Ot: Dd11 dandruff

This is true.

When my DD started showering, she had some major issues. Sometimes her hair would be greasy and a few times upon close inspection she had a yellowish build-up on her scalp. :crazy2:

I had to get into the shower with her and help her wash her hair and get it fully rinsed. We both have extremely thick hair. You have to actually separate it into sections and work your fingers all over the scalp to get it wet. If you just stand under the shower the water just runs off the top. Apparently, she thought that was good enough.

Her scalp still does seem dry at times, so she usually uses the H&S Intensive treatment. About once a week or so she uses a Neutrogena Anti-Residue shampoo to ensure that she doesn't get any yucky build-up again.

I know dd was having the rinsing problem also. At first I thought that was the flaking issue. I had made her get back into the shower a few times to re-rinse but she still seems to have the problem.

I think I'm going to try the H & S Intensive treatment once per week and then use the neutrogena for the product build up (she flat irons her hair)

Boy this girls hair is expensive lol.

thanks again for all the help.

While on the pre teen subject, what are the tweens using for skin care? :rolleyes1 She uses the strydex pads twice daily but is still having slight problem.

I bought tea tree oil for DH as a "home remedy" for poison ivy. Boy, it has a strong (bad) odor! We took a whiff and closed it back up fast. I'm sure the Paul Mitchell stuff would have a better fragrance...

If anybody wants an almost full bottle of tea tree oil...come and get it!

PS. it did not help the poison ivy rash

I would LOVE your tea tree oil! I use it for everything, from dry scalp to dry skin, to putting it on cuts or scrapes (helps heal them so fast!) or burns, to using it before I give myself (or anyone else) a Henna tattoo. I love Henna, give them to myself a lot over the summer months and the tea tree oil opens your pores so well, which helps the Hanna penetrate deeper, get darker and last longer. :) Yes it does have a strong smell but it disappates pretty quickly. And if you happen to mix it with something (like water) the smell is diluted even more. I have a lot of uses for tea tree oil actually.

DD13 has some Avon Clear Skin stuff but it doesn't work so well on her so I also got her a Zap IT! kit from Melalueca, that seems to work better for her. She's got my oily skin so the least I can do is help her with face care kits. :)

i'm really not sure if it's dandruff or my daughter's laziness about washing all the shampoo & conditioner out of her hair, but her hair is LOADED with dandruff. the only time it gets clean is if DH or i wash it for her, which is embarrassing when you're 12. i'm hoping she'll get better at it as she gets older. she alternates t-gel and selsun blue. head & shoulders doesn't work for her at all.

My son has had this problem since birth... cradle cap has progressed to now and he's 10.

Things that work - Nioxin & Paul Mitchell Tea Tree shampoo - the best and TGel did well but not as good. He also has a very light hand with a conditioner and must rinse very well.

Hope this helps :)

My son had a terrible dandruff problem and Head and Shoulders wasn't helping. We tried the Walmart brand of medicated shampoo...it was right next to the Selsun Blue shampoo. We were going to try the Selsun Blue but decided to try the Walmart brand because it was cheaper. We are really pleased with how well it works!!!

I started using Head and Shoulders when I was 13. I'm almost 17 now and I haven't had to use it in about 6 months. It's all cleared up, and I use just use aussie.

For skin care, has been more of a problem. I've used clean and clear, proactive, and the other brands. So far they will work for about a week and then stop. I'm using this murad kit 2 times a day, hopefully that will start clearing it up.

Good luck!

My DD has had this problem since she was about 9 as well. It started mostly when she started showering herself, and I know she wasn't rinsing as well as she needed! We went back to me bathing her in my big tub (I have a sprayer so I rinse really well).

I also found great success with T-Sal shampoo! The salicylic acid really helped exfoliate her scalp. It took a few weeks, plus I used diluted vinegar for a final rinse (makes the hair nice and shiny!). It really really worked! Now we just use regular shampoo, since we got it under control. She has long-ish thick hair, and is also close to puberty, which makes it oily. I have to shampoo twice and then condition just the ends, every single day... UGH...

Walgreens has their own version of T-Sal, which is larger bottle for half the price. Yippee.

I would really give that a try! Good luck!

Are you sure it's just dandruff? I have psoriasis on my scalp- which is very itchy. I use the neutrogena tar shampoo which I believe is safe for kids. Good luck.

My DS12 (with the dandruff) starting using Clearasil ultra facial soap once a day (dispenses from a tube not a bar) and it has helped keep him clear. My DD15 is a completely different story, she uses prescription products to try to keep her acne under control.

My boys have the same problem, according to their hairdresser it's a combination of dry skin (cradle cap) and not rinsing well enough. I definitely would not have her wash it more than every other day, too much is actually drying. My boys use Head and Shoulders especially during the winter and follow with conditioner.

A couple other things that may help are making sure your house has enough moisture in the air and if I notice that their skin is really dry and itching sometimes I give them Zyrtec and that helps with the dry, itchiness and this also helps their scalps.

In certain areas I get horrible dandruff or dry scalp due to the environment.

I have tried all sorts of home remedies and none of it worked.

The best shampoo I used was one from Avon, it's a dandruff shampoo, smells wonderful, does not smell medicated or strong like head and shoulders or Selson blue.

It doesn't dry out your hair, keeps it shiny and soft while removing the dandruff and relieving the itchy feeling without that icy hot feeling that some of them give...
It's called Advance Techniques 2-in-1 Anti Dandruff Shampoo & Conditioner, sold by Avon online, it's only $3 right now.
Hope it helps and she gets relief soon...

They sell a mint shampoo that helps at Bath and Body Works. I also have found DD a good shampoo at Whole Foods. The chemicals in the traditional dandruff shampoos scare me except for the TGel.

My DD is 9 and uses the Head and Shoulders intensive treatment a couple of times a week. Like a previous poster mentioned, she has had a flaky scalp since she was a baby (cradle cap). I had a couple of pediatricians suggest Head and Shoulders to me as early as when she was a toddler. :confused3 I was still helping her wash her hair at this point though, and am/was bad about getting water/shampoo in her face when rinsing!
So she hasn't used the H&S shampoo until this year, but it seems to be working great! (I did use the Neutrogena T-gel shampoo on her a few times when she was younger and the dandruff seemed REALLY bad). We have tried the Paul Mitchell Tea Tree shampoo also, but it didn't seem to work so great for us, and it is so expensive! Good luck to your DD! :)

Not all dandruff is created equal. Different fols respond to different things.(My derm. told me that)Keep trying new things and something will eventually work. I have very thick hair and still have the washing out the shampoo problem at times(when I'm in a hurry). I also have a regular dandruff problem though. I've tried everything, including prescriptions. Most recently, I've started using the Fekkai glossing shampoo/conditioner. It is not made for dandruff. I got a free sample and tried it. I'm hooked. I don't know if it is the olive oil in it or that it is lighter than most products, but my hair and scalp have NEVER been this good. The only thing that came close was usin Proactiv's antidandruff products. Too bad Fekkai is so expensive:eek:

OT but I looove the smell of that line and so wanted to love the shampoo and conditioner (despite the price), but I found the shampoo very drying. I do use the glossy styling balm though.

For both dandruff in scalp and eczema on hands/wrists, etc--we've had good luck by adding more olive oil in your diet.

Since, I started using olive oil in cooking & adding to foods, my mild eczema has not recurred in years (!).

Also, make sure you're drinking enough water & eating lots of fruits/vegs.

When DS's dandruff flares up, usually a sign he's not drinking enough water in our dry air in Michigan winter.
