in the dry Colorado air. Head and Shoulders works wonders! Doesn't leave my hair greasy either. Its a bonus that its is relatively cheap and lasts awhile.

My sister had the same problem as a kid and our pediatrician told my mom to have her use Sebulex, but that was 15 years ago so I don't know if there is anything better now. What really cleared it up was the tar from our elementary school's roof. The school was redoing the roof and was unaware of all the leaks in the roof, so tar would leak down into the classrooms. My sister's desk happened to be right under one of the leaks and the tar actually cleared up the problem.

Why aren't kids supposed to use Head and Shoulders? My DS12 had some dandruff, which has cleared up since he's been using it.

OP here. I thought I had read online that the chemicles were too strong for young people :confused3. If stated by members of the dis that they used it for their kids , I would prefer to believe that over the internet so maybe I'll try the head and shoulders and see if that works. The dry skin coming off her head is almost pea size dry flakes. Its really getting bad especially with the winter. I will try it . As usual thanks to all the dis parents :worship:.

You could also do a mixture of tea tree oil and water, spritz it into her hair and have her massage it in, she can do this every other day when she's not washing her hair. The tea tree oil will absorb into her scalp and should not cause oilyness but it will help with the dandruff.

My sister had this problem when we were kids and the dermatologist prescribed a shampoo. I learned from anatomy class that the sebaceous oil glands can cause this problem.

My DD13 had used Head and Shoulders for two years now and never had a problem. She also has sensitive skin and it's not been affected by this product.

Good luck!

Head and Shoulders works great.

And maybe washing her hair more often would help - instead of every other day?

I do not think any dandruff shampoo is supposed to be used daily... I believe you are meant to trade off with regular ones which is probably what the PP meant. Just guessing here.

Selsun Blue seems to work great for my DH. I don't know for sure but it may be a little stonger than the H&S cause it REALLY reeks like tar  which I assume is why it works so well. I've gotten heat rashes on my head during the summer (tons of hair!) and using the selsun just once or twice cleared that up quickly as well.

My 13 year old has a bad dandruff problem....and I bought her a tea tree oil from Paul Mitchell that my hairdresser reccomended...and it has helped decrease the dandruff a lot.

And about Head and Shoulders, the pediatrician told me to use TGel shampoo for cradle cap, so I would imagine that perhaps the regular dandruff shampoos are safe.

We use the Head & Shoulders Intensive Treatment shampoo. It's a different active ingredient than the regular H&S shampoos. That's the only one that seems to make any difference for DH and DD.

My DD is almost 11 and has been using it for at least a year. We all wash our hair every other day occasionally using a regular shampoo, but usually using the H&S. DD and I both have very sensitive skin and have not had any reactions to the H&S.

DH used to use a tea tree shampoo before we found this H&S one he likes. That also worked well.

I bought tea tree oil for DH as a "home remedy" for poison ivy. Boy, it has a strong (bad) odor! We took a whiff and closed it back up fast. I'm sure the Paul Mitchell stuff would have a better fragrance...

If anybody wants an almost full bottle of tea tree oil...come and get it!

PS. it did not help the poison ivy rash

My girls have used Head and Shoulders on and off for years with no issue. I don't buy it for them all the time because it's too freaking expensive, so they switch on and off and their dandruff is under control.

n my experience, many girls in that age range have trouble getting their hair rinsed out properly and what appears to be dandruff may actually be a buildup of hair product. I was a Girl Guide Leader and we had a hair specialist come out once and talk to the grils about taking care of themselves. She said she sees this problem all the time. Parents bring their kids to her thinking they have a dandruff problem and that is not it all all. Just my two cents worth.:)

This is true.

When my DD started showering, she had some major issues. Sometimes her hair would be greasy and a few times upon close inspection she had a yellowish build-up on her scalp. :crazy2:

I had to get into the shower with her and help her wash her hair and get it fully rinsed. We both have extremely thick hair. You have to actually separate it into sections and work your fingers all over the scalp to get it wet. If you just stand under the shower the water just runs off the top. Apparently, she thought that was good enough.

Her scalp still does seem dry at times, so she usually uses the H&S Intensive treatment. About once a week or so she uses a Neutrogena Anti-Residue shampoo to ensure that she doesn't get any yucky build-up again.
